Abstract: Single-layer black phosphorus (BP), or phosphorene, is a highly anisotropic two-dimensional elemental material possessing promising semiconductor properties for flexible electronics. However, the direct bandgap of single-layer black phosphorus predicted theoretically has not been directly measured, and the properties of its edges have not been considered in detail. Here we report atomic scale electronic variation related to strain-induced anisotropic deformation of the puckered honeycomb structure of freshly cleaved black phosphorus using a high-resolution scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) survey along the light (x) and heavy (y) effective mass directions. Through a combination of STS measurements and first-principles calculations, a model for edge reconstruction is also determined. The reconstruction is shown to self-passivate most dangling bonds by switching the coordination number of phosphorus from 3 to 5 or 3 to 4.

Abstract: The role, including concentration, conformation, and bioactivity, of adsorbed vitronectin in enhancing osteoblast adhesion on nanophase alumina was investigated in the present study. Vitronectin adsorbed in a competitive environment in the highest concentration on nanophase alumina compared to conventional alumina. Enhanced adsorption of vitronectin on nanophase alumina was possibly due to decreased adsorption of apolipoprotein A-I and/or increased adsorption of calcium on nanophase alumina. In a novel manner, the present study utilized surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) to determine the conformation of vitronectin adsorbed on nanophase alumina. These results provided the first evidence of increased unfolding of vitronectin adsorbed on nanophase alumina. Increased adsorption of calcium on nanophase alumina may affect the conformation of adsorbed vitronectin specifically to promote unfolding of the macromolecule to expose cell-adhesive epitopes recognized by specific cell-membrane receptors. Abstract: We announce the discovery of a new satellite of the Milky Way in the constellation of Bootes at a distance of ~60 kpc. It was found in a systematic search for stellar overdensities in the north Galactic cap using Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5. The color-magnitude diagram shows a well-defined turnoff, red giant branch, and extended horizontal branch. Its absolute magnitude is MV ~ -5.8 mag, which makes it one of the faintest galaxies known. The half-light radius is ~220 pc. The isodensity contours are elongated and have an irregular shape, suggesting that Boo may be a disrupted dwarf spheroidal galaxy.

Abstract: A new method is proposed for evaluation of local fields and overall properties of composite materials subjected to incremental thermomechanical loads and to transformation strains in the phases. The composite aggregate may consist of many perfectly bonded inelastic phases of arbitrary geometry and elastic material symmetry. In principle, any inviscid or time-dependent inelastic constitutive relation that complies with the additive decomposition of total strains can be admitted in the analysis. The governing system of equations is derived from the representation of local stress and strain fields by novel transformation influence functions and concentration factor tensors, as discussed in the preceding paper by G. J. Dvorak and Y. Benveniste. The concentration factors depend on local and overall thermoelastic moduli, and can be evaluated with a selected micromechanical model. Applications to elastic-plastic, viscoelastic, and viscoplastic systems are discussed. The new approach is contrasted with some presently accepted procedures based on the self-consistent and Mori-Tanaka approximations, which are shown to violate exact relations between local and overall inelastic strains.
