TL;DR: An initial routine CBC seldom changed patient management and had limited utility and the prevalence and predictors of haematologic abnormalities and the utility of a routine CBC in initial management of paediatric TB.
Abstract: There are very few reports about complete-blood-count (CBC) findings in paediatric tuberculosis. We assessed the prevalence and predictors of haematologic abnormalities and the utility of a routine CBC in initial management of paediatric TB. We reviewed records and results of investigations of all children and adolescents (ages 0–18) treated for TB disease at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada from January 2002 to December 2012. Anaemia was found in 52/138 (42%) patients, was often microcytic, more prevalent in adolescent females (Odds Ratio (OR) 3.7 [95% confidence intervals (CI) 1.27–10.6]) and those with disseminated disease (OR 3.60 [95% CI 1.12–11.53]), and often resolved with anti-tuberculous treatment. Only 4 children received iron therapy. White cell abnormalities that occurred often suggested diagnoses other than TB: lymphopenia occurred in 30/124 patients (24%) (all HIV negative) and neutrophilia in 20/124 (16%) patients, 9 of whom had pulmonary airspace disease. An initial routine CBC seldom changed patient management and had limited utility.

TL;DR: The performance and benefits of small-scale family poultry production in Khana Local Government Areas (LGA) of Rivers State, Nigeria was examined in this article, where data collected were analyzed using frequency counts and percentages.
Abstract: The performance and benefits of small-scale family poultry production in Khana Local Government Areas (LGA) of Rivers State, Nigeria was examined in this study. The data collected were analysed using frequency counts and percentages. Results showed that majority of the respondents were females, within 41 -50 years, having secondary education and maintaining a poultry size of 21 40 birds. Performance indices obtained were adequate. Majority of the poultry informants were women, who kept poultry both for household consumption and income generation and used the profit mostly for buying domestic goods. The overall results obtained suggest the possibility of obtaining steady income and sustaining household nutritional status in family poultry in Khana LGA.

TL;DR: The results of this study showed that the powdered Morus mesozygia linn twigs contained flavonoids, saponins, carbohydrates, alkaloids, tannins, but not anthraquinones.
Abstract: Aim: The aim of this study was to phytochemically analyze the aqueous, ethanolic and methanolic twig extracts of the species Morus mesozygia Linn. Stapf. Study Design: This is a cross-sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: This study was carried out at the Plant Anatomy and Physiology Research Laboratory, University of Port Harcourt, between July, 2018 and November, 2018. Methodology: Morus mesozygia linn twigs were collected and washed with distilled water, air dried for seven days and milled into fine powder. Maceration method was used to extract the powdered twig into a brownish paste using three different solvents; distilled water, ethanol and methanol. The different plant extracts were subjected to qualitative phytochemical screening for alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, carbohydrates, tannins and anthraquinones. Quantitative phytochemical analysis was done using a Gas chromatography – Mass Spectroscopy machine. Results: The results of this study showed that the powdered Morus mesozygia linn twigs contained flavonoids, saponins, carbohydrates, alkaloids, tannins, but not anthraquinones. The methanolic and aqueous twig extracts contained high amounts of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, carbohydrates and tannins, while the ethanolic extract also contained high amounts of the aforementioned phytochemicals in the same proportion, but had saponins in moderate amounts. It also showed that the methanolic twig extract had more carbohydrate than the other two extracts. The result of the GC-MS analysis showed that the three extracts contained complex compounds in varying amounts. Conclusion: The qualitative and quantitative phytochemical analyses test results of Morus mesozygia Linn Stapf. revealed the presence of the substances like alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, oils, phenolic compounds, tannins and some complex compounds discovered using GC-MS technique, in their varying concentrations for the three different extracts.
