Abstract: We present a family of reduced reference video quality assessment (QA) models that utilize spatial and temporal entropic differences. We adopt a hybrid approach of combining statistical models and perceptual principles to design QA algorithms. A Gaussian scale mixture model for the wavelet coefficients of frames and frame differences is used to measure the amount of spatial and temporal information differences between the reference and distorted videos, respectively. The spatial and temporal information differences are combined to obtain the spatio-temporal-reduced reference entropic differences. The algorithms are flexible in terms of the amount of side information required from the reference that can range between a single scalar per frame and the entire reference information. The spatio-temporal entropic differences are shown to correlate quite well with human judgments of quality, as demonstrated by experiments on the LIVE video quality assessment database.

Abstract: Aura-net is a mobile communications system whose function realizes a new form of proximityaware networking, and whose form points in the direction of a "Proximity-aware Internetwork." The system is founded on an implementation of a "wireless sense." The existence of such a sense, it is argued, is essential for realization of a vision of Ubiquitous Computing famously expounded by Mark Weiser [1]. Moreover, current wireless technologies are ill-suited to enabling this vision. The proposed wireless technology (FlashLinQ) is described at a conceptual and tutorial level.

Abstract: Since the early 1970s, for power-limited applications, the convolutional code constraint length K=7 and rate 1/2, optimum in the sense of maximum free distance and minimum number of bit errors caused by remerging paths at the free distance, has become the de facto standard for coded digital communication. This was reinforced when punctured versions of this code became the standard for rate 3/4 and 7/8 codes for moderately bandlimited channels. Methods are described for using the same K=7, rate 1/2 convolutional code with signal phase constellations of 8-PSK and 160PSK and quadrature amplitude constellations of 16-QASK, 64-QASK, and 256-QASK to achieve, respectively, 2 and 3, and 2, 4, and 6 b/s/Hz bandwidth efficiencies while providing power efficiency that in most cases is virtually equivalent to that of the best Ungerboeck codes for constraint length 7 or 64 states. In a particular embodiment, a method includes detecting a hardware configuration change from a first configuration to a second configuration at an electronic device that includes at least a first panel having a first display surface and a second panel having a second display surface. The hardware configuration change includes a change in a relative orientation of the first display panel to the second display panel. The method also includes automatically modifying a graphical user interface displayed at the first display surface and the second display surface at least partially based on the second configuration.

Abstract: Transmitter and receiver units for use in an OFDM communications system and configurable to support multiple types of services. The transmitter unit includes one or more encoders, a symbol mapping element, and a modulator. Each encoder receives and codes a respective channel data stream to generate a corresponding coded data stream. The symbol mapping element receives and maps data from the coded data streams to generate modulation symbol vectors, with each modulation symbol vector including a set of data values used to modulate a set of tones to generate an OFDM symbol. The modulator modulates the modulation symbol vectors to provide a modulated signal suitable for transmission. The data from each coded data stream is mapped to a respective set of one or more “circuits”. Each circuit can be defined to include a number of tones from a number of OFDM symbols, a number of tones from a single OFDM symbol, all tones from one or more OFDM symbols, or some other combination of tones. The circuits can have equal size or different sizes. Different circuits can be used for full rate data (e.g., active speech) and low rate data (e.g., silence periods).
