Abstract: To assess the association between gender and suicide attempt/death and identify gender-specific risk/protective factors in adolescents/young adults. Systematic review (5 databases until January 2017). Population-based longitudinal studies considering non-clinical populations, aged 12–26 years, assessing associations between gender and suicide attempts/death, or evaluating their gender risk/protective factors, were included. Random effect meta-analyses were performed. Sixty-seven studies were included. Females presented higher risk of suicide attempt (OR 1.96, 95% CI 1.54–2.50), and males for suicide death (HR 2.50, 95% CI 1.8–3.6). Common risk factors of suicidal behaviors for both genders are previous mental or substance abuse disorder and exposure to interpersonal violence. Female-specific risk factors for suicide attempts are eating disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, being victim of dating violence, depressive symptoms, interpersonal problems and previous abortion. Male-specific risk factors for suicide attempt are disruptive behavior/conduct problems, hopelessness, parental separation/divorce, friend’s suicidal behavior, and access to means. Male-specific risk factors for suicide death are drug abuse, externalizing disorders, and access to means. For females, no risk factors for suicide death were studied. More evidence about female-specific risk/protective factors of suicide death, for adolescent/young adults, is needed.

Abstract: The authors review evidence that spontaneous, that is, not stimulus or task driven, activity in the brain at the level of large-scale neural systems is not noise, but orderly and organized in a series of functional networks that maintain, at all times, a high level of coherence. These networks of spontaneous activity correlation or resting state networks (RSN) are closely related to the underlying anatomical connectivity, but their topography is also gated by the history of prior task activation. Network coherence does not depend on covert cognitive activity, but its strength and integrity relates to behavioral performance. Some RSN are functionally organized as dynamically competing systems both at rest and during tasks. Computational studies show that one of such dynamics, the anticorrelation between networks, depends on noise-driven transitions between different multistable cluster synchronization states. These multistable states emerge because of transmission delays between regions that are modeled as coupled oscillators systems. Large-scale systems dynamics are useful for keeping different functional subnetworks in a state of heightened competition, which can be stabilized and fired by even small modulations of either sensory or internal signals.

Abstract: In this paper, we model $M\times N$ orthogonal time frequency space modulation (OTFS) over a $P$ -path doubly dispersive channel with delays less than $\tau _{\max }$ and Doppler shifts in the range $( u _{\min }, u _{\max })$ . We first derive in a simple matrix form the input–output relation in the delay-Doppler domain for practical (e.g., rectangular) pulse-shaping waveforms, next generalize it to arbitrary waveforms. This relation extends the original OTFS input–output approach, which assumes ideal pulse-shaping waveforms that are bi-orthogonal in both time and frequency. We show that the OTFS input–output relation has a simple sparse structure that enables one to use low-complexity detection algorithms. Different from previous work, only a single cyclic prefix is added at the end of the OTFS frame, significantly reducing the overhead, without incurring any penalty from the loss of bi-orthogonality of the pulse-shaping waveforms. Finally, we compare the OTFS performance with different pulse-shaping waveforms, and show that the reduction of out-of-band power may introduce nonuniform channel gains for the transmitted symbols, thus impairing the overall error performance.

Abstract: Background: Animal and in vitro studies suggest that phenolic compounds in virgin olive oil are effective antioxidants. In animal and in vitro studies, hydroxytyrosol and its metabolites have been shown to be strong antioxidants. One of the prerequisites to assess their in vivo physiologic significance is to determine their presence in human plasma. Methods: We developed an analytical method for both hydroxytyrosol and 3- O -methyl-hydroxytyrosol in plasma. The administered dose of phenolic compounds was estimated from methanolic extracts of virgin olive oil after subjecting them to different hydrolytic treatments. Plasma and urine samples were collected from 0 to 12 h before and after 25 mL of virgin olive oil intake, a dose close to that used as daily intake in Mediterranean countries. Samples were analyzed by capillary gas chromatography–mass spectrometry before and after being subjected to acidic and enzymatic hydrolytic treatments. Results: Calibration curves were linear ( r >0.99). Analytical recoveries were 42–60%. Limits of quantification were <1.5 mg/L. Plasma hydroxytyrosol and 3- O -methyl-hydroxytyrosol increased as a response to virgin olive oil administration, reaching maximum concentrations at 32 and 53 min, respectively ( P <0.001 for quadratic trend). The estimated hydroxytyrosol elimination half-life was 2.43 h. Free forms of these phenolic compounds were not detected in plasma samples. Conclusions: The proposed analytical method permits quantification of hydroxytyrosol and 3- O -methyl-hydroxytyrosol in plasma after real-life doses of virgin olive oil. From our results, ∼98% of hydroxytyrosol appears to be present in plasma and urine in conjugated forms, mainly glucuronoconjugates, suggesting extensive first-pass intestinal/hepatic metabolism of the ingested hydroxytyrosol.
