TL;DR: In this paper, a multi-antenna transmitting entity transmits data to a single- or multi-entenna receiving entity using (1) a steered mode to direct the data transmission toward the receiving entity or (2) a pseudo-random transmit steering (PRTS) mode to randomize the effective channels observed by data transmission across the subbands.
Abstract: A multi-antenna transmitting entity transmits data to a single- or multi-antenna receiving entity using (1) a steered mode to direct the data transmission toward the receiving entity or (2) a pseudo-random transmit steering (PRTS) mode to randomize the effective channels observed by the data transmission across the subbands. For transmit diversity, the transmitting entity uses different pseudo-random steering vectors across the subbands but the same steering vector across a packet for each subband. The receiving entity does not need to have knowledge of the pseudo-random steering vectors or perform any special processing. For spatial spreading, the transmitting entity uses different pseudo-random steering vectors across the subbands and different steering vectors across the packet for each subband. Only the transmitting and receiving entities know the steering vectors used for data transmission. Other aspects, embodiments, and features are also claimed and disclosed.

Abstract: Methods and devices provide a user interface that provides visual cues when a document pan or scroll has reached an end or boundary by distorting the document image in response to further user inputs. The image distortion functionality may include shrinking, stretching, accordion expansion, or bouncing of a document image. The degree of image distortion may be proportional to the distance that a user input would have the document move beyond the encountered boundary. When a boundary of a document image is reached during a rapid pan or scroll, a bouncing image distortion may be applied to the document image to inform the user that the document reached a boundary during the movement.

TL;DR: In this paper, a transmitter (120) broadcasts a first TDM pilot on a first set of subbands followed by a second pilot on the second set in each frame, where the subbands in each set are selected from among N total subbands such that an OFDM symbol for the first pilot contains at least Sl identical pilot-1 sequences of length Ll and S 2 identical pilot -2 sequences of lengths L 2 where L 2 > Ll, Sl x Ll = N, and S2 x L 2 = N.
Abstract: In an OFDM system, a transmitter (120) broadcasts a first TDM pilot on a first set of subbands followed by a second TDM pilot on a second set of subbands in each frame. The subbands in each set are selected from among N total subbands such that (1) an OFDM symbol for the first TDM pilot contains at least Sl identical pilot-1 sequences of length Ll and (2) an OFDM symbol for the second TDM pilot contains at least S2 identical pilot-2 sequences of length L2, where L2 > Ll, Sl x Ll = N, and S2 x L2 = N. The transmitter (120) may also broadcast an FDM pilot. A receiver ( 170) processes the first TDM pilot to obtain frame timing (e.g., by performing correlation between different pilot-1 sequences) and further processes the second TDM pilot to obtain symbol timing (e.g., by detecting for the start of a channel impulse response estimate derived from teh second TDM pilot).

TL;DR: In this article, a deployment and distribution model improves content delivery with a business incentive for placement of kiosks with one or more wireless access points in public locations so that portable media players (PMPs) can receive media content (e.g., audio, video, text, haptic content, etc.).
Abstract: A deployment and distribution model improves content delivery with a business incentive for placement of kiosks (308) with one or more wireless access points in public locations so that portable media players (PMPs) can receive media content (e.g., audio, video, text, haptic content, etc.). In addition, coordination between subscribing users of PMPs (310), vendors who provide kiosks, and a network central controller (306) of a content distribution system (300) allow for prepositioning of video content at the kiosks through economically desirable low data rate communication links from the network (e.g., dial- up modem, DSL, etc.); coordinated queuing of downloads (e.g., partial downloads) between kiosk to PMP, peer-to-peer (P2P) downloading between PMPs, and uploads from PMP to kiosk; billing/crediting to correspond with such participation in the distribution; and changing priority/selection of prepositioning of content at kiosks to reflect a clientele profile.

TL;DR: In this article, a transmitter and a second gain element are configured and arranged to modulate a radio-frequency signal according to a first gain factor to produce a first output signal.
Abstract: An apparatus according to one embodiment of the invention includes a transmitter. The transmitter comprises a first gain element configured and arranged to modulate a radio-frequency signal according to a first gain factor to produce a first output signal; and a second gain element configured and arranged to modulate the radio-frequency signal according to a second gain factor to produce a second output signal, wherein a magnitude of the first gain factor varies over time, and wherein a magnitude of the second gain factor varies over time with respect ot the magnitude of the first gain factor. Each of the modulated signals is coupled to a respective antenna. The combined radiation pattern of the antennas varies in an angular direction over time. In a system according to one embodiment of the invention, a base station including such an apparatus receives channel quality indications from mobile units and schedules data transmissions to the mobile units accordingly.
