Abstract: Queueing network models have proved to be cost effectwe tools for analyzing modern computer systems. This tutorial paper presents the basic results using the operational approach, a framework which allows the analyst to test whether each assumption is met in a given system. The early sections describe the nature of queueing network models and their apphcations for calculating and predicting performance quantitms The basic performance quantities--such as utilizations, mean queue lengths, and mean response tunes--are defined, and operatmnal relationships among them are derwed Following this, the concept of job flow balance is introduced and used to study asymptotic throughputs and response tunes. The concepts of state transition balance, one-step behavior, and homogeneity are then used to relate the proportions of time that each system state is occupied to the parameters of job demand and to dewce charactenstms Efficmnt methods for computing basic performance quantities are also described. Finally the concept of decomposition is used to stmphfy analyses by replacing subsystems with equivalent devices. All concepts are illustrated liberally with examples

Abstract: The structure of a bacterial superantigen, Staphylococcus aureus enterotoxin B, bound to a human class II histocompatibility complex molecule (HLA-DR1) has been determined by X-ray crystallography. The superantigen binds as an intact protein outside the conventional peptide antigen-binding site of the class II major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecule. No large conformational changes occur upon complex formation in either the DR1 or the enterotoxin B molecules. The structure of the complex helps explain how different class II molecules and superantigens associate and suggests a model for ternary complex formation with the T-cell antigen receptor (TCR), in which unconventional TCR-MHC contacts are possible.

Abstract: High-performance enhancement-mode semiconducting carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (CNTFETs) are obtained by combining ohmic metal-tube contacts, high-dielectric-constant HfO2 films as gate insulators, and electrostatically doped nanotube segments as source/drain electrodes. The combination of these elements affords high ON currents and subthreshold swings of 70-80 mV/decade and allows for low OFF currents and suppressed ambipolar conduction. The doped source and drain approach resembles that of MOSFETs and can impart excellent OFF states to nanotube FETs under aggressive vertical scaling. This presents an important advantage over devices with a metal source/drain, or devices commonly referred to as Schottky barrier FETs.
