TL;DR: It is shown that auxin and gibberellins (GAs) act in a hierarchical scheme and this evidence suggests a model in which fertilization would trigger an auxin-mediated promotion of GA synthesis specifically in the ovule.
Abstract: Fruit development is usually triggered by ovule fertilization, and it requires coordination between seed development and the growth and differentiation of the ovary to host the seeds. Hormones are known to synchronize these two processes, but the role of each hormone, and the mechanism by which they interact, are still unknown. Here we show that auxin and gibberellins (GAs) act in a hierarchical scheme. The synthetic reporter construct DR5:GFP showed that fertilization triggered an increase in auxin response in the ovules, which could be mimicked by blocking polar auxin transport. As the application of GAs did not affect auxin response, the most likely sequence of events after fertilization involves auxin-mediated activation of GA synthesis. We have confirmed this, and have shown that GA biosynthesis upon fertilization is localized specifically in the fertilized ovules. Furthermore, auxin treatment caused changes in the expression of GA biosynthetic genes similar to those triggered by fertilization, and also restricted to the ovules. Finally, GA signaling was activated in ovules and valves, as shown by the rapid downregulation of the fusion protein RGA-GFP after pollination and auxin treatment. Taken together, this evidence suggests a model in which fertilization would trigger an auxin-mediated promotion of GA synthesis specifically in the ovule. The GAs synthesized in the ovules would be then transported to the valves to promote GA signaling and thus coordinate growth of the silique.

TL;DR: In this paper, five low-GWP R134a possible choices have been tested and compared in an identical refrigerating facility equipped with a hermetic compressor, under the same operating conditions.
Abstract: In 2014, the Directive 517/2014 was introduced by European Parliament to reduce the use of high-GWP greenhouse gases in the European area in order to limit global climate change in accordance with the objectives marked by the EU Research and Innovation programme Horizon 2020. These restrictions affect the large majority of artificial refrigerants among which R134a is included due to its relatively high GWP100 (1301). The widely used of R134a in the refrigeration and air conditioning fields reveals the need to identify new low-GWP alternatives. Accordingly, in this work five low-GWP R134a possible choices have been tested and compared in an identical refrigerating facility equipped with a hermetic compressor, under the same operating conditions. The refrigerants used in this analysis are: R290 and R600a (HCs); R134a and R152a (HFCs), and finally, R1234yf and R1234ze(E) (HFOs). All of them have been assayed without changes in the facility, that is, as direct drop-ins. The results obtained from the experimental tests are presented and commented in this work from the energetic point of view.

TL;DR: Overexpression of a yeast gene, HAL2, allows the cells to tolerate higher than normal extracellular salt concentrations and offers routes by which genetic engineering can be used to improve the tolerance of various organisms to salt.
Abstract: Overexpression of a yeast gene, HAL2, allows the cells to tolerate higher than normal extracellular salt concentrations. HAL2 encodes a 3'(2')5'-bisphosphate nucleotidase that serves to remove the end products of sulfate transfer during cellular metabolism. The enzyme is inhibited by lithium and sodium and is activated by potassium. Metabolic systems that are sensitive to salt, as well as those governing osmolyte synthesis and ion transport, offer routes by which genetic engineering can be used to improve the tolerance of various organisms to salt.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigate the extent to which research quality and geographical proximity affect the frequency of the collaborations between university departments and businesses and explore the factors affecting the geographical distance of university-business partnerships.
Abstract: This paper focuses on one particular type of linkage between university and business - joint research partnerships - and addresses two specific issues. First, it investigates the extent to which research quality and geographical proximity bear an influence on the frequency of the collaborations between university departments and businesses. Second, it explores the factors affecting the geographical distance of university-business partnerships. Our findings show that both geographical proximity and research quality are positively associated with the frequency of university-industry partnerships; though, results are not homogenous across scientific disciplines. Our results also show that distance between university and business partners exhibit a curvilinear (inverted-U shape) relationship with the research excellence of university departments. © 2010 the author(s).
