TL;DR: The medial rugae appear to be suitable anatomic points for the construction of stable reference planes for longitudinal cast analysis in palatal rugae casts of patients enrolled in a study of early Class II treatment.
Abstract: The aims of this study were to determine if the palatal rugae are stable during normal growth, and whether treatment with either headgear or functional appliances affects the position of the rugae. Initial and 15-month recall dental casts of 94 patients enrolled in a study of early Class II treatment were evaluated. The children had been randomly assigned to one of three groups: control (n = 34), headgear (n = 30), and functional appliance (n = 30). Landmarks on the palatal raphe and palatal rugae were recorded using the Reflex Metrograph. A median palatal plane was constructed using the digitized raphe points as reference. Offsets from this plane to the ruga points and transverse and anteroposterior linear distances between ruga points were obtained for all casts. Transverse offsets and linear distances between medial points of the first rugae and the anteroposterior distances between the medial points of the second and third rugae did not show statistically significant changes in all groups. Significant changes were observed for the lateral points of the rugae, particularly in the headgear group. The medial rugae appear to be suitable anatomic points for the construction of stable reference planes for longitudinal cast analysis.

TL;DR: Results of research undertaken in the US (especially in New York City) are compared with those of a recent investigation carried out in the city of S.Paulo, Brazil, finding that geographical patterns of socio-demographic variables correlate with different patterns of the spread of the AIDS epidemic through the transmission groups.
Abstract: The first of a series of papers concerning the evaluation of the dynamics of the AIDS epidemic in Brazil employing techniques of geographical analysis, is here presented. Results of research undertaken in the US (especially in New York City) are compared with those of a recent investigation carried out in the city of S.Paulo, Brazil (Grangeiro, 1994). In both, geographical patterns of socio-demographic variables correlate with different patterns of the spread of the AIDS epidemic through the transmission groups. Recent trends of the AIDS epidemic in Brazil: the displacement toward medium sized cities and expansion frontiers, increasing report of AIDS cases among the poor and underprivileged, changes in the pattern of transmission with proportional augmentation of heterosexual transmission and IDUs as transmission groups, are described and analised. The geographical distribution of the AIDS cases registered between 1987-1993 in Brazil throughout the Brazilian States is evaluated by means of worksheets, maps, and non-parametric statistics. Results show that Gravimetric Centers (obtained by the use of the calculus spatial means) of AIDS in Brazil are situated within a triangle the sides of which are formed lines joining the three main metropolitan areas of the wealthiest region of Brazil - the southeast, i.e. Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte. These especially S. Paulo, function as points of attraction for these Gravimetric Centers (GCs) towards the south as compared with the GCs of the general population calculated ia accordance with data from the 1980 and 1991 censuses. It is possible to observe a displacement of the GCs toward the northwest over this period in accordance with the migration patterns of the Brazilian population in general, though with a dynamic of its own. These changes in the geographical, socio-demographic and transmission group patterns show the complex nature of the epidemic in Brazil and pose additional difficulties for the development of prevention strategies.

TL;DR: The structure of the Ribeira belt is defined by three large thrust sheets (Lower, Intermediate and Upper) which override the autochthonous domain, towards the southern portion of the Sao Francisco Craton as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The structure of the central segment of the Ribeira belt is defined by three large thrust sheets (Lower, Intermediate and Upper) which override the autochthonous domain, towards the southern portion of the Sao Francisco Craton. Four lithotectonic associations are individualized within the domains: basement rocks (pre-1,8 Ga rocks); orthogneisses of unknown age; Post-1,8 Ga metasedimentary cover and Brasiliano granitoid rocks. Continental tholeiitic deformed dykes and disrupted lenses within the cover indicate extensional periods. Investigation of the tectono-metamorphic and magmatic aspects, associated with new U/Pb geocronological data support the subdivision of Brasiliano Orogeny within three main tectonic periods: a) the syn-collisional period (590-563 Ma) is represented by the main deformation (D 1+2 ), coeval with the M 1 metamorphic stage and γl -γ3 granitoid rocks. Crustal shortening took place initially through ductile thrusts and tight recumbent folds. The late stage of this collisional event is characterized by oblique convergence, with pervasive deformation throughout the belt. M 1 had its thermal peak during D 2 , and is characterised by intermediate to high pressures. The spatial distribution of the metamorphic zones defines an inverted gradient. Deformed I and S type granitoid rocks occur during this period, b) the post-collisional period (535-520 Ma) is characterized by D 3 deformation, coeval with M 2 metamorphic stage. During D 3 phase, the oblique convergence continued, but was accomodated by late to post-metamorphic peak strike slip ductile shear zones. Between these shear zones, shortening was achieved by steep folding of S 2 foliation. The Ma stage with lower pressure regime is associated with intense melting of the basement and the cover, resulting in the generation of I-type magmatism and subordinated S-type; and c) the post-tectonic period is represented by the Post-D4 γ 5 magmatism registered between 503 to 492 Ma. This magmatism may be related to melting of crustal rocks associated with mantelic contribution related with high temperature conditions and uplift just after the Brasiliano Orogeny

TL;DR: The authors suggest that the varicose condition is associated with a connective tissue uniform accumulation among muscle cells in the circular muscle layer.
Abstract: Varicose veins alternate areas of phlebosclerosis and hypertrophy of the vein wall. In this study, samples of long saphenous veins obtained from patients submitted for aortocoronary saphenous vein graft or for surgical resection of varicose saphenous veins were examined. Histologic changes in the intima, muscle, and adventitial layers were quantified. Thicknesses of the venous wall layers were obtained by linear measurements, and the volumetric density of the connective tissue in the muscle layer was determined by point counting. The muscle layer thickness was 300 +/- 13 and 581 +/- 25 microns in normal and varicose veins, respectively. A more severe connective tissue accumulation within the muscle bundles was found in the varicose condition. The volumetric density of the connective tissue in the circular muscle layer (CmC/MmC) showed also a marked difference between varicose (0.67 +/- 0.08) and normal veins (0.43 +/- 0.02), P < 0.05. The authors suggest that the varicose condition is associated with a connective tissue uniform accumulation among muscle cells in the circular muscle layer.

TL;DR: Identifying patients at risk, specific syndromes and prognostic factors may help to reduce the high mortality associated with disseminated fungal infections in neutropenic patients.
Abstract: In this paper we report a eight-year prospective study designed to further characterize incidence, epidemiology, specific syndromes, treatment and prognosis associated with fungal infections in neutropenic patients. During the study period 30 fungal infections were diagnosed in 30 patients among 313 episodes of fever and neutropenia (10%). There were 15 cases of candidiasis, 5 pulmonary aspergillosis, 3 sinusitis by Aspergillus fumigatus, 5 infections by Fusarium sp., one infection by Trichosporon sp., and one infection due to Rhodotorula rubra. Blood cultures were positive in 18 cases (60%). The predisposing factors for fungal infection in multivariate analysis were the presence of central venous catheter (p<0.001), longer duration of profound (<100/mm3) neutropenia (p<0.001), the use of corticosteroids (p<0.001), gram-positive bacteremia (p=0.002) and younger age (p=0.03). In multivariate analysis only recovery of the neutropenia (p<0.001) was associated with good prognosis whereas the diagnosis of infection by Fusarium sp. (p=0.006) was strongly associated with a poor outcome. The death rate was 43%. There was no statistically significant difference in the death rate between patients who did receive (52%) or did not receive (50%) antifungal treatment. Identifying patients at risk, specific syndromes and prognostic factors may help to reduce the high mortality associated with disseminated fungal infections in neutropenic patients.

TL;DR: It appears that long-term shortening of the condylar process is not a highly prevalent problem, but changes of 2 to 4 mm in condylion-pogonion associated with modest clinical relapse may occur beyond 1 year postsurgery in 5 to 10% of these two-jaw surgery patients.
Abstract: Changes in cephalometric landmark positions and relationships were evaluated more than 5 years postsurgically in 26 patients whose long-face condition had been treated with a combination of superior repositioning of the maxilla and mandibular advancement All the patients had a least 2-mm surgical intrusion of the maxilla and 2-mm lengthening of the mandible with wire osteosynthesis, maxillomandibular fixation, and skeletal suspension wires On the average, a small amount of downward and backward rotation of the mandible occurred long term The mean change in overjet was less than 1 mm Most of the changes occurred in a minority of the patients: 20% of the group had 2 to 4-mm downward movement of menton, and the mandibular plane angle increased more than 2 degrees in 25% of the patients On clinical evaluation, a tendency toward opening of the bite beyond 1 year postsurgery was noted in 5 of the 26 patients (19%), and one patient had a greater than 4-mm decrease in overbite The condylion-pogonion distance decreased 2 to 4 mm in three patients, two of whom had shown greater than 4-mm shortening of this distance during the first postsurgical year It appears that long-term shortening of the condylar process is not a highly prevalent problem, but changes of 2 to 4 mm in condylion-pogonion associated with modest clinical relapse may occur beyond 1 year postsurgery in 5 to 10% of these two-jaw surgery patients

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that these modes enhance the runaway production rate via their Cherenkov dissipation, and it is found as a general feature that its enhancement is the larger the weaker the background electric field, while for its absolute enhancement it is just the opposite.
Abstract: It has been studied the quantitative modification of the electron runaway flux due to a spectrum of kinetic Alfven waves (kAw), using the quasilinear (waves) and Fokker-Planck (collisions) equations. It is shown that these modes enhance the runaway production rate via their Cherenkov dissipation. The runaway flux for narrow and broad band spectrum for low and high phase velocities is calculated, and it is found as a general feature that its enhancement is the larger the weaker the background electric field, while for its absolute enhancement it is just the opposite. In some cases, the runaway production rate is found to be enhanced by many orders of magnitude over that without kinetic Alfven waves. It has also been discussed the consequences of this study for cosmic plasmas, namely: amplification of nonthermal emissions from stellar atmospheres, and planetary magnetospheres, (radio frequency waves, and x-ray), life extension of stellar radio bursts, enhancement of Langmuir turbulence, depletion of thermal population in extragalactic jets, and enhancement of auroral electrons precipitation.

TL;DR: The introduction of high-resolution methods (CT scan and RM) and techniques for ultrasound examination have greatly simplified the clinical investigation of female precocious puberty.
Abstract: This paper reviews the clinical findings, pituitary gonadotrophin reserve, plasma estradiol and androgens, radiological findings and pelvic ultrasound appearance in 17 girls with true precocious puberty (PP), and attempts to asses the value of these tests diagnosis in the clinical management of such patients and better understanding of the pathogenesis of this disorder. As noted in other series, acceleration of growth is one of the earliest features of PP and at the time of diagnosis bone age can be already significantly advanced. In 3 (18%) patients intracranial abnormalities were present. Ultrasound examination showed changes similar to those seen during normal puberty. To conclude, the introduction of high-resolution methods (CT scan and RM) and techniques for ultrasound examination have greatly simplified the clinical investigation of female precocious puberty.

TL;DR: It can be concluded that the morphology of adult worms may be used to distinguish S. mansoni strains and that morphological changes in adult worms are not induced by successive inoculations of a strain in mice.
Abstract: The morphology of Schistosoma mansoni adult male worms from three strains which have been maintained in albino mice for several generations, was compared to a strain that has been isolated from the natural host Nectomys squamipes (Rodentia: Muridae) captured in Sumidouro (Rio de Janeiro State) and have been maintained in the same sylvatic rodent under laboratory conditions. Total length of specimens, distance between suckers, the number of testes and extention of testes grouping were the taxonomic characters analysed. The worms recovered from N. squamipes showed expressive differences (p< 0.01) compared to the other strains regarding the considered morphological characters. The strains that were maintained in mice presented statistical differences (p< 0.01) in several characters. Some adult worms besides the normal position of the testes also showed an atypical arrangement of these glands. It can be concluded that the morphology of adult worms may be used to distinguish S. mansoni strains and that morphological changes in adult worms are not induced by successive inoculations of a strain in mice.

TL;DR: It is concluded that left ventricular structural changes can occur early after initial abnormalities of blood pressure and body surface area and systolic pressure were the best predictors ofleft ventricular alterations in adolescents.
Abstract: To evaluate left ventricular structural changes and their relationship to blood pressure and anthropometric indexes, we examined by echocardiography 108 adolescents aged 13 to 19 years. Subjects were divided into three groups according to blood pressure tracking during three moments of observation: group 1 (n=27), ≥95th percentile; group 2 (n=37), ≤50th percentile; and group 3 (n=44), blood pressure not stable in the original percentile. Left ventricular mass index and the prevalence of altered left ventricular geometry were greater in group 1 ( P P P P P P P P P >.05). We conclude that left ventricular structural changes can occur early after initial abnormalities of blood pressure. Considering that body surface area and systolic pressure were the best predictors of left ventricular alterations in adolescents, the usual way of correcting left ventricular mass by body surface area should be reviewed.

Abstract: Two serological surveys for Chagas' infection were carried out, in 1991 and 1993, respectively, using a conglomerate family samples from the residents in the town of Barcelos (in the northern part of the State of Amazonas, on the right bank of the Rio Negro, 490 Km up-river from Manaus), using indirect immunofluorescent tests for anti-T. cruzi antibodies. In the first survey (1991), 628 blood samples from the residents of 142 dwellings were tested, showing positive in 12.7% for anti-T. cruzi antibodies and in 1993 an other 658 samples from residents of 171 dwellings showed positive in 13.7% of the tests, thus confirming the previous results. From 170 individuals with positive serology for T. cruzi antibodies, 112 (66%) were interviewed and submitted to electrocardiographic and clinical examinations; 82 (73.2%) of them gave consent for xenodiagnosis. From the 112 interviewed 52 (46.4%) recognized the triatomines as "piacavas' lice", 48 (42.8%) knew the bugs from their work places being gatherers of piacava fibers in rural areas and 19 (16.9%) said that have been bitten by bugs in their huts. Only 2 (2.4%) of 82 xenodiagnosis applied were positive for T. cruzi and 9 (8%) of the ECG had alterations compatible with Chagas' disease.

TL;DR: The theoretical kidney volume was calculated using the IW and the arithmetic mean between SW and IW was well correlated with the real kidney volume and there was no statistically significant difference between right and left kidneys.
Abstract: In order to present equations and normal growth curves of the theoretical kidney volume we studied 290 kidneys taken from 145 fresh human fetuses ranging in age from 13 to 36 weeks post-conception (WPC). The kidneys were evaluated in terms of greatest longitudinal length (L) superior pole width (SW), inferior pole width (IW), thickness (T) and real volume (RV). The theoretical kidney volume was calculated (ellipsoid formula: volume = length × width × thickness × 0.5236) by using SW, IW and the arithmetic mean between SW and IW. The assessment of the theoretical volume by using IW was well correlated with the real kidney volume. We found no statistically significant difference between right and left kidneys. During the second trimester (13 to 24 WPC) there was no difference in kidney volume between male and female fetuses. In the third trimester (25 to 36 WPC) male fetuses presented kidney volumes significantly greater than female fetuses. To evaluate the theoretical kidney volume in fetuses, one may use the IW, which is a quickly and easily obtained measurement. During the second trimester one may monitor the fetal kidney using equations and growth curves without taking the fetal sex into account. During the third trimester the fetal kidney volume must be evaluated using specific curves for male and female fetuses.

TL;DR: The results demonstrate that oral administration of S 5682 for 25 days at 20mg/kg body weight/day has a protective effect on leakage of macromolecules after application of permeability-increasing substances and during ischemia-reperfusion in the cheek pouch microvasculature of diabetic hamsters.
Abstract: The effects of a clinically used purified micronized flavonoid fraction (S5682) containing 90% diosmin and 10% hesperidin on increased microvascular permeability induced by histamine, bradykinin and leukotriene B4 (LTB4) were investigated by intravital microscopy in the cheek pouch preparation of diabetic hamsters. We also investigated the effects of S 5682 on macro- molecular permeability increase and leukocyte adhesion during ischemia-reperfusion using the same preparation. Diabetes was induced by an intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (50 mg/kg). S 5682, suspended in 10% lactose solution, or vehicle (10% lactose) was administered orally for 25 days at 20 mg/kg/day (10 mg/kg twice a day), starting 5 days after the streptozotocin injection. Fluorescein isothiocyanate-labelled dextran (molecular weight 150,000) was given intravenously, 30 min after completion of the cheek pouch preparation. The leukocytes were stained by continuous intravenous infusion of acridine orange (0.5 mg/ kg/min). Histamine (2 microMs), bradykinin (1 microM), and LTB4 (0.01 microM), applied topically for 5 min, increased the number of fluorescent vascular leakage sites in postcapillary venules. A temporary ischemia (duration: 30 min) with total circulatory arrest of the cheek pouch was obtained by clamping the neck of the everted pouch. The maximum number of leaky sites (per cm2 in the prepared area) which occurs either at 5 min after the beginning of each topical application or 10 min after the onset of reperfusion was quantified in UV light microscopy. The results from 60 animals divided into ten groups of 6 animals each are presented as means +/- SEM. In comparison with vehicle, S 5682 significantly inhibited the macromolecular permeability increasing the effect of histamine (343.8 +/- 18.5 vs. 91.0 +/- 8.2 leaks/ cm2; p > 0.001), bradykinin (347.0 +/- 14.6 vs. 110.3 +/- 8.5 leaks/cm2; p 0.05). These results demonstrate that oral administration of S 5682 for 25 days at 20mg/kg body weight/day has a protective effect on leakage of macromolecules after application of permeability-increasing substances and during ischemia-reperfusion in the cheek pouch microvasculature of diabetic hamsters. In conclusion, the present data illustrating the inhibitory effect of a clinically relevant doses of S 5682 on the inflammatory processes induced in this in vivo model of microcirculation may serve as a rational basis to explain its clinical efficacy.

TL;DR: The results support the conclusion that the presence of Chr 6 in Rb translocations specifically affects segregant and sex ratio distributions and indicate, that as the common arm in compound heterozygotes, this chromosome grossly affects spermatogenesis.
Abstract: Previously it has been shown that male mice heterozygous for the Rb(6.16) translocation show a transmission distortion of the segregants in resulting zygotes, particularly for sexually active animals (Aranha and Martin-DeLeon, 1991). Sperm bearing the translocation have an impaired fertilizing ability, compared to chromosomally normal sperm, and this dysfunction is potentiated in X-bearing cells leading to a sex ratio distortion. Since earlier data suggested that a deficiency of Chromosome 6 was associated with sperm dysfunction (Zackowski and Martin-DeLeon, 1989), the present study was designed to determine the uniqueness of the coupling of the distortions for the Rb(6.16) translocation and the effect of 0 and 2 copies of Chr 6 on sperm function. First cleavage metaphases, resulting from chromosomally normal females that were mated to sexually active or rested Rb(6.15) or Rb(2.8) heterozygous males, were sequentially G- and C-banded. For unaged sperm from sexually active Rb(6.15) males, cytogenetic analysis showed that the ratio of normal (90) to balanced (37) zygotes deviated significantly (P 0.05). There was also no sex ratio distortion for either unaged or aged sperm (P > 0.05). To generate zygotes with sperm complements containing 0 and 2 copies of Chr 6, males doubly heterozygous for Rb(6.16) and Rb(6.15) were mated to chromosomally normal females. No zygotes were recovered and the males were shown histologically to have azoospermia and spermatogenic arrest. The results support the conclusion that the presence of Chr 6 in Rb translocations specifically affects segregant and sex ratio distributions. They also indicate, that as the common arm in compound heterozygotes, this chromosome grossly affects spermatogenesis.

TL;DR: It is determined if cyclophosphamide, an alkylating agent, used in oncology as a chemotherapeutic drug, modifies the binding of 99mTcO-4 and 99MTc-MDP to blood cells and to plasma proteins and if this modified the effective half-life of these radiopharmaceuticals.
Abstract: Since the introduction of technetium-99m (99mTc) and its rapid acceptance as a tool in nuclear medicine, very little information is available about its biological action as 99mTc-radiopharmaceuticals. We have determined if cyclophosphamide, an alkylating agent, used in oncology as a chemotherapeutic drug, modifies the binding of 99mTcO-4 and 99mTc-MDP (99mTc-methylenediphosphonic acid) to blood cells and to plasma proteins. The radiopharmaceuticals were injected intravenously (iv) into SW-55 mice (male and female, weight 25 g) and samples of plasma and blood cells were separated. Cyclophosphamide (50 micrograms) was injected iv 1 h before the radiopharmaceuticals. Samples of plasma and blood cells were also precipitated with 5% trichloroacetic acid and soluble and insoluble fractions were isolated. The following results were obtained: 1) cyclophosphamide did not alter (0.25 to 8 h) percent radioactivity of 99mTcO-4 in plasma or blood cells but increased the binding of 99mTc-MDP to blood cells; 2) cyclophosphamide did not alter (0.25 to 8 h) the binding of 99mTcO-4 in insoluble fraction of plasma and decreased (1 to 4 h) percent radioactivity of 99mTc-MDP in the insoluble fraction of plasma; 3) cyclophosphamide increased (0.25 to 4 h) percent radioactivity of 99mTcO-4 in the insoluble fraction of blood cells but did not alter the binding of 99mTc-MDP. Cyclophosphamide and/or its metabolites modified the effective half-life of these radiopharmaceuticals (to 99mTcO-4 was increased 2.3 to 3.4 h and to 99mTc-MDP was decreased 3.3 to 2.1 h) and possibly increased the permeability of blood cells to 99mTcO-4.

Abstract: The growth of males and females of the tropidurid lizard Liolaemus lutzae was studied in the seasonal tropical habitat of the restinga da Barra de Marica, Rio de Janeiro State, southeastern Brazil. Growth rates of lizards decreased with size in both sexes; the size specific growth rates of females were significantly lower than those of males. Adult males were larger than adult females. The data indicate that despite maturing at a larger size, males grow faster than females and mature at similar ages. There was a significant relationship between amount of rainfall and lizard growth rate in both sexes.

For the {ital W}{r_arrow}{ital e}{nu} channel with a minimum jet {ital E}{sub {ital T}} cutoff of 25 GeV, the experimental ratio is 0.065{plus_minus}0.003(stat){plus_minus}0.007(syst). Next-to-leading order QCD predictions for various parton distributions agree well with each other and are all over 1 standard deviation below the measurement. Varying the strong coupling constant {alpha}{sub {ital s}} in both the parton distributions and the partonic cross sections simultaneously does not remove this discrepancy. {copyright} {ital 1995} {ital The} {ital American} {ital Physical} {ital Society}.

TL;DR: In this paper, a sample of Z0→τ+τ− events observed in the DELPHI detector at LEP in 1991 and 1992 is analysed to measure the τ polarisation in the exclusive decay channels evvˉ, μvvˉ, πν, ρν and a1ν.
Abstract: A sample of Z0→τ+τ− events observed in the DELPHI detector at LEP in 1991 and 1992 is analysed to measure the τ polarisation in the exclusive decay channels evvˉ , μvvˉ , πν, ρν and a1ν. The τ polarisation is also measured with an inclusive hadronic analysis which benefits from a higher efficiency and a better systematic precision than the use of the exclusive decay modes. The results have been combined with those published on the 1990 data. A measurement of the τ polarisation as a function of production angle yields the values for the mean τ polarisation 〈P〉τ=−0.148±0.022 and for the Z0 polarisationP Z=−0.136±0.027. These results are used to determine the ratio of vector to axial-vector effective couplings for taus vˉτ/aˉτ=0.074±0.011 , and for electrons vˉe/aˉe=0.068±0.014 , compatible with e-τ universality. With the assumption of lepton universality, the ratio of vector to axial-vector effective couplings for leptons vˉl/aˉl=0.072±0.008 is obtained, implying a value of the effective weak mixing angle sin2θ eff lept =0.2320±0.0021.183-201
