Abstract: The development of every new generation of wireless communication systems starts with bold, high-level requirements and predictions of its capabilities. The 5G system will not only have to surpass previous generations with respect to rate and capacity, but also address new usage scenarios with very diverse requirements, including various kinds of machine-type communication. Following this, the METIS project has developed a 5G system concept consisting of three generic 5G services: extreme mobile broadband, massive machine-type communication, and ultra-reliable MTC, supported by four main enablers: a lean system control plane, a dynamic radio access network, localized contents and traffic flows, and a spectrum toolbox. This article describes the most important system-level 5G features, enabled by the concept, necessary to meet the very diverse 5G requirements. System-level evaluation results of the METIS 5G system concept are presented, and we conclude that the 5G requirements can be met with the proposed system concept.

Abstract: Porous materials such as zeolites contain well-defined pores in molecular dimensions and have important industrial applications in catalysis, sorption and separation. Aluminosilicates with intersecting 10- and 12-ring channels are particularly interesting as selective catalysts. Many porous materials, especially zeolites, form only nanosized powders and some are intergrowths of different structures, making structure determination very challenging. Here, we report the atomic structures of an aluminosilicate zeolite family, ITQ-39, solved from nanocrystals only a few unit cells in size by electron crystallography. ITQ-39 is an intergrowth of three different polymorphs, built from the same layer but with different stacking sequences. ITQ-39 contains stacking faults and twinning with nano-sized domains, being the most complex zeolite ever solved. The unique structure of ITQ-39, with a three-dimensional intersecting pairwise 12-ring and 10-ring pore system, makes it a promising catalyst for converting naphtha into diesel fuel, a process of emerging interest for the petrochemical industry.

Abstract: Reducing water availability is one way to preserve food. Water in solid foods is transferred to a fluid, either gas or liquid; during this process both internal and external resistance affect water transfer from the food. As a consequence, any means to reduce those resistances constitute an improvement of the process, and ultrasound appears to be a way to reduce those resistances. Ultrasound are mechanical waves that produce different effects when travelling through a medium. Among others, those related to mass transfer include micro-stirring at the interface, the so called 'sponge effect' and cavitations. Ultrasound has so far been applied to dehydration in solid-gas systems like onion drying. Nevertheless, the difficulties for the propagation in the air have led to the development of specially adapted transducers that have been applied in the drying of carrots. In solid-liquid systems, ultrasound has been used in the treatment of products immersed in hypertonic solutions, either in sugar solutions for fruits like apples or in salt brine in the case of cheese or meat. An increase in mass transfer is achieved if the threshold power value for the product is attained. (A)
