TL;DR: Two types of artificial muscles that convert the chemical energy of high–energy-density fuels to mechanical energy are demonstrated that provide actuator stroke and power density comparable to those of natural skeletal muscle and generated stresses that are over a hundred times higher.
Abstract: Artificial muscles and electric motors found in autonomous robots and prosthetic limbs are typically battery-powered, which severely restricts the duration of their performance and can necessitate long inactivity during battery recharge. To help solve these problems, we demonstrated two types of artificial muscles that convert the chemical energy of high-energy-density fuels to mechanical energy. The first type stores electrical charge and uses changes in stored charge for mechanical actuation. In contrast with electrically powered electrochemical muscles, only half of the actuator cycle is electrochemical. The second type of fuel-powered muscle provides a demonstrated actuator stroke and power density comparable to those of natural skeletal muscle and generated stresses that are over a hundred times higher.

TL;DR: In this article, the Scalar Product method, a two-particle correlation technique, using a pseudo-rapidity gap of |Delta eta| > 0.9 between the identified hadron under study and the reference particles, was used to measure the elliptic flow coefficient of identified particles in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV.
Abstract: The elliptic flow coefficient (v(2)) of identified particles in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV was measured with the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The results were obtained with the Scalar Product method, a two-particle correlation technique, using a pseudo-rapidity gap of |Delta eta| > 0.9 between the identified hadron under study and the reference particles. The v (2) is reported for pi(+/-), K-+/-, K-S(0), p+(p) over bar, phi, Lambda+(Lambda) over bar, Xi+(Xi) over bar (+) and Omega(-)+(Omega) over bar (+) in several collision centralities. In the low transverse momentum (p(T)) region, p(T) 3 GeV/c.

TL;DR: In this article, the performance of Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) forecasts from NCEP's coupled and uncoupled general circulation models (GCMs) and statistical models is evaluated in near real time.
Abstract: This work examines the performance of Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) forecasts from NCEP's coupled and uncoupled general circulation models (GCMs) and statistical models. The forecast skill from these methods is evaluated in near-real time. Using a projection of El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO)-removed variables onto the principal patterns of MJO convection and upper- and lower-level circulations, MJO-related signals in the dynamical model forecasts are extracted. The operational NCEP atmosphere-ocean fully coupled Climate Forecast System (CFS) model has useful skill (.0.5 correlation) out to ;15 days when the initial MJO convection is located over the Indian Ocean. The skill of the CFS hindcast dataset for the period from 1995 to 2004 is nearly comparable to that from a lagged multiple linear regression model, which uses information from the previous five pentads of the leading two principal components (PCs). In contrast, the real-time analysis for the MJO forecast skill for the period from January 2005 to February 2006 using the lagged multiple linear regression modelisreducedto ;10-12days. However, theoperationalCFSforecastfor thisperiod is skillfulout to ;17 days for the winter season, implying that the coupled dynamical forecast has some usefulness in pre- dicting the MJO compared to the statistical model. It is shown that the coupled CFS model consistently, but only slightly, outperforms the uncoupled atmo- spheric model (by one to two days), indicating that only limited improvement is gained from the inclusion of the coupled air-sea interaction in the MJO forecast in this model. This slight improvement may be the result of the existence of a propagation barrier around the Maritime Continent and the far western Pacific in the NCEP Global Forecast System (GFS) and CFS models, as shown in several previous studies. This work also suggests that the higher horizontal resolution and finer initial data might contribute to improving the forecast skill, presumably as a result of an enhanced representation of the Maritime Continent region.

TL;DR: In this paper, four different kinds of photovoltaic polymers were synthesized by controlling the intrachain noncovalent coulomb interactions through the incorporation of alkoxy- or alkylthio-substituted phenylene, 4,7-di(furan-2-yl)benzothiadiazole, and 4, 7-di (thiophen-2.yl) benzothiamide as a building block.
Abstract: Four different kinds of photovoltaic polymers were synthesized by controlling the intrachain noncovalent coulomb interactions through the incorporation of alkoxy- or alkylthio-substituted phenylene, 4,7-di(furan-2-yl)benzothiadiazole, and 4,7-di(thiophen-2-yl)benzothiadiazole as a building block. Fine modulation of the interplay of dipole–dipole, H-bond, and chalcogen–chalcogen interactions (O···S, O···H, S···S, S···F, etc.) along the polymeric backbone influenced the chain planarity, interchain organization, film morphology, and electrical and photovoltaic properties significantly. By replacing the alkoxy substituents with alkylthio groups, the torsional angle increased (136–168°) due to the absence of an O···S attractive coulomb interaction (and/or increased S···S steric hindrance), enhancing the amorphous nature with hindered interchain packing. The alkoxy-substituted polymers exhibited nanofibrillar structures, showing strong interlamellar scattering peaks up to (300) with tight face-on π–π stacking i...
