Abstract: The axial-flux permanent-magnet machine (AFPM) topology is suited for direct-drive applications and, due to their enhanced flux-weakening capability, AFPMs having slotted windings are the most promising candidates for use in wheel-motor drives. In consideration of this, this paper deals with an experimental study devoted to investigate a number of technical solutions to be used in AFPMs having slotted windings in order to achieve substantial reduction of both cogging torque and no-load power loss in the machine. To conduct such an experimental study, a laboratory machine was purposely built incorporating facilities that allow easy-to-achieve offline modifications of the overall magnetic arrangement at the machine air gaps, such as magnet skewing, angular shifting between rotor discs, and accommodation of either PVC or Somaloy wedges for closing the slot openings. The paper discusses experimental results and gives guidelines for the design of AFPMs with improved performance.

Abstract: Gallium has a long history as a diagnostic and chemotherapeutic agent. The pharmacological properties of Ga(III) rely on chemical mimicry; when Ga(III) is exogenously supplied to living cells it can replace Fe(III) within target molecules, thereby perturbing bacterial metabolism. Ga(III)-induced metabolic distresses are dramatic in fast-growing cells, like bacterial cells. Interest in the antibacterial properties of Ga(III) has been raised by the compelling need for novel drugs to combat multidrug-resistant bacteria and by the shortage of new antibiotic candidates in the pharmaceutical pipeline. Ga(III) activity has been demonstrated, both in vitro and in animal models of infections, on several bacterial pathogens, also including intracellular and biofilm-forming bacteria. Ga(III) activity is affected by iron availability and the metabolic state of the cell, being maximal in iron-poor media and in respiring cells. Synergism between Ga(III) and antibiotics holds promise as last resort therapy for infections sustained by pandrug-resistant bacteria.

Abstract: On 1998 May 9–11, BeppoSAX observed the low-luminosity Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051 in an ultra-dim X-ray state. The 2–10 keV flux (1.26 × 10−12 erg cm−2 s−1) was about 20 times fainter than its historical average value, and remained steady along the whole observation (∼2.3 d). The observed flat spectrum (Γ ≃ 0.8) and intense iron line (EW ≃ 600 eV) are best explained by assuming that the active nucleus has switched off, leaving only a residual reflection component visible.
