Abstract: We present observations of ~7 deg^2 of the North American and Pelican Nebulae region at 24, 70, and 160 μm with the Spitzer Space Telescope Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS). We incorporate the MIPS observations with earlier Spitzer Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) observations, as well as archival near-infrared (IR) and optical data. We use the MIPS data to identify 1286 young stellar object (YSO) candidates. IRAC data alone can identify 806 more YSO candidates, for a total of 2076 YSO candidates. Prior to the Spitzer observations, there were only ~200 YSOs known in this region. Three subregions within the complex are highlighted as clusters: the Gulf of Mexico, the Pelican, and the Pelican's Hat. The Gulf of Mexico cluster is subject to the highest extinction (AV at least ~30) and has the widest range of infrared colors of the three clusters, including the largest excesses and by far the most point-source detections at 70 μm. Just 3% of the cluster members were previously identified; we have redefined this cluster as about 10-100 times larger (in projected area) than was previously realized.

Abstract: A phased array radar antenna uses time-steering subarray notch weightings to produce a wideband notch in the direction of interference for Electronic-Counter-Measure (ECM) interference suppression. A predetermined set of subarray notch weightings, each set being identical for each subarray, is stored in controllers each of which is coupled to a plurality of phase shifters and attenuators for feeding radiating elements of the antenna. Interference suppressors operate from a plurality of controllers to produce a subarray pattern having a notch in the direction of interference. Beamformers then combine outputs of all time-steering subarrays in the antenna so as to produce an antenna pattern having a wideband notch in the direction of interference.

Abstract: This paper presents a method for evaluating the ease-of-disassembly of products. Its primary use is in designing products for recycling, but it also facilitates consideration of servicing and maintenance, and making environmentally-related decisions. The method is developed and discussed in the context of relatively small products that can be disassembled by a seated person using hand-held tools. The evaluation procedure is centered around a spreadsheet-like chart and uses a catalog of task difficulty scores. The scores were derived from work-measurement analyses of standard disassembly tasks, and provide a means of identifying weaknesses in the design and comparing alternatives quantitatively. The structure of the evaluation chart and the derivation of difficulty scores are explained, followed by a demonstration of analyzing a computer central processing unit. The limitations of the method and future extensions are outlined.

Abstract: A water filter system for use in refrigerators having water dispenser and/or icemaker features. The filter system includes a commercially available filter cartridge which removes common water contaminants. A shut off valve temporarily stops the flow of water to the filter to permit replacement of the cartridge. The filter is disposed within the refrigerator for easy access and may be further disposed in a recess in one of the refrigerator walls or the refrigerator door to avoid reducing the useable food storage volume. The shut off valve may be closed by activating a conveniently located switch, by opening the refrigerator door, by opening a cover over the recess, or alternatively may be normally closed and opened only in response to activation of the icemaker or water dispenser features.

Abstract: This paper presents an analysis of a low-noise dielectric resonator GaAs FET oscillator in a frequency-locked loop (FLL), which is used for FM noise degeneration. In this circuit, one resonator serves both as the frequency-determining element of the oscillator and as the dispersive element of the discriminator. The results of the analysis are used to generate design guidelines. These guidelines were followed in an experimental realization of an X-band circuit. The measured FM noise was--120 and--142 dBc/Hz at 10- and 100-kHz offset frequencies, respectively, and corresponded closely to predicted results.
