Abstract: This paper has applied thermodynamics principles to evaluate the reliability of 390 m3/hr natural gas processing plant. The thermodynamics equations were utilized in the evaluation, characterization, and numerical simulation of key process parameters in natural gas liquid extraction plant. The results obtained show the comparison of the coefficient of performance, compression ratio, isentropic work, actual work, electrical power requirements, cooling water consumption in intercoolers, compressor power output, compressor capacity, and isentropic, volumetric, and mechanical efficiency of the two-stage refrigeration unit with a flash gas economizer and these were compared with the designed specifications. The second law of thermodynamics was applied in analyzing the refrigeration unit and the result shows that exergetic losses or lost work due to irreversibility falls within operating limit that is less than 1.0%. Similarly, the performance of expansion turbine (expander) parameters was monitored and the results indicate a considerable decrease in turbine efficiencies as the inlet gas pressure increases resulting in an increased power output of the turbine leading to a higher liquefaction rate.

Abstract: It is estimated that crude oil, tourism and the illicit drug trade are among the top five most financially inducing businesses in the world. Drug cartels conduct sophisticated and well organised activities including money laundering and monitoring of large networks of their careers. In past the decade, the United Kingdom has incurred large expenditure on the treatment of drug related illnesses and, on the enforcement of drug control laws. Several drug laws are enacted to deal with the waves of illicit drugs in the country. There is controversy over the ways by which the properties of the drug traffickers and suspected drug dealer, are seized by the State; in order to seize anyone’s private property prior to commencement of legal proceedings to effect a permanent forfeiture, the law enforcement agencies are only required to show “probable cause” that the property being seized is acquired with the profit of drug crime alternatively, that the property facilitates drug criminal activities. Using data from academic materials and United Kingdom case laws, the paper argues that the United Kingdom drug trafficking laws particularly the enforcement of “civil asset recovery” under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 and, the “Criminal confiscation” under the Drug trafficking Act 1994 violates the International Human Rights Laws.

Abstract: The study assessed handling hygiene practices of food vendors in Rivers State University and its environment. A survey research design was adopted for the study while the population consisted of food vendors who prepare and sell ready-to-eat foods in the study area. Snowball sampling technique was used for the study and a total of thirty food vendors constituted the sample size for the study. A self-assessment form was used for data collection and data analyzed with frequency, percentages and Pearson’s correlation. The result showed that majority of the food vendors had no access to portable water and the operating environment untidy. Most (60%) of the food vendors appeared clean and 70% of them use personal protective clothing while 70% and 97% of them handled foods and money with bare hands while serving food. Storage of cooked food was properly kept in covered containers by 70% of the vendors while 60% of the vendors did not separate raw and cooked foods. Seventy seven (77) percent of vendors did not keep cold foods in refrigerators or ice boxes as to maintain the temperature of the food. Only 40% of the food vendors covered unused utensils while 57% of them did not clean utensils properly after use. The study found out that all the food vendors washed utensils with cold soapy water and 90% of the vendors re-used water for washing utensils.

Abstract: The decisions of extraterritorial courts have left much to be desired about the efforts of the judiciary at the national level to assert itself in the fight to tackle environmental crises. While access to court has been one of the notable barriers to securing environmental justice in Nigeria, alternative pathways have been established through which litigants find access to courts in furtherance of environmental justice which they would otherwise have been deprived of. One such pathway is the recourse to foreign courts. Nigerian courts can draw some lessons from the stance of foreign courts in dealing with environmental cases.

Abstract: The analysis of the uncoupled vertical motions of the Bonga FPSO is performed for unrestricted service. The study made use of Airy’s wave model and the strip theory, to determine the excitation forces and moments, hydrodynamic coefficients, and the RAOs. Spectral analysis was done on the basis of the above results with the Pierson-Moskowitz wave energy density spectrum using the 100-year return period storm data of the North Sea to predict the vessel responses in a realistic sea, as well as forecast the number of green water and slamming at the bow per hour. Furthermore, the (HaPMotA) computer programme written in MATLAB on the basis of the above theories was used for the analyses. As a result, the RAO diagrams, the response spectrum, force and moment diagrams, the responses for the modes of motion investigated, and the operability of the vessel in harsh environment were obtained. The result indicates that the freeboard needs to be increased to mitigate the effects of green water in the harsh environments
