Abstract: Silicon area, performance, and testability have been, so far, the major design constraints to be met during the development of digital very-large-scale-integration (VLSI) systems. In recent years, however, things have changed; increasingly, power has been given weight comparable to the other design parameters. This is primarily due to the remarkable success of personal computing devices and wireless communication systems, which demand high-speed computations with low power consumption. In addition, there exists a strong pressure for manufacturers of high-end products to keep power under control, due to the increased costs of packaging and cooling this type of device. Last, the need of ensuring high circuit reliability has turned out to be more stringent. The availability of tools for the automatic design of low-power VLSI systems has thus become necessary. More specifically, following a natural trend, the interests of the researchers have lately shifted to the investigation of power modeling, estimation, synthesis, and optimization techniques that account for power dissipation during the early stages of the design flow. This paper surveys representative contributions to this area that have appeared in the recent literature.

Abstract: Under the assumption of a frequency-flat slow Rayleigh fading channel with multiple transmit and receive antennas, we examine the effects of imperfect estimation of the channel parameters on error probability when known pilot symbols are transmitted among information data. Three different receivers are considered. The first one derives an estimate of the channel [by using either a maximum-likelihood (ML) or a minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion], and then uses this estimate in the same metric that would be applied if the channel were perfectly known. The second receiver derives again an estimate of the channel, but uses the ML metric conditioned on the channel estimate. Our last receiver simultaneously processes the pilot and data symbols received. Simulation results are exhibited, showing that only a relatively small percentage of the transmitted frame need be allocated to pilot symbols in order to experience an acceptable degradation of error probability due to imperfect channel knowledge. Algorithms for the recursive calculation of the decision metric of the last two receivers are also developed for application to sequential decoding of trellis space-time codes.

Abstract: In this paper, promising technologies and a network architecture are presented for future optical packet switched networks. The overall network concept is presented and the major choices are highlighted and compared with alternative solutions. Both long and shorter term approaches are considered, as well as both the wide-area network and multiple-area networks parts of the network. The results presented in this paper were developed in the frame of the research project DAVID (Data And Voice Integration over DWDM) project, funded by the European Commission through the IST-framework.

Abstract: This work addresses the static analysis of functionally graded material plates subjected to transverse mechanical loadings. The unified formulation and principle of virtual displacements are employed to obtain both closed-form and finite element solutions. The use of the unified formulation permits a large variety of plate models with variable kinematic assumptions to be compared in the same framework. These differ according to the order of the expansion in the thickness direction and the variable description: the order of the expansion ranges from 1 to 4, thus covering first-order as well as higher-order theories; the description of the unknowns can be equivalent single layer or layerwise. The dependence of the material data on the thickness direction was introduced by employing thickness functions that are derived from the Legendre polynomials that are used in the layerwise case. The proposed approach is independent of the used transition function, and as a result, any continuous variations of the material properties in the thickness direction may be easily implemented. The obtained solutions (closed form and finite element) are validated through comparison with three-dimensional exact solutions and other available solutions. These show the limitations of classical plate theories as well as the convenience of the use of the proposed variable kinematic models for the analysis of functionally graded material plates.
