Abstract: We report a simple method that uses proteins to solubilize single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in water. Characterization by a variety of complementary techniques including UV−Vis spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy confirmed the dispersion at the individual nanotube level. A variety of proteins differing in size and structure were used to generate individual nanotube solutions by this noncovalent functionalization procedure. Protein-mediated solubilization of nanotubes in water may be important for biomedical applications. This method of solubilization may also find use in approaches for controlling the assembly of nanostructures, and the wide variety of functional groups present on the adsorbed proteins may be used as orthogonal reactive handles for the functionalization of carbon nanotubes.

Abstract: Here we present a flexible strategy to realize robust nanomaterials exhibiting valence electronic structures whose fundamental physics is described by the SSH-Hamiltonian. These solid-state materials are realized using atomically precise graphene nanoribbons (GNR). We demonstrate the controlled periodic coupling of topological boundary states at junctions of armchair GNRs of different widths to create quasi-1D trivial and non-trivial electronic quantum phases. Their topological class is experimentally determined by drawing upon the bulk-boundary correspondence and measuring the presence (non-trivial) or absence (trivial) of localized end states by scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). The strategy we propose has the potential to tune the band width of the topological electronic bands close to the energy scale of proximity induced spin-orbit coupling or superconductivity, and may allow the realization of Kitaev like Hamiltonians and Majorana type end states.

Abstract: The ambitious goal of this work is to develop a cross-lingual name tagging and linking framework for 282 languages that exist in Wikipedia. Given a document in any of these languages, our framework is able to identify name mentions, assign a coarse-grained or fine-grained type to each mention, and link it to an English Knowledge Base (KB) if it is linkable. We achieve this goal by performing a series of new KB mining methods: generating “silver-standard” annotations by transferring annotations from English to other languages through cross-lingual links and KB properties, refining annotations through self-training and topic selection, deriving language-specific morphology features from anchor links, and mining word translation pairs from cross-lingual links. Both name tagging and linking results for 282 languages are promising on Wikipedia data and on-Wikipedia data.

Abstract: Photopolymers broadly comprise monomers, oligomers, polymers, or mixtures of the aforementioned materials that upon exposure to light undergo photochemical reactions that result in deep-seated changes in their structures which substantially modify their chemical and mechanical properties. Photopolymers may possess chromophores that provide for their intrinsic photosensitivity. Alternatively, other photosensitive molecules may be added that directly or indirectly interact with the photopolymer upon exposure to light to produce the desired property changes. Examples of various types of photopolymers will be presented in this article along with examples of their use in representative applications.
