Abstract: The population changes of nine species of fish from a mangrove swamp near Port Harcourt, Nigeria, including species of Tilapia, Sarotherodon, Aplocheilichthys, Porogobius and Yongeichthys are described. The most important factor affecting the fish populations is salinity.

TL;DR: A gas liquid chromatographic analysis of trimethylsilyl (TMS) dirivatives of carbohydrates extracted from the seeds showed that the unfermented seeds contained mostly sucrose with a low content of flatus-oligosaccharides, raffinose and stachyose.
Abstract: The pH, soluble nitrogen, soluble solids and titratable acidity increased during a 6 day fermentation of fluted pumpkin seeds. Gas liquid chromatographic analysis of trimethylsilyl (TMS) dirivatives of carbohydrates extracted from the seeds showed that the unfermented seeds contained mostly sucrose with a low content of flatus-oligosaccharides, raffinose and stachyose. There were also high contents of fructose and galactose. Fermentation increased the total monosaccharides with high content of glucose and some unidentified monosaccharides. Fermentation decreased the total oligosaccharide, eliminated raffinose and stachyose and increased the content of maltose. Except for a slight decrease in total saturated and increase in total unsaturated fatty acids, fermentation had no effect on fatty acid composition.

TL;DR: It is concluded that these alternative host plants provide a potential source of stem-borer infestation on sugar-cane at Asutsuare in southern Ghana.
Abstract: Zea mays L. and Rottboellia exaltata L. were the main graminaceous plant species infested by Eldana saccharina Walker, the major pest of sugar-cane in southern Ghana. Other stem-borers of sugar-cane, Sesamia botanephaga Tams and Bowden, Sesamia penniseti Tams and Bowden, Sesamia calamistis Hampson and Chilo zacconius Bleszynski, were recorded on Zea mays, Echinocloa pyramidalis (Lamk.) et Chase, Rottboellia exaltata, Panicum maximum Jacquin and Oryza sativa L.All the stem-borer populations except E. saccharina on Rottboellia exaltata increased on their host plants. Sesamia and Chilo species were present from January to December on Echinocloa pyramidalis. It is concluded that these alternative host plants provide a potential source of stem-borer infestation on sugar-cane at Asutsuare in southern Ghana.

TL;DR: Rubber seeds (Hevea brasiliensis) were analyzed for fat, protein, total and soluble carbohydrates as mentioned in this paper, showing that rubber seeds were lower in lysine, but higher in cystine and methionine.

TL;DR: In this paper, the average quantities of crude oil delivered to refineries and oil-exporting terminals in Nigeria between 1980 and 1983 were used to estimate the quantity of petroleum wastewater discharged at each station.

TL;DR: In this article, Anchored sand-filled polypropylene mattress revetment fulfilled the requirements of optimum performance and safety for bank erosion control in the Niger Delta, using geo-technical and hydrometric data.
Abstract: Various bank erosion control measures were examined for applicability in the Niger Delta. Anchored sand-filled polypropylene mattress revetment fulfilled the requirements of optimum performance and safety. The principal design considerations of the protection revetment are analyzed using geo-technical and hydrometric data. Field stability results show that the nature of the thalweg of the river and the percentage of fines (silt/clay) content is a critical factor in the stability of protection sand embankment by hydraulic sandfill from river bed borrow pits.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present the results of an analysis of the dewfall features of a tropical station and find that dew formation starts later at night during the dry season but much earlier during the rainy season.
Abstract: This study presents the results of an analysis of the dewfall features of a tropical station. The importance of dewfall cannot be overemphasized, especially during the dry season when plants are under seriously stress. A positive correlation was found between dewfall and rainfall. Dew formation was found to peak on a diurnal basis between 6 a.m. to 8 a.m., suggesting that some steering mechanism is required for dew formation at this station. Dew formation starts later at night during the dry season but much earlier during the rainy season. The August anomaly already highlighted by Ireland showed up in dew formation as there was a marked reduction in dew formation in that month.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The failure mechanism of the river bank is complex, ranging from slip failures in high banks to shearing and toppling failures in low banks as discussed by the authors, and the use of the common slip circle model for stability evaluation appears to be adequate only for high banks.

TL;DR: In the last two decades, economic development has been slow in most of the countries of Sub-Saharan Africa (World Bank, 1981). In the middle of the 1970s when the world economy experienced inflation and recession, no where did the crises hit with greater impact than in SubSaharan Africa as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: During the last two decades, economic development has been slow in most of the countries of Sub-Saharan Africa (World Bank, 1981). In the middle of the 1970s when the world economy experienced inflation and recession, no where did the crises hit with greater impact than in Sub-Saharan Africa. This region shows slow overall economic growth, sluggish agricultural performance, rapid rates of population increase, and a balance of payment crises. Between 1960 and 1979, per capita income in 19 countries grew by less than 1% per annum. During the last decade 15 countries recorded a negative rate of income growth per capita (World Bank, 1981).

TL;DR: Observation on natural enemies of the stem-borer complex on sugar-cane in southern Ghana indicated that Descampsina sesamiae Mensil (Diptera:Tachinidae) is the most important larval parasite of Sesamia species.
Abstract: Observation on natural enemies of the stem-borer complex on sugar-cane in southern Ghana indicated that Descampsina sesamiae Mensil (Diptera:Tachinidae) is the most important larval parasite of Sesamia species. The relative abundance of this tachinid parasite appeared to vary with the rainfall pattern throughout the year and with the phenology of the sugar-cane plant. The rate of parasitism was found to be higher in the outgrowers fields than in the sugar estate's fields. Differences in cultural practices used as well as the type of vegetation bordering the sugar-cane fields, were believed to be responsible for the difference in the rate of parasitism of D. sesamiae on Sesamia species.

TL;DR: In the wake of the prevailing world oil glut which has affected the revenue earning powers of OPEC (Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries) members, there are serious proposals and arguments in favour of Nigeria's withdrawal from OPEC as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: In the wake of the prevailing world oil glut which has affected the revenue earning powers of OPEC (Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries) members, there are serious proposals and arguments in favour of Nigeria's withdrawal from OPEC. The mission of this paper is to question the ethical basis of this proposed strategy after she has benefited from OPEC membership for over a decade. This paper postulates that it would be ethically wrong to do so and suggests a strategy that would boost the petrochemical industry for agriculture, building, pharmaceuticals, automative industry, etc.
