Abstract: Elastic response of selected plane-array models of graded composite microstructures is examined under both uniform and linearly varying boundary tractions and displacements, by means of detailed finite element studies of large domains containing up to several thousand inclusions. Models consisting of piecewise homogeneous layers with equivalent elastic properties estimated by Mori-Tanaka and selfconsistent methods are also analysed under similar boundary conditions. Comparisons of the overall and local fields predicted by the discrete and homogenized models are made using a C/SiC composite system with very different Young's moduli of the phases, and relatively steep composition gradients. The conclusions reached from these comparisons suggest that in those parts of the graded microstructure which have a well-defined continuous matrix and discontinuous second phase, the overall properties and local fields are predicted by Mori-Tanaka estimates. On the other hand, the response of graded materials with a skeletal microstructure in a wide transition zone between clearly defined matrix phases is better approximated by the self-consistent estimates. Certain exceptions are noted for loading by overall transverse shear stress. The results suggest that the averaging methods originally developed for statistically homogeneous aggregates may be selectively applied, with a reasonable degree of confidence, to aggregates with composition gradients, subjected to both uniform and nonuniform overall loads.

Abstract: Polymer properties, such as their mechanical strength, barrier properties, and dielectric response, can be dramatically improved by the addition of nanoparticles. This improvement is thought to be because the surface area per unit mass of particles increases with decreasing particle size, R, as 1/R. This favorable effect has to be reconciled with the expectation that at small enough R the nanoparticles must behave akin to a solvent and cause a deterioration of properties. How does this transition in behavior from large solutes to the solvent limit occur? We conjecture that for small enough particles the layer of polymer affected by the particles (“bound” polymer layer) must be much smaller than that for large particles: the favorable effect of increasing particle surface area can thus be overcome and lead to the small solvent limit with unfavorable mechanical properties, for example. Abstract: Five types of representations for assembly sequences are reviewed: the directed graph of feasible assembly sequences; the AND/OR graph of feasible assembly sequences; the set of establishment conditions, and two types of precedence relationships namely those between the establishment of one connection between parts and the establishment of another connection, and those between the establishment of one connection and states of the assembly process. The mappings of one representation into the others are established. The correctness and completeness of these representations are established. The results presented are needed in the proof of correctness and completeness of algorithms for the generation of mechanical assembly sequences. >
