Abstract: Recent developments to the MICHELLE electron gun and collector design tool are reported in this paper. The MICHELLE code is a new finite-element (FE) two-dimensional and three-dimensional electrostatic particle-in-cell code that has been designed to address the recent beam optics modeling and simulation requirements for vacuum electron devices, ion sources, and charged-particle transport. Problem classes specifically targeted include depressed collectors, gridded-guns, multibeam guns, sheet-beam guns, and ion thrusters. The focus of the development program is to combine modern FE techniques with improved physics models. The code employs a conformal mesh, including both structured and unstructured mesh architectures for meshing flexibility, along with a new method for accurate, efficient particle tracking. New particle emission models for thermionic beam representation are included that support primary emission, with an advanced secondary emission model. This paper reports on three significant advances to MICHELLE over the past year; hybrid structured/unstructured mesh support, a time-domain electrostatic algorithm, and an ion plasma model with charge exchange.

Abstract: [1] We present global, vertical profile estimates of the HDO/H2O ratio from the Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) on the Earth Observing System (EOS) Aura satellite. We emphasize in this paper the estimation approach and error characterization, which are critical to determining the very small absolute concentration of HDO relative to H2O and its uncertainty. These estimates were made from TES nadir-viewing (downlooking) thermal infrared spectral radiances observed on 20 September 2004. Profiles of HDO and H2O are simultaneously estimated from the observed radiances and a profile of the ratio is then calculated. This simultaneous, or “joint,” estimate is regularized with an a priori covariance matrix that includes expected correlations between HDO and H2O. This approach minimizes errors in the profile of the HDO/H2O ratio that are due to overlapping HDO and H2O spectroscopic lines. Under clear-sky conditions in the tropics, TES estimates of the HDO/H2O ratio are sensitive to the distribution of the actual ratio between the surface and about 300 hPa with peak sensitivity at 700 hPa. The sensitivity decreases with latitude through its dependence on temperature and water amount. We estimate a precision of approximately 1% to 2% for the ratio of the HDO/H2O tropospheric densities; however, there is possibly a bias of approximately 5% in the ratio due to the HDO spectroscopic line strengths. These global observations clearly show increased isotopic depletion of water vapor at higher latitudes as well as increased depletion in the upper troposphere versus the lower troposphere.

Abstract: Using Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 observations in two ultraviolet (UV) filters (F225W and F336W) of the central region of the high-density Galactic globular cluster (GGC) M80, we have identified 305 blue straggler stars (BSS), which represents the largest and most concentrated population of BSS ever observed in a GGC. We also identify the largest clean sample of evolved BSS yet found. The high stellar density alone cannot explain the BSS, and we suggest that in M80 we are witnessing a transient dynamical state, during which stellar interactions are delaying the core-collapse process leading to an exceptionally large population of collisional BSS.

Abstract: A perishable integrity indicator system includes a RFID transponder and a perishable integrity sensor. The RFID transponder includes a RF integrated circuit coupled with an antenna. The sensor monitors the time and temperature of the perishable. A freshness determining module receives time- and temperature-dependent measurement data from the perishable integrity sensor and determines a current freshness status. A communications interface to the RFID transponder permits a RFID reader to retrieve current freshness status data corresponding to the freshness status determined by the freshness determining module. The system further includes a power management module.
