TL;DR: The results confirm the idea that these compounds produced anaesthesia by prolonging inhibition by prolongeding inhibition (accompanied by a depression of the e.p.s.c. with some anaesthetics).
Abstract: Pentobarbitone, phenobarbitone, methohexitone, chloralose and alphaxalone produced 10-fold increases in the duration of an inhibitory post-synaptic conductance (i.p.s.c.) as recorded intracellularly from neurones of the guinea-pig olfactory cortex in vitro. Higher concentrations slightly depolarised these neurones and reduced their input resistances (Ri), presumably a spontaneous activation of the inhibitory conductance. The excitatory potentials were also depressed. Ketamine, halothane and urethane doubled the i.p.s.c. duration. Higher concentrations depressed synaptic activity and the action potential, as did lignocaine. Ketamine also increased Ri. These results confirm the idea that these compounds produced anaesthesia by prolonging inhibition (accompanied by a depression of the e.p.s.p. with some anaesthetics).

TL;DR: In this paper, the surface mass transfer coefficients for the rate of dye removal from solution have been determined and correlated as the dimensionless mass transfer term Sh/Sc0.33 with respect to four variables, namely, agitation, initial dye concentration, peat particle size range and the temperature of the dye solution.
Abstract: The factors affecting the initial rate of Telon Blue (Acid) dye adsorption onto peat have been investigated. The surface mass transfer coefficients for the rate of dye removal from solution have been determined and correlated as the dimensionless mass transfer term Sh/Sc0.33. The function Sh/Sc0.33 has been correlated with respect to four variables, namely, agitation, initial dye concentration, peat particle size range and the temperature of the dye solution. The mass transfer term varies with T5.5, dp0.13, co−1.1 and R.P.M.0.26; consequently temperature has the most pronounced effect on the mass transfer coefficient.

TL;DR: Midazolam, a new water‐soluble benzodiazepine, was given intravenously in 5 and 10 mg doses to nine volunteers and plasma levels estimated at intervals for 24 hours and there was no ‘second peak’ effect.
Abstract: Summary Midazolam, a new water-soluble benzodiazepine, was given intravenously in 5 and 10 mg doses to nine volunteers and plasma levels estimated at intervals for 24 hours. Recovery was also studied. The drug was easy and painless to inject and venous thrombosis was not found in this series. While there was a great individual variation in response to the drug this was not related to the weight of the subjects. Plasma levels declined rapidly and there was no ‘second peak’ effect. The half-life was between 60 and 90 min. Recovery was much more rapid than after comparable doses of diazepam.

TL;DR: In this article, a detailed account of the x-ray spectroscopic diagnosis of plasmas formed by exploding pusher microballoons is given, where the measurements of the electron temperature from the shell and from the core are described.
Abstract: A detailed account is given of the x-ray spectroscopic diagnosis of plasmas formed by exploding pusher microballoons. The measurements of the electron temperature from the shell and from the core is described. A method for self-consistently fitting all the observed lines of one state of ionization is shown, giving a diagnosis for the electron density and the opacity. Further, it is shown that the self-consistency is only achieved when full line-broadening calculations, taking into account the shifts and asymmetries dependent on the charge of the emitter, are used for the optically thin profiles. It is also shown that non-local-thermodynamic-equilibrium effects are important in the description of the radiation transfer.

TL;DR: The levels of four serum enzymes, known to be elevated in toxic hepatitis, were measured preoperatively and on the 3–4th and 13–15th postoperative days in patients anaesthetised with ketamine infusions or with a standard technique.
Abstract: Summary The levels of four serum enzymes, known to be elevated in toxic hepatitis, were measured preoperatively and on the 3–4th and 13–15th postoperative days in patients anaesthetised with ketamine infusions (54) or with a standard technique (64). Significant elevations in enzyme levels were considered to have occurred when the postoperative levels were outside the accepted normal range and had increased by more than 3 × SD from controls. About half the patients in each group had minor gynaecological operations and 2120 in the ketamine series had postoperative elevation of enzyme levels, with no changes in the non-ketamine group. Following intermediate operations 14134 anaesthetised with ketamine showed abnormal enzyme levels compared with 7/34 who had standard operations. None, of the latter had more than one abnormal test as compared with six in the ketamine series. The causes and significance of these findings are not known.

TL;DR: The patients receiving glycopyrrolate with neostigmine had smaller changes in heart rate than those who received atropine, and this was particularly apparent in patients with cardiovascular disease.
Abstract: Glycopyrrolate, a quaternary ammonium anticholinergic compound, and atropine were evaluated in combination with neostigmine for antagonism of non-depolarizing neuromuscular block. A total of 641 patients were investigated in a "true-to-life" situation. The patients receiving glycopyrrolate with neostigmine had smaller changes in heart rate than those who received atropine. This was particularly apparent in patients with cardiovascular disease.

TL;DR: In this article, the distortion effects in the second Born term were investigated and it was found that both approximations are viable for elastic scattering at high enough energies but unreliable for inelastic scattering.
Abstract: The distorted-wave second Born approximation (DWSBA) has been applied to the elastic scattering of electrons by ground-state atomic hydrogen and to the electron impact excitation of the 1s to 2s and 1s to 2p transitions in the energy range 30 to 680 eV. Differential and total cross sections are given as well as the polarisation fraction of the Lyman alpha radiation resulting from the radiative transition 2p to 1s. A new method of choosing the average energy in the closure approximation to the second Born amplitude is introduced for elastic scattering. The approximate methods of Dewangan and Walters (1977) and Winters (1979) for including distortion effects in the second Born term are investigated. It is found that both approximations are viable for elastic scattering at high enough energies but unreliable for inelastic scattering.

TL;DR: Glycopyrrolate appears to be five to six times more potent than atropine in its antisialogogue effect and also exhibits a selective, though prolonged, effect on salivary secretion and sweat gland activity.
Abstract: Atropine and glycopyrrolate (glycopyrronium bromide), a quaternary ammonium drug, were evaluated in volunteers following intramuscular administration with respect to effects on various end-organs with cholinergic innervation. Glycopyrrolate appears to be five to six times more potent than atropine in its antisialogogue effect and also exhibits a selective, though prolonged, effect on salivary secretion and sweat gland activity. It has minimal cardiovascular, ocular and central nervous system effects.

Abstract: The implosion of spherical-shell targets driven ablatively by six 1.05-..mu..m laser beams at an irradiance of approx.10/sup 13/ W cm/sup -2/ has been studied by streak time-resolved x-ray shadowgraphy. Measurements of acceleration determined the ablation pressure. Departures from one-dimensional simulations showed increasingly degraded implosions as the shell aspect ratio r/..delta..r was increased from 10 to 110 for shells with surface perturbations of +- 0.05 ..delta..r.

TL;DR: In this paper, Nitrogen fertilizer was applied at 0, 30,60 and 90 kg N ha-1 in March 1976, 1977 and 1978 to plots containing perennial ryegrass cv. Blanca, Sabeda, Olwen and S100 in four replicated blocks.
Abstract: Nitrogen fertilizer was applied at 0, 30,60 and 90 kg N ha-1 in March 1976, 1977 and 1978 to plots containing perennial ryegrass cv. Barlenna sown either alone or with white clover cv. Blanca, Sabeda, Olwen and S100 in four replicated blocks. Dry matter (DM) yield of all swards responded positively to N with the response being highest in the no-clover swards in two of the three years. Annual DM yields were lower in the no-clover than in the mixed swards at any given N level. The higher levels of N reduced DM yield in mixed swards at some harvests in midsummer. Swards of S100 were consistently among the lower yielding mixed swards, whereas the other three clover cultivars varied in their relative yields. There were no N x cultivar interactions for white clover yields; irrespective of cultivar, N application reduced annual white clover yield by similar amounts. It is concluded that it is beneficial to apply moderate amounts of N fertilizer to mixed swards in spring and that under these conditions the yield differences between swards including medium-large and smaller leaved white clover cultivars are similar to differences between the inherent yield potential of these cultivars in mixed swards receiving no N.
