Abstract: Ascorbic acid contents of the juice of four different pineapples species grown in the Rivers State of Nigeria were determined before and after storage of whole pineapple and processing and storage of the juice for two months. Ascorbic acid of the fresh juice ranged from 22.5 mg to 33.5 mg/100 g sample. After storage at room temperature (30–32 °C) of whole pineapple for two weeks, ascorbic acid was reduced to between 59 and 65 percent of the fresh juice. Processing the juice by pasteurisation reduced the ascorbic acid to between 28 and 46 percent while storage in plastic bottles for two months further reduced the ascorbic acid content to between 10 and 21 percent.

Abstract: Pared, comminuted and blanched coconut meat was freeze-dried at 25 degrees C for 24 hours and pulverized. Whole coconut meal was solvent extracted with n-hexane to yield a defatted meal while full-fat coconut protein concentrate (FFC-PC) containing 27.60% protein was prepared by alkali extraction of undefatted meal followed by isoelectric precipitation. Defatted coconut meal had a significantly (p < or = 0.05) lower crude fat but higher protein content than whole coconut meal. Similarly, FFC-PC had a significantly (p < or = 0.05) higher protein but lower carbohydrate content than whole coconut meal and defatted coconut meal. Whole coconut meal, defatted coconut meal and FFC-PC had PERs of 1.98, 2.18 and 2.48 respectively, with NPRs of 2.86, 3.28 and 3.92, respectively. Protein digestibility values of 88.75%, 89.30% and 94.02% were obtained for whole coconut meal, defatted coconut meal and full-fat coconut protein concentrate, respectively. Growth response of animals showed that FPC-PC was superior to all other test diets.

Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the most generally applied definitions and other aspects of emotional intelligence, as well as its associated managerial leadership competencies in corporate governance.Design/methodology/approach – The paper adopted a descriptive methodology in describing emotional intelligence leadership for effective corporate governance.Findings – The paper finds that the speed of change in the affairs of formal organizations worldwide tends to require the operations of those institutions to continually think and react to different situations. Abstract: Breed and seasonal influence on testicular morphometry, Gonadal Sperm Reserves (GSR), Extragonadal Sperm Reserves (ESR) was investigated in the barred Plymouth rock and the Nigerian indigenous breeds of the domestic fowl. Twenty sexually matured birds per breed were studied in the four seasons of the year. Breed significantly (p 0.05) influenced the testicular morphometric parameters, GSR, ESR nor gonadal sperm reserve/gram testis (GSR/g). The higher numerical differences observed in morphometric parameters, GSR and ESR during the early and late dry seasons suggested that the dry season favors sperm production, hence sperm reserve potentials. The testicular weight was significantly (p<0.001) correlated not only to the body weight (r = 0.63) but to paired Tunica albuginea (= 0.98, p<0.001) and paired epididymal weight (r = 0.69, p<0.001). There was also a significant (p<0.001) and positive correlation between the testicular weight and GSR (r = 0.84, p<0.001). The GSR/g (r = 0.77; p<0.001) ESR (r = 0.86; p<0.001) and ESR/g (r = 0.50, p<0.001). Based on these observations it is concluded that genetic improvement of the Nigerian indigenous breed of the domestic fowl can be carried out by increasing their body weight, hence, testicular weight through crossbreeding with the heavier barred Plymouth rock to achieve improved sperm production and reserve for year round artificial insemination.
