Abstract: Summary Wound area changes over multiple weeks are highly predictive of the wound healing process. A big data eHealth system would be very helpful in evaluating these changes. We usually analyze images of the wound bed for diagnosing injury. Unfortunately, accurate measurements of wound region changes from images are difficult. Many factors affect the quality of images, such as intensity inhomogeneity and color distortion. To this end, we propose a fast level set model-based method for intensity inhomogeneity correction and a spectral properties-based color correction method to overcome these obstacles. State-of-the-art level set methods can segment objects well. However, such methods are time-consuming and inefficient. In contrast to conventional approaches, the proposed model integrates a new signed energy force function that can detect contours at weak or blurred edges efficiently. It ensures the smoothness of the level set function and reduces the computational complexity of re-initialization. To increase the speed of the algorithm further, we also include an additive operator-splitting algorithm in our fast level set model. In addition, we consider using a camera, lighting, and spectral properties to recover the actual color. Numerical synthetic and real-world images demonstrate the advantages of the proposed method over state-of-the-art methods. Experimental results also show that the proposed model is at least twice as fast as methods used widely. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract: Generating function techniques for analyzing the error event and the bit-error probabilities for trellis codes are considered. The conventional state diagram approach for linear codes where the number of states is equal to the number of trellis states cannot be applied directly to arbitrary trellis codes, and instead, a state diagram where the number of states is equal to the square of the number of trellis states must be used. It is shown that for an interesting class of trellis codes a modified generating function can be defined for which the number of states {\em is equal to} the number of trellis states. The class of codes considered includes trellis codes of rate R=(n-1)/n based upon set partitioning whenever the first partition breaks the signal constellation into two subsets which have the same "configuration matrix," i.e., the same ordered set of mutual distances. The complexity of calculating this modified generating function is the same as for the ordinary generating function of a convolutional code with the same number of trellis states. Bounds on the performance of some interesting codes are given based upon this method.

Abstract: Techniques to more efficiently transmit pilot and signaling on the uplink in an OFDM system. With subband multiplexing, M usable subbands in the system are partitioned into Q disjoint groups of subbands. Each subband group may be assigned to a different terminal for uplink pilot transmission. Multiple terminals may transmit simultaneously on their assigned subbands. The transmit power for the pilot may be scaled higher to attain the same total pilot energy even though S instead of M subbands are used for pilot transmission by each terminal. Pilot transmissions from the terminals are received, and a channel estimate is derived for each terminal based on the pilot received on the assigned subbands. The channel estimate comprises a response for additional subbands not included in the assigned group. Subband multiplexing may also be used for uplink signaling transmission.
