Abstract: The phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase (PI3K) family of signaling enzymes plays a crucial role in leukocyte recruitment and activation and hence, likely regulates the induction and propagation phases of inflammation. However, little data have emerged showing a role for these processes in the resolution phase in models of in vivo inflammation. Here, we have evaluated the role of PI3K for the migration and survival of eosinophils in a model of allergic pleurisy in mice. Eosinophil accumulation in PI3Kgamma-deficient mice was inhibited at 48 h, as compared with wild-type mice but not at earlier time-points (6 and 24 h). Experiments with adoptive transfer of bone marrow showed that PI3Kgamma in eosinophils but not in non-bone marrow-derived cells was required for their accumulation. Systemic treatment with PI3K inhibitors before antigen challenge prevented the recruitment of eosinophils. This was associated with decreased Akt phosphorylation, interleukin-5 production, and eosinophil release from the bone marrow. Treatment with PI3K inhibitors 24 h after antigen challenge markedly cleared the accumulated eosinophils, an effect associated with inhibition of Akt phosphorylation and an increased number of apoptotic events. Altogether, our data demonstrate an important role of PI3Kgamma for the maintenance of eosinophilic inflammation in vivo, whereas other isoforms of PI3K may be relevant for the recruitment process.

Abstract: Multiphonon processes in a model quantum dot (QD) containing two electronic states and several optical phonon modes are considered by taking into account both intra- and interlevel terms. The Hamiltonian is exactly diagonalized, including a finite number of multiphonon processes large enough to guarantee that the result can be considered exact in the physically important energy region. The physical properties are studied by calculating the electronic Green's function and the QD dielectric function. When both the intra- and interlevel interactions are included, the calculated spectra allow several previously published experimental results obtained for spherical and self-assembled QD's, such as enhanced two-LO-phonon replica in absorption spectra and up-converted photoluminescence to be explained. An explicit calculation of the spectral line shape due to intralevel interaction with a continuum of acoustic phonons is presented, where the multiphonon processes also are shown to be important. It is pointed out that such an interaction, under certain conditions, can lead to relaxation in the otherwise stationary polaron system.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of a self-etching primer (Transbond Plus SEP, 3M Unitek, Monrovia, Calif), developed for orthodontic use, in the regularity and depth of adhesive infiltration in the enamel of human permanent teeth and to compare it with phosphoric acid using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Thirty premolars were divided in two groups of 15 each: group 1(control)—phosphoric acid 1 Transbond XT Primer (3M Unitek) and group 2— Transbond Plus SEP. Transbond XT Adhesive Paste (3M Unitek) was used in both groups for bracket bonding. All products were used according to the manufacturer's instructions. Dental frag- ments were decalcified, and for micromorphologic observation of the adhesive penetration in enamel, the resin replicas, remnant at the base of the brackets, were covered with a thin gold layer and examined by SEM. Three calibrated examiners evaluated the photomicrographs and gave scores from 0 5 without penetration to 2 5 deep penetration. The Mann Whitney U-test (P , .0001) showed a statistical difference between the two groups. The results demonstrated that the SEP was more conservative and produced a smaller amount of demineralization and less penetration of adhesive in the enamel surfaces when compared with the conventional phosphoric acid system.
