Abstract: Introduction: We have previously shown that a tag single nucleotide polymorphism (rs10235235), which maps to the CYP3A locus (7q22.1), was associated with a reduction in premenopausal urinary estrone glucuronide levels and a modest reduction in risk of breast cancer in women age = 15 years (ORhet = 0.84, 95% CI 0.75, 0.94; ORhom = 0.81, 95% CI 0.51, 1.30; P-trend = 0.002) but not for those who had their menarche age <= 11 years (ORhet = 1.06, 95% CI 0.95, 1.19, ORhom = 1.07, 95% CI 0.67, 1.72; P-trend = 0.29). Conclusions: To our knowledge rs10235235 is the first single nucleotide polymorphism to be associated with both breast cancer risk and age at menarche consistent with the well-documented association between later age at menarche and a reduction in breast cancer risk. These associations are likely mediated via an effect on circulating hormone levels.

Abstract: Die Diagnostik und Therapie chronisch entzundlicher Darmerkrankungen stellt im klinischen Alltag eine Herausforderung dar. Therapieentscheidungen und Diagnose basieren auf einer Zusammenschau verschiedener diagnostischer Verfahren, kombiniert aus Endoskopie, Histologie, Radiologie, klinischem Befund und Laborparametern. Labormarker konnen als nichtinvasive und schnell verfugbare Messwerte in der taglichen Routine leicht verwendet werden. Entzundungsmarker in Serum und Stuhl konnen beim Monitoring der Krankheitsaktivitat und des Therapieansprechens hilfreich sein. Serologische Parameter spielen vor allem eine Rolle bei der Erstdiagnose einer CED. Zudem sind Laborparameter bei der Beurteilung extraintestinaler Manifestationen, sekundarer Mangelerscheinungen und Therapiekomplikationen nutzlich. Eine ausreichende Beurteilung chronisch-entzundlicher Darmerkrankungen ist mittels Labormarkern allerdings nicht moglich. Letztlich entscheidet immer das klinische Gesamtbild. Dieser Artikel soll einen Uberblick uber den rationalen Einsatz aktuell verfugbarer Biomarker bei CED geben.

Abstract: Obwohl die deutsche Medizin vor 1945 weltweit fuhrend war, eine interessierte Medizinalburokratie auf Einfluss und Kontrolle drangte und alternative Heilkulturen fur stete Konkurrenz sorgten, spielten Wirbelsaulenleiden im Diskurs eine hochst untergeordnete Rolle. Dies war bedingt durch gesellschaftliche Normen und ideologische Vorbedingungen, die einen geraden Rucken einseitig mit Gesundheit und Starke des Individuums und der Nation konnotierten. Nur genetisch als „minderwertig“ angesehene Personen „durften“ in diesem Zusammenhang an Wirbelsaulenleiden erkranken. Erst als diese Diskursgrenzen durch die totale Niederlage 1945 verschwunden waren, konnten sich neue Therapien etablieren.

Abstract: The current discourse on men’s health refers too insistently to an obsolete and monolithic pattern of masculinity contrasting “men” with “women” in a simplistic manner. However, historical analysis shows the remarkable changes that have occurred in the health of men, both in terms of their attitudes and their behaviors, since the industrial revolution; so, for example, the relationship between masculinity and risk behavior throughout life, the professional life and the world of work, and also the medical evaluation of certain high-risk behaviors such as smoking. Differences of the life expectancy between men and women deserve an explanation more accurate and less simplistic. From a historical perspective of longue-duree , it is also a myth that men keep silent on matters of health.

Abstract: Aus der Erinnerungskultur der manuellen Medizin ist der Berliner Arzt Kurt Rudiger von Roques (25.5.1890 bis 30.1.1966) vollstandig verschwunden. Dies ist erstaunlich, hat er doch mit seinen Beitragen zur Wissenschaftstheorie seiner Disziplin zur Etablierung verholfen. Ereignisse am Ende seines Lebens verdunkeln die positiven Aspekte in seinem Lebenswerk.
