Abstract: We studied 13 ruff leks in a small region on the island of Gotland (Sweden) to investigate the effect of lek size on the costs and benefits of lekking for individual males. Male ruffs occur in two behaviourally and morphologically distinct forms, “independents” (“residents” plus “marginals”) and “satellites”, whose costs and benefits we have assessed separately. These ruff leks had from 1–10 resident (territory-holding) males and were visited daily by satellites, marginals and females from 5–25 May, when most copulations occurred. We used the average number of independent males, counted during censuses taken every 5 min during 2-h observation periods at each lek, as an index of mean lek size. Per independent male, the numbers of both satellites and females increased significantly with mean lek size. Female arrival rate and attendance (total female-minutes) also increased significantly with mean lek size as did the average per capita rate of mating success for resident males (that of satellites was not quite significant). Thus, the dispersion of both of these male categories did not appear to fit an ideal free distribution with respect to mating success. In addition, the number of independent-independent fights per independent and the rate of satellite-resident dyad formation per resident increased significantly with mean lek size. These results suggest that ruffs on larger leks enjoy higher mating success than those on smaller leks but also that costs increase with lek size. We suggest that independent males distribute themselves so as to maximize their own net benefits and that this factor can account for both the occurrence of ruff leks and the variation in their size.

Abstract: The present work describes a procedure to calculate the effective diffusivity of a porous composite medium from the three-dimensional reconstruction of its microstructure. We perform Monte Carlo simulations based on the mean-square displacement method on numerical models of composite materials microstructures. First, computations of the effective diffusivity in the bulk diffusion regime account for the effect of the tortuosity of the geometry on gas diffusion. The Bruggeman equation, which is often used in the literature to relate the effective diffusivity to the porosity of the structure, appears to be inaccurate for porosities e<0.40. A more accurate correlation for this range of porosities is provided based on the results of our simulations. Second, the Bosanquet equation, which accounts for the effect of pore confinement on gas diffusion, is validated provided that the definition of the Knudsen number is based on the appropriate characteristic length. The procedure to calculate this characteristic length is demonstrated for analytical geometries. However, in practice, geometries obtained from experimental measurements are discrete. For discrete geometries, we show the effect of the resolution of the geometry on the accuracy of the calculation of the effective diffusivity and other properties of the porous material. In addition, the tesselation of solid surfaces affects the calculation of the chord-length distribution regardless of the resolution. This hinders the accurate estimation of the characteristic length necessary to compute the Knudsen number and the effective diffusivity.

Abstract: Knowledge–based enterprises (KBEs) are difficult to value owing to the relatively greater importance of their intangible assets, such as human capital and investment in innovation. Traditional valuation models rely on variables such as earnings, dividends and assets, which, for many KBEs, are either non–existent or are distorted by differing accounting practices. This paper reviews the various attempts by practitioners and academics to overcome these difficulties by such devices as different proxies for the valuation variables or different forms of the valuation equations. We then examine some theoretical approaches that provide novel approaches to valuation. Finally, we discuss the notion of the ‘fuzzy firm’, where traditional corporate boundaries have become amorphous, with the result that the firms require new valuation methodologies.

Abstract: A large population-based survey of persons with multiple sclerosis (MS) and their caregivers was conducted in Ontario using self-completed mailed questionnaires. The objectives included describing assistance arrangements, needs, and use of and satisfaction with services, and comparing perceptions of persons with MS and their caregivers. Response rates were 83% and 72% for those with MS and caregivers, respectively. Based on 697 respondents with MS whose mean age is 48 years, 70% are female, and 75% are married. While 24% experience no mobility restrictions, the majority require some type of aid or a wheelchair for getting around. Among 345 caregivers, who have been providing care for 9 years on average, the majority are spouses. Caregivers report providing more frequent care than do persons with MS report receiving it, particularly for the following activities of daily living: eating, meal preparation, and help with personal finances. Caregivers also report assistance of longer duration per day than do care recipients with MS. Frequency and duration of assistance are positively associated with increased MS symptom severity and reduced mobility. Generally there is no rural-urban disparity in service provision, utilization or satisfaction, and although there is a wide range of service utilization, satisfaction is consistently high. Respite care is rarely used by caregivers. Use of several services is positively associated with increased severity of MS symptoms and reduced mobility. Assistance arrangements and use of services, each from the point of view of persons with MS and their caregivers, must be taken into account in efforts to prolong home care and to postpone early institutionalization of persons with MS.
