Abstract: Lipid profile in Wister rats was investigated after administration of different concentration of aqueous extract of Allium sativum. The animals were divided into five (5) groups of five rats in each group, and were given different concentrations of the extract for three weeks. Thereafter, plasma lipid profiles were assayed. The result of comparing the mean total cholesterol (T. CHOL), triglyceride (TG), Low density lipoprotein (LDL) and control levels with those of the test groups A, B, C and D showed great decrease except in group D where there was an increase in mean LDL. The decrease in mean T.CHOL in group A and C were significant while decrease in T.CHOL in group B and D were not significant when compared with T.CHOL of Control samples at p< 0.05. The decrease in TG was significant in all test groups when compared with Control TG samples at p< 0.05, while the decrease in LDL in group D was not significant when compared with the LDL control samples at p< 0.05. The mean HDL of the test group showed a great increase when compared with the mean Control and the increase observed was significant when compared with the Control HDL at p< 0.05. The findings reveal that garlic bulb extract causes a significant reduction in some lipid profile parameters (p< 0.05) especially TG and an increase in HDL. These findings therefore suggest that the administration of Allium sativum extract could prevent plasma lipid related disease especially those associated with cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis.

Abstract: The study was designed to model the effect of liquid digestate on growth dynamics of Zea mays plant. Maize seeds were subjected to various concentrations of liquid digestate (between 0% and 72%) using One-Factor Response Design with a total of ten (10) runs in 10L-capacity plastic pots containing 10kg of loamy soil. One set of experimental runs were treated with one-time application of the corresponding digestate concentration (OTDA). Another set of experimental runs were treated with two-time application of the corresponding digestate concentration (TTDA). The first application of the liquid digestate (for OTDA and TTDA) was conducted two weeks after sowing while the second application (for TTDA alone) was conducted three weeks after the first application. The height of maize plant in all set-ups was monitored for a period of 70 days. After the 70-day period, the plants were harvested for biomass estimation. In the soil set-ups treated with OTDA, crop growth rate (1.077cm/day) and biomass yield (22.37g/kg of digestate) of Zea mays plant peaked with 48% digestate after 70 days. In the soil set-ups treated TTDA, crop growth rate (1.321cm/day) and biomass yield (29.95g/kg) of Zea mays plant peaked with 72% digestate after the same period. Optimum response generated for the crop growth rate of Zea mays plant was approximately 1.038 cm/day with a standard error of 0.014 for the OTDA treatment and 1.165cm/day and a standard error of 0.006 for the TTDA treatment at digestate concentration of 50% with a desirability of 0.928 respectively. Optimum response generated for biomass yield of the Zea mays plant was approximately 22.488 (g/kg) with a standard error of 0.621 for the OTDA treatment and 27.292 (g/kg) with a standard error of 0.399 for the TTDA treatment at digestate concentration of approximately 47.1% and a desirability of 0.930 respectively. The result suggests that the TTDA treatment method may have enhanced the growth of the maize plant better than the OTDA treatment method.

Abstract: Subsea transmission pipelines (STP) are designed to transport liquids, gases or solid/liquid mixtures over some distances. STP are buried underground or submerged in water for transportation of natural oil and gas (OG and 6 mild steel (MS) samples. With a 2M concentration of VA solution, the MS and Al samples are immersed in different plastic containers containing 400ml of seawater with pH value of 7.25 with no (0%) inhibitor added to it. A 5% (400ml) of the VA solution is poured into the measuring cylinder for each sample-Al and MS.

Abstract: The United Nations set out December 10 to recognize and celebrate human rights globally. On the other hand, Nigeria has maintained a consistent history of human rights abuses in its chequered constitutional development. As the world celebrates yet another year for human rights, the recent events in Nigeria have again raised concerns for the future of human rights in Nigeria. This research paper takes an overview of the observance and protection of human rights in Nigeria from inception to date. The research assessed the successive governments, inclusive of military regimes performance on human rights, and concluded that the nation is yet to extricate itself from the shackles of perennial human rights abuse. The research will proffer recommendations on the improvement of respect for human rights in Nigeria.

Abstract: The composition and structure of antelope assemblages were analyzed by using data from wild meat markets in three distinct study stations in the southern Niger Delta, Nigeria. The relative abundance of the different species coming into the markets was analyzed, and various diversity metrics were used to describe the different antelope communities. Sex ratios of these populations as well as the effect of season on the abundance of the various species in the markets were examined. It was observed that a single recently described species (Philantomba walteri) was the dominant species in the three localities, contributing about 70% of all the antelope individuals. The relatively low number of antelope carcasses observed in this study (less than the number of carcasses of small carnivores in the same sites) suggests that the ungulate fauna is already very depleted in the eastern Niger Delta region, with these mammals being hunted more intensely in the wet season.
