TL;DR: The life cycles of two phycitid moths were studied under ambient laboratory conditions on groundnut, maize, sorghum, wheat and standard medium and egg hatchabilities were found to be 98.6 and 91.6% for P. interpunctella and E. cautella respectively.
Abstract: The life cycles of two phycitid moths, Plodia interpunctella (Hubn.) and Ephestia cautella (Wik.) were studied under ambient laboratory conditions on groundnut, maize, sorghum, wheat and standard medium (maize/wheat/glycerol, 8:8:1, w/w). Egg hatchabilities were found to be 98.6 and 91.6% for P. interpunctella and E. cautella respectively. Five larval instars were recorded for each species based on head-capsule width measurements. The growth ratios of the larval head-capsule width ranged from 1.08–1.72 in P. interpunctella: and 1.33–1.57 in E. cautella. These ranges fall within the acceptable range in Dyar's rule. Mean fecundities ranged from 96.83 ± 0.31 on wheat to 190.87 ± 0.47 on standard medium for P. interpunctella; and 96.83 ± 0.31 on groundnut to 192 ± 1.33 on standard medium for E. cautella. Mean developmental periods of the two moths on the selected food media ranged from 25.65 days on standard medium to 46.11 days in broken wheat for P. interpunctella; and 26.95 days in broken sorghum to 40.14 days in ground maize for E. cautella.

TL;DR: It was concluded that smoke from different wood sources affects micro‐organisms in different ways which could reflect differences in composition of the various smokes.
Abstract: Smoking of food is one common form of food preservation. Ethanol solutions of smoke from burning white mangrove (Auicennia nitida), mahogany (Khaya sp.) and abura (Mitrayyna ciliata) inhibited the growth of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Saccharomyces cereuisiae. Smoke from red mangrove (Rhizophora racemosa) and Alstonia boonei inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Saccharomyces cerevisiae but not Escherichia coli. Smoke from burning black afara (Terminalia ivorensis) inhibited the growth of only Saccharomyces cerevisiae. It was concluded that smoke from different wood sources affects micro-organisms in different ways which could reflect differences in composition of the various smokes

TL;DR: Littoral infaunal density was recorded throughout the Bonny Estuary in the Niger delta, Nigeria, to provide a baseline for the monitoring of oil pollution and pollution from the Okrika oil terminal, oil from outboard engines, and substrate disturbance by shipping are suggested as causative factors.
Abstract: Littoral infaunal density was recorded from December 1983 to October 1984 throughout the Bonny Estuary in the Niger delta, Nigeria, to provide a baseline for the monitoring of oil pollution. Results on the most abundant faunal elements, polychaetes and the fiddler crabUca tangeri L., are presented. In the upper reaches, polychaete density peaked in January — due to increases in the abundance of the principal species. In the lower reaches, euryhaline and stenohaline polychaetes exhibited maxima in April to July and lesser peaks earlier and later in the year. There were no wide fluctuations in the middle reaches, due to the lack of truly estuarine species — exceptU. tangeri which was most abundant between December and April. Features such as the salinity/substrate zones, faunistic components and reduction of species upstream, are typical of estuaries elsewhere. Others, including the low abundance of all species in the middle reaches, and the occurrence of species minimum far downstream of 5‰ S, are atypical, and pollution from the Okrika oil terminal, oil from outboard engines, and substrate disturbance by shipping, are suggested as causative factors.

TL;DR: An investigation into the causes of poor achievement in West African School Certificate Mathematics examinations was conducted in eleven randomly selected secondary schools in Port Harcourt Local Government Area of Rivers State as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: An investigation into the causes of poor achievement in West African School Certificate Mathematics examinations was conducted in eleven randomly selected secondary schools in Port Harcourt Local Government Area of Rivers State. The results showed among other things that most of the students doing mathematics have very little interest in the subject. It also shows that most of the students prefer other subjects to mathematics, and regard the subject as being difficult. Almost all the students study mathematics because it is compulsory in WASC, and because without studying it they may not gain entry into any of the Nigerian Universities. Only a very small percentage of the teachers who teach mathematics in the schools have a teaching qualification, though almost all of them are graduates. Most of the teachers teaching mathematics in these schools still use the traditional ‘talk and chalk’ method when teaching. The relationship between the students and their mathematics teachers is only fairly cordial. Few ...

Abstract: Most of the materials that constitute the uppermost formation (Benin Formation) of the lower Niger Delta in South-Eastern Nigeria are sands, shales and clays that occur at various depths within the formation. These subsurface materials have served as bearing media for both shallow and deep foundation structures.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors argue that regional planning can play important roles as catalyst for agriculture and rural development; and that a system of growth centres and/or agropolitan policy which can be important in achieving economic growth with social equity, will be far more influential.
Abstract: Urban and rural development arek inextricably related, that regional planning can play important roles as catalyst for agriculture and rural development; and that a system of growth centres and/or agropolitan policy which can be important in achieving economic growth with social equity, will be far more influential. Again if the National Planning Authority, Regional Planning Agency and the policy of growth centre in the rural areas of the recommended regions is pursued, it will not only increase agricultural productivity or a path to agricultural transformation for deleterious effects of migration to corporate farming but also could, over time help to reduce the pressure on the urban areas by providing counter-magnets to migration and we envisage, will bring about a national regional planning budget which should be operated on yearly basis.

Abstract: The changing role of women in families and their housing needs: a case study of Port Harcourt shows the significance of the contribution made by low-income women in Nigeria to household income and to meeting household expenditures. Nevertheless, women's needs and priorities are ignored by those planning the design and location of houses, neighbourhoods and services.

TL;DR: In this article, the structure of strong shock waves in a thermally-radiating and electrically-conducting fluid is studied by method of asymptotic matching principle, assuming that upstream of the shock the gas is cold and does not radiate thermally while the Mach number (M) is very high.
Abstract: The structure of strong shock waves in a thermally-radiating and electrically-conducting fluid is studied by method of asymptotic matching principle. It is assumed that upstream of the shock the gas is cold and does not radiate thermally while the Mach number (M) is very high so that after being shocked the gas now thermally radiates. The viscosity of the gas (μ) depends on temperature (T) in the simple manner μαTω where ω is a constant exponent. The problem is worthy of note in high-temperature phenomena in hypersonic flow.

TL;DR: In this article, the thermal decay of an initially hot isothermal water body contained in a tank was studied and analytical solutions were obtained for the one-dimensional heat conduction equation with heat loss from the sides of the tank.
Abstract: The thermal decay of an initially hot isothermal water body contained in a tank was studied. Analytical solutions (including a group-theoretic solution) were obtained for the one-dimensional heat conduction equation with heat loss from the sides of the tank. The convective heat transfer coefficient was assumed not to be constant over the surface of the tank but to vary with space and time. A very good agreement was obtained between the group-theoretic solution and a numerical solution using the Crank-Nicholson finite difference scheme. The analytical results are discussed in terms of the underlying physical mechanisms.
