06 May 1999TL;DR: In this paper, an integrated directional patch antenna using multiple patch radiating elements to control the direction of a beam of radio frequency energy (RF) over a large scan volume was proposed.
Abstract: An integrated directional patch antenna uses multiple patch radiating elements to control the direction of a beam of radio frequency energy (RF) over a large scan volume. The antenna includes a ground plane element and a first dielectric planar member placed on a major surface of the ground plane element. A plurality of first patch radiator elements is arranged on a surface of the first dielectric member remote from the ground plane element. A second dielectric planar member is placed on first patch radiator elements, and a plurality of second patch radiator elements arranged on a surface of the second dielectric member remote from the first patch radiator elements. First regions are formed in the dielectric planar member that have a first dielectric constant and are separated from each other by second regions that have a dielectric constant different from the first dielectric constant to effectively prevent surface wave energy from propagating in the first dielectric planar member, thereby increasing the scan volume of the antenna.

TL;DR: The Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing signal coding and system architecture were implemented to achieve radar and data communication functionalities and shows good promise as a multifunctional software-defined sensor which can be used in radar sensor networks.
Abstract: Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) signal coding and system architecture were implemented to achieve radar and data communication functionalities. The resultant system is a software-defined unit, which can be used for range measurements, radar imaging, and data communications. Range reconstructions were performed for ranges up to 4 m using trihedral corner reflectors with approximately 203 m of radar cross section at the carrier frequency; range resolution of approximately 0.3 m was demonstrated. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image of a single corner reflector was obtained; SAR signal processing specific to OFDM signals is presented. Data communication tests were performed in radar setup, where the signal was reflected by the same target and decoded as communication data; bit error rate of was achieved at 57 Mb/s. The system shows good promise as a multifunctional software-defined sensor which can be used in radar sensor networks.

16 May 1995TL;DR: In this article, a photovoltaic (PV) power system having distributed square wave current DC to AC inverters integral with strings of PV cells in a PV array is arranged into four quadrants and phase-shifted and summed AC voltages from each quadrant are further summed in a 12-phase to 3-phase transformer to produce a sinusoidal 3phase AC voltage with a total harmonic distortion of less than 5 percent.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of extreme acceleration and change in acceleration, or jerk, on bacteria to determine if they could survive impact ejection from a planet was studied, and the authors concluded that acceleration and jerk are not important lethal factors during the ejection of viable microorganisms from planetary surfaces.

06 Feb 1997TL;DR: In this paper, a plurality of sensor units are distributed over an area and communicate via a network with a central monitoring unit, where sensor arrays include sensor arrays that provide them with raw data in response to the presence of selected compounds in the ambient fluid.
Abstract: A plurality of sensor units are distributed over an area and communicate via a network with a central monitoring unit. The sensor units include sensor arrays that provide them with raw data in response to the presence of selected compounds in the ambient fluid. The raw sensor data is then processed to compute a local profile, which (a) illustrates a change in the compounds in the fluid from their normal state (change detection) , (b) indicates the presence and total concentration of foreign compounds in the fluid (presence detection), or (c) details the composition and concentrations of defined classes or individual species of compounds in the fluid (composition detection). The local profiles from the individual sensor units are then used to compute a spatial and temporal map for the compounds in the fluid. This map can then be used for a variety of purposes including tracking and predicting the flow of compounds through the area, identifying the source of compounds in the area, monitoring abatement, and controlling industrial processes.
