TL;DR: In this paper, the authors demonstrate the importance of analyzing proposed modern control system designs with classical frequency response techniques and show how these problems can be solved so that modern control methods will be more useful to practical'control system designers.
Abstract: This paper demonstrates the importance of analyzing proposed modern control system designs with classical frequency response techniques. When classical constraints such as open-loop crossover frequency are ignored, apparently robust modern control designs may go unstable for relatively innocuous plant perturbations. Modern control system designs of successively more complex plants are analyzed to reveal some problems that may occur in the design of real systems and to show how these problems can be solved so that modern control methods will be more useful to practical'control system designers.

TL;DR: The Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) is a high resolution array Fourier transform spectrometer designed to measure infrared spectral radiances from low Earth orbit as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: We provide an overview of the nadir measurements of carbon monoxide (CO) obtained thus far by the Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) The instrument is a high resolution array Fourier transform spectrometer designed to measure infrared spectral radiances from low Earth orbit It is one of four instruments successfully launched onboard the Aura platform into a sun synchronous orbit at an altitude of 705 km on July 15, 2004 from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California Nadir spectra are recorded at 006/cm spectral resolution with a nadir footprint of 5 x 8 km We describe the TES retrieval approach for the analysis of the nadir measurements, report averaging kernels for typical tropical and polar ocean locations, characterize random and systematic errors for those locations, and describe instrument performance changes in the CO spectral region as a function of time Sample maps of retrieved CO for the middle and upper troposphere from global surveys during December 2005 and April 2006 highlight the potential of the results for measurement and tracking of global pollution and determining air quality from space

12 Aug 2003TL;DR: In this article, a ceramic material having particular utility as a thermal insulating or thermal barrier coating on metallic substrates is provided, which broadly comprises at least one oxide and the balance comprising a first oxide selected from the group consisting of zirconia, ceria, and hafnia.
Abstract: A ceramic material having particular utility as a thermal insulating or thermal barrier coating on metallic substrates is provided. The ceramic material broadly comprises at least one oxide and the balance comprising a first oxide selected from the group consisting of zirconia, ceria, and hafnia. The at least one oxide has a formula A 2 O 3 where A is selected from the group consisting of La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, In, Sc, Y, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, and mixtures thereof. The present invention also broadly relates to an article having a metal substrate and a thermal barrier coating as discussed above.

30 Dec 2005TL;DR: In this article, a programmable computing and display device for upgrading a cockpit instrument panel of an aircraft is described, which includes a plurality of processing units, a network backbone, and at least one display to display video graphics to a cockpit crew member.
Abstract: Disclosed is a programmable computing and display device (14) for upgrading a cockpit instrument panel (12) of an aircraft (8). The programmable computing and display device includes a plurality of processing units; a network backbone (50) that establishes a network among the processing units for the exchange of network data traffic; at least one display (16) to display video graphics to a cockpit crew member; and a modular assembly (17) that retains the processing units, the network backbone and the display.
