TL;DR: An apparatus and method for processing multimedia data, such as, for example, video data, audio data, or both video and audio data for encoding utilizing a determined content classification is claimed as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: An apparatus and method for processing multimedia data, such as, for example, video data, audio data, or both video and audio data for encoding utilizing a determined content classification is claimed. Processing the multimedia data includes determining complexity of multimedia data, classifying the multimedia data based on the determined complexity, and, determining a bit rate for encoding the multimedia data based on its classification. The complexity can include a spatial complexity component and a temporal complexity component of the multimedia data. The multimedia data is classified using content classifications, which are based on a visual quality value for viewing multimedia data, using the spatial complexity, the temporal complexity, or both the spatial complexity and temporal complexity.

TL;DR: In this article, a combination of transmit diversity schemes (e.g., spatial spreading, continuous beamforming, cyclic delay diversity, space-time transmit diversity, SFTD, and orthogonal transmit diversity) are described.
Abstract: Techniques for transmitting data using a combination of transmit diversity schemes are described. These transmit diversity schemes include spatial spreading, continuous beamforming, cyclic delay diversity, space-time transmit diversity (STTD), space-frequency transmit diversity (SFTD), and orthogonal transmit diversity (OTD). A transmitting entity processes one or more (ND) data symbol streams based on a transmit diversity scheme (e.g., STTD, SFTD, or OTD) to generate multiple (NC) coded symbol streams. Each data symbol stream may be sent as a single coded symbol stream or as multiple (e.g., two) coded symbol streams using STTD, SFTD, or OTD. The transmitting entity may perform spatial spreading on the NC coded symbol streams with different matrices to generate multiple (NT) transmit symbol streams for transmission from NT antennas. Additionally or alternatively, the transmitting entity may perform continuous beamforming on the NT transmit symbol streams in either the time domain or the frequency domain.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present an approach and methods for generating performance statistics and providing for the display of the performance statistics on the wireless device, where the statistics can be generated at a wireless device or remotely, at a network device.
Abstract: Apparatus and methods for generating performance statistics and providing for the display of the performance statistics on the wireless device. The statistics can be generated at the wireless device or remotely, at a network device. Once the statistics are determined, they can be presented on the wireless device and can be accessible to either the user of the device and any other predetermined party. By providing for performance statistics at the wireless device, the user of the device or any other predetermined party, such as a service provider, can readily determine if a performance problem is related to the device or to the network.

TL;DR: In this article, the reverse link power control bits from multiples base stations or multiple signal paths are measured, combined, and filtered to yield an improved measurement of the forward link signal quality.
Abstract: A forward link power control mechanism measures the reverse link power control bits which are transmitted on the forward traffic channel. At the remote station, the reverse link power control bits from multiples base stations or multiple signal paths are measured, combined, and filtered to yield an improved measurement of the forward link signal quality. The reverse link power control bits which are deemed unreliable are omitted from use in the power control loop. The remote station generates a set of forward link power control bit in accordance with the measurements and transmits these bits to all base stations in communication with the remote station. Each base station adjusts its gain of the forward traffic channel in accordance to its measurement of the forward link power control bit.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method and apparatus for controlling a data rate associated with the transmission of information from a base station (100) to a mobile station (300) in a mobile radio communication system is presented.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling a data rate associated with the transmission of information from a base station (100) to a mobile station (300) in a mobile radio communication system. The mobile station (300) alternately receives information from a basestation (100) either in a variable rate mode or a fixed rate mode. The transmission rate from a base station (600) in the variable rate mode varies between successive data transmit intervals, and the transmission rate from a base station in the fixed rate mode remains fixed between successive data transmit intervals. Data is transmitted from a first base station (400) to the mobile station in the variable rate mode until the first base station is unable to receive the variable data rate control information from the mobile station. When the first base station (400) is unable to receive the variable data rate control information from the mobile station (300), the mobile station (300) attempts to remain in the variable rate mode by searching for a second base station that will support data transmissions to the mobile station (300) in the variable rate mode and, if the mobile station (300) is able to locate the second base station that will support data transmissions to the mobile station in the variable rate mode, then the second base station transmits data to the mobile station in the variable rate mode and transmissions from the first base station to the mobile station (300) in the variable rate mode terminate. If the mobile station is unable to locate the second base station that will support data transmissions to the mobile station in the variable rate mode, data is transmitted to the mobile station (300) from either the first base station (400) or a different base station in the fixed rate mode.
