Abstract: A deformation invariant representation of surfaces, the GPS embedding, is introduced using the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami differential operator. Notably, since the definition of the GPS embedding completely avoids the use of geodesic distances, and is based on objects of global character, the obtained representation is robust to local topology changes. The GPS embedding captures enough information to handle various shape processing tasks as shape classification, segmentation, and correspondence. To demonstrate the practical relevance of the GPS embedding, we introduce a deformation invariant shape descriptor called G2-distributions, and demonstrate their discriminative power, invariance under natural deformations, and robustness.

Abstract: The structure and morphology of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) gels prepared by repeated cycles of 8 h freezing at −20 °C and 4 h thawing at +25 °C were examined. Long-term morphological changes of such gels were determined upon swelling in water at 37 °C for 6 months. The preparation conditions were examined by varying such parameters as the number of freezing and thawing cycles, the concentration of aqueous solution, and the PVA molecular weight. The overall structure and stability were examined in terms of water content, fractional PVA dissolution, degree of crystallinity, and crystal size distribution. An increase in the number of freezing and thawing cycles served to reinforce existing crystals within the structure. Increased initial concentrations of aqueous PVA solutions resulted in hydrogels that contained initially higher crystallinity and added stability upon swelling. Abstract: This article summarizes the changes in landscape structure because of human land managementoverthelastseveralcenturies,andusingobservedandmodeleddata, documents how these changes have altered biogeophysical and biogeochemical surface fluxes on the local, mesoscale, and regional scales. Remaining research issues are presented including whether these landscape changes alter large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns far from where the land use and land cover changes occur. We conclude that existing climate assessments have not yet adequately factored in this climate forcing. For those regions that have undergone intensive human landscape change, or would undergo intensive change in the future, we conclude that the failure to factor in this forcing risks a misalignment of investment in climate mitigation and adaptation. 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract: The Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology’s laboratory has adopted four “bench top” bioassays which do not require higher animals to screen and direct the fractionation of botanical extracts in drug discovery efforts. These are: 1. The brine shrimp lethality test (BST) (a general bioassay), 2. The inhibition of crown gall tumors on discs of potato tubers (an antitumor bioassay), 3. The inhibition of frond proliferation in duckweed (a bioassay for herbicides and plant growth stimulants), and 4. The yellow fever mosquito larvae lethality test (a bioassay for pesticides). The materials and procedures for those bioassays will be briefly described. The authors’ results in applying these simple methods in the discovery of Annonaceous acetogenins will be presented to illustrate their successful use. The BST is especially suggested as an inexpensive, simple, and rapid means of standardization of bioactivity in heterogeneous botanical products.
