Abstract: Low-pressure adsorption isotherms of argon and nitrogen at 77.8°K. and 90.1°K. on graphitized carbon black, P-33, are reported. It is found that the adsorbed monolayer behaves like a two-dimensional ideal gas at the lowest pressures measured; and that its behavior at slightly higher pressures can be described by a two-dimensional van der Waals equation. The critical temperature of the adsorbed monolayer is estimated from the van der Waals constants. Above about 50% coverage the adsorption isotherm has the form of the Langmuir equation; which is interpreted as the adsorption of a mobile film on localized sites, where the sites are superposed on the low-energy solid substrate by the packing of the adsorbate. The isosteric heats of adsorption are calculated as a function of the fraction of the surface covered, and are found to follow the same general pattern as that reported by Amberg, Spencer, and Beebe (4) for krypton adsorbed on an identical substrate.

Abstract: The majority of work in graphene nanocomposites has focused on polymer matrices. Here we report for the first time the use of graphene to enhance the toughness of bulk silicon nitride ceramics. Ceramics are ideally suited for high-temperature applications but suffer from poor toughness. Our approach uses graphene platelets (GPL) that are homogeneously dispersed with silicon nitride particles and densified, at ∼1650 °C, using spark plasma sintering. The sintering parameters are selected to enable the GPL to survive the harsh processing environment, as confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. We find that the ceramic's fracture toughness increases by up to ∼235% (from ∼2.8 to ∼6.6 MPa·m(1/2)) at ∼1.5% GPL volume fraction. Most interestingly, novel toughening mechanisms were observed that show GPL wrapping and anchoring themselves around individual ceramic grains to resist sheet pullout. The resulting cage-like graphene structures that encapsulate the individual grains were observed to deflect propagating cracks in not just two but three dimensions.

Abstract: Recently, certain lots of heparin have been associated with an acute, rapid onset of serious side effects indicative of an allergic-type reaction. To identify potential causes for this sudden rise in side effects, we examined lots of heparin that correlated with adverse events using orthogonal high-resolution analytical techniques. Through detailed structural analysis, the contaminant was found to contain a disaccharide repeat unit of glucuronic acid linked β1→3 to a β-N-acetylgalactosamine. The disaccharide unit has an unusual sulfation pattern and is sulfated at the 2-O and 3-O positions of the glucuronic acid as well as at the 4-O and 6-O positions of the galactosamine. Given the nature of this contaminant, traditional screening tests cannot differentiate between affected and unaffected lots. Our analysis suggests effective screening methods that can be used to determine whether or not heparin lots contain the contaminant reported here.

Abstract: Titanium is one of many trace elements to substitute for silicon in the mineral quartz. Here, we describe the temperature dependence of that substitution, in the form of a new geothermometer. To calibrate the “TitaniQ” thermometer, we synthesized quartz in the presence of rutile and either aqueous fluid or hydrous silicate melt, at temperatures ranging from 600 to 1,000°C, at 1.0 GPa. The Ti contents of quartz (in ppm by weight) from 13 experiments increase exponentially with reciprocal T as described by: $$ {\text{Log}}{\left( {X^{{{\text{qtz}}}}_{{{\text{Ti}}}} } \right)} = (5.69 \pm 0.02) - \frac{{(3765 \pm 24)}} {{T(K)}}. $$ Application of this thermometer is straightforward, typically requiring analysis of only one phase (quartz). This can be accomplished either by EPMA for crystallization temperatures above 600°C, or by SIMS for temperatures down to at least 400°. Resulting temperature estimates are very precise (usually better than ±5°C), potentially allowing detailed characterization of thermal histories within individual quartz grains. Although calibrated for quartz crystallized in the presence of rutile, the thermometer can also be applied to rutile-absent systems if TiO2 activity is constrained.
