Abstract: . Tilapia, probably Africa's best candidate for aquaculture, is faced by the problems of small size due to overpopulation in culture systems. This paper reports the effect of high salinity on the reproduction of Oreochromis niloticus (L.) while testing the effect of a 20% protein supplemental feed on the growth and survival of this species in brackishwater ponds. The trial was run for 120 days in six 100-m2 ponds with fingerlings having an initial average weight of 2·80g. Salinity in the ponds rose from 25 ppt. to 50 ppt. during the culture period. Sampling for reproduction check was conducted every 2 weeks and 20% of the fish population were weighed to monitor growth changes and adjust quantity of feed fed. A 20% protein feed was fed at the rate of 5% and 3% of the total fish biomass during the first and second, and third and fourth months of the trial respectively. After 120 days the fish in each replicate were counted and weighed in bulk to obtain total weight while 50 females from each replicate were dissected and gonads examined. Results showed that growth was significantly different (P 0·05). 95% of the females were gravid but did not spawn. This suggests that gonadal development and onset of reproduction can be delayed by high salinities, which may be another practical method of population control in the culture of O. niloticus.

Abstract: Biochemical parameters in blood specimens obtained from semi-adult rabbits of both sexes fed crude oil contaminated diets were examined. The diets had crude oil inclusions of 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20%. Blood samples were obtained from the marginal ear vein of representatives in each treatment group and assayed for urea, creatinine, total bilirubin, conjugated bilirubin and cholesterol. Abstract: The effect of 7 days of germination on levels of nitrogenous and other nutrition related parameters, protein fractions and in vitro protein digestibility of fluted pumpkin (Telfairia occidentalis) seed was studied. The non-protein nitrogen gradually increased and the protein nitrogen content decreased during germination. Albumin and globulin fractions were found to be the major seed proteins of fluted pumpkin seeds, constituting about 58.6% of the total protein of the ungerminated (raw) seeds. The protein fractions, albumin and glutelin, were observed to increase by 61.5% and 57.0%, respectively, while a 54.6% decrease was noted in the prolamine fraction. The globulin fraction increased at the beginning of germination but decreased at the end. Germination significantly (p ≤ 0.05) increased the crude protein, nitrogen solubility and in vitro protein digestibility but decreased the fat, phytic acid and polyphenol contents of the seeds.

Abstract: A b s t r a c t. An investigation into the Poisson’s ratio and elastic modulus of African nutmeg as a function of moisture content and loading rate was carried out. Quasi-static compressive tests were conducted at moisture levels of 8, 11.2, 14, 17.4 and 28.7% (d.b.) in an axial loading orientation. Both unit lateral extension and unit normal compression values were determined. Average values of 0.512 to 0.275 were obtained for moisture levels of 8 to 28.7%, respectively. Effects of loading rates were also investigated and results show that Poisson’s ratio increased from 0.136 to 0.334 at loading rates of 1 and 7 mm min -1 , respectively. Elastic modulus was observed to decrease as moisture increased. Average values of 201.5 to 41.30 N mm -2 were noted for moisture levels of 8 to 28.7%, respectively. A similar negative trend was observed with loading rate. These finding could therefore be useful in predicting the load deformation behaviour of African nutmeg.

Abstract: The paper explores the impact of hydrology on the Port-Harcourt–Patani-Warri Road. It reviews the hydrometeorological, drainage and terrain peculiarities of the area against the backdrop of the design, alignment and performance of the road. The paper ascribes the poor performance of the road to: 1. The southeast-northwest orientation of the road in a region with predominately northeast-southwest surface and subsurface flow, in which the road acts like a dam; 2. The inferior construction aggregate composition; 3. Changes in pavement condition due to interaction of local road aggregates with water.
