Abstract: In this paper the Dean (1928) equations are extended to the case of a helical pipe flow, and it is shown that they depend not only on the Dean number K but also on a new parameter λ/[Rscr ] where λ is the ratio of the torsion τ to the curvature κ of the pipe axis and [Rscr ] the Reynolds number referred in the usual way to the pipe radius a and to the equivalent maximum speed in a straight pipe under the same axial pressure gradient. The fact that the torsion has no first-order effect on the flow is confirmed, but it is shown that this is peculiar to a circular cross-section. In the case of an elliptical cross-section there is a first-order effect of the torsion on the secondary flow, and in the limit λ/[Rscr ] → ∞ (twisted pipes, provided only with torsion), the first-order ‘displacement’ effect of the walls on the secondary flow, analysed in detail by Choi (1988), is recovered.Different systems of coordinates and different orders of approximations have recently been adopted in the study of the flow in a helical pipe. Thus comparisons between the equations and the results presented in different reports are in some cases difficult and uneasy. In this paper the extended Dean equations for a helical pipe flow recently derived by Kao (1987) are converted to a simpler form by introducing an appropriate modified stream function, and their equivalence with the present set of equations is recovered. Finally, the first-order equivalence of this set of equations with the equations obtained by Murata et al. (1981) is discussed.

Abstract: To significantly improve the frequency references used in radio-astronomy and the precision measurements in atomic physics, we provide frequency dissemination through a 642-km coherent optical fiber link. On the frequency transfer, we obtained a frequency instability of $$3\times 10^{-19}$$ at 1,000 s in terms of Allan deviation on a 5-mHz measurement bandwidth, and an accuracy of $$5\times 10^{-19}$$ . The ultimate link performance has been evaluated by doubling the link to 1,284 km, demonstrating a new characterization technique based on the double round trip on a single fiber. This method is an alternative to previously demonstrated techniques for link characterization. In particular, the use of a single fiber may be beneficial to long hauls realizations in view of a continental fiber network for frequency and time metrology, as it avoids the doubling of the amplifiers, with a subsequent reduction in costs and maintenance. A detailed analysis of the results is presented, regarding the phase noise, the cycle-slips detection and removal and the instability evaluation. The observed noise power spectrum is seldom found in the literature; hence, the expression of the Allan deviation is theoretically derived and the results confirm the expectations.

Abstract: In this paper, we establish and analyze a traffic flow model which describes the formation and dynamics of traffic jams. It consists of a pressureless gas dynamics system under a maximal constraint on the density and is derived through a singular limit of the Aw-Rascle model. From this analysis, we deduce the particular dynamical behavior of clusters (or traffic jams), defined as intervals where the density limit is reached. An existence result for a generic class of initial data is proved by means of an approximation of the solution by a sequence of clusters. Finally, numerical simulations are produced.

Abstract: The objectives of this work were to determine optimal surface electromyogram (EMG) electrode locations, and inter-electrode distance (IED), when assessing activity and fatigue in the human upper trapezius muscle. Surface EMG signals were recorded from the upper trapezius muscle of 11 healthy male subjects using a linear array of 16 surface electrodes. Five arm positions were investigated (arms at the side of the body, 45° and 90° flexion, 45° and 90° abduction). Fatiguing (1 kg hand load held for 3 min) and non-fatiguing (no load, 0.5 kg and 1 kg hand load held for 3 s) contractions were made. The variabilities of the average rectified value, root mean square, mean and median power spectral frequency and slope over time of these parameters as functions of electrode location and IED (from 5 mm over a range of 35 mm in steps of 5 mm) were quantitatively evaluated. A criterion for selecting the optimal electrode position was applied. This criterion indicated an optimal location measured from the acromion (38% of the distance from the lateral edge of acromion to the spine of the seventh cervical vertebra) which was statistically the same for all the EMG descriptors, arm positions and IED investigated. Finally, it was found that both EMG variables and indexes of muscle fatigue depended on IED which should thus be properly standardised. On the basis of the sensitivity of the EMG descriptors to electrode location and cross-talk reduction, an IED of 20 mm is suggested when a global analysis of activity in the upper trapezius muscle is made using a single pair of electrodes. This study emphasises that a surface EMG analysis of the upper trapezius muscle, following a proper placement of the electrodes and selection of IED, can give reliable indications of muscle activity and fatigue. Data on the myoelectric manifestations of muscle fatigue of the upper trapezius muscle are provided for the optimal electrode location.

In spite of the prevailing view, which considers mechanics as the real cause of such effects, here, we propose a different argument, purely based on geometry. Thus, as happened for relativity, geometry could again hold an unexpected and fundamental role.
