Abstract: Results are presented of a search for new particles decaying to large numbers of jets in association with missing transverse momentum, using 4.7 fb(-1) of pp collision data at root s = 7 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider in 2011. The event selection requires missing transverse momentum, no isolated electrons or muons, and from >= 6 to >= 9 jets. No evidence is found for physics beyond the Standard Model. The results are interpreted in the context of a MSUGRA/CMSSM supersymmetric model, where, for large universal scalar mass m(0), gluino masses smaller than 840 GeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level, extending previously published limits. Within a simplified model containing only a gluino octet and a neutralino, gluino masses smaller than 870 GeV are similarly excluded for neutralino masses below 100 GeV.

Abstract: ABSTRA C T We performed detailed calculations of the relativistic effects acting on both the reflection continuum and the iron line from accretion discs around rotating black holes. Fully relativistic transfer of both illuminating and reprocessed photons has been considered in Kerr space‐time. We calculated overall spectra, line profiles and integral quantities, and present their dependences on the black hole angular momentum. We show that the observed EW of the lines is substantially enlarged when the black hole rotates rapidly and/or the source of illumination is near above the hole. Therefore, such calculations provide a way to distinguish between different models of the central source.

Abstract: Searches for neutral Higgs bosons produced at LEP in association with Z bosons, in pairs and in the Yukawa process are presented in this paper. Higgs boson decays into b quarks, tau leptons, or other Higgs bosons are considered, giving rise to four-b, four-b+jets, six-b and four-tau final states, as well as mixed modes with b quarks and tau leptons. The whole mass domain kinematically accessible at LEP in these topologies is searched. The analysed data set covers both the LEP1 and LEP2 energy ranges and exploits most of the luminosity recorded by the DELPHI experiment. No convincing evidence for a signal is found, and results are presented in the form of mass-dependent upper bounds on coupling factors (in units of model-independent reference cross-sections) for all processes, allowing interpretation of the data in a large class of models.

Abstract: In this paper we explore collisional ionization and time-evolving photoionization in the X-ray-discovered, ionized absorbers in Seyfert galaxies. These absorbers show temporal changes inconsistent with simple equilibrium models. We develop a simple code to follow the temporal evolution of nonequilibrium photoionized gas. As a result several effects appear that are easily observable and that, in fact, may explain otherwise paradoxical behavior. Specifically, we find the following: 1. In many important astrophysical conditions (O VII, O VIII dominant and high [1022.5 cm-2] column density) pure collisional and photoionization equilibria can be distinguished with moderate spectral resolution observations, because of a strong absorption structure between 1 and 3 keV. This feature is due mainly to iron L XVII-XIX and neon K IX-X absorption, which is much stronger in collisional models. This absorption structure may be misinterpreted as a flattening of the intrinsic emission spectrum above ~1 keV in low-resolution data. 2. In time-evolving nonequilibrium photoionization models the response of the ionization state of the gas to sudden changes of the ionizing continuum is smoothed and delayed at low gas densities (usually up to 108 cm-3), even when the luminosity increases. The recombination time can be much longer (up to orders of magnitude) than the photoionization timescale. Hence, a photoionized absorber subject to frequent, quick, and consistent changes of ionizing luminosity is likely to be overionized with respect to the equilibrium ionization state. 3. If the changes of the ionizing luminosity are not instantaneous, and the electron density is low enough (the limit depends on the average ionization state of the gas but is usually ~107 to ~108 cm-3), the ionization state of the gas can continue to increase while the source luminosity decreases, so a maximum in the ionization state of a given element may occur during a minimum of the ionizing intensity (the opposite of the prediction of equilibrium models). 4. Different ions of different elements reach their equilibrium configuration on different timescales, so models in which all ions of all elements are in photoionization equilibrium so often fail to describe active galactic nucleus (AGN) spectral evolution. These properties are similar to those seen in several ionized absorbers in AGNs, properties that had hitherto been puzzling. We applied these models to a high signal-to-noise ratio ROSAT PSPC observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051. The compressed dynamical range of variation of the ionization parameter U and the ionization delays seen in the ROSAT observations of NGC 4051 may be simply explained by a nonequilibrium photoionization model, giving well-constrained parameters: n=(1.0)×108 cm-3 and R=(0.74)×1016 cm (~3 light-days).

Abstract: The estrogen receptor-α (ERα) is a transcription factor that regulates gene expression through the binding to its cognate hormone 17β-estradiol (E2). ERα transcriptional activity is regulated by E2-evoked 26S proteasome-mediated ERα degradation and ERα serine (S) residue 118 phosphorylation. Furthermore, ERα mediates fast cell responses to E2 through the activation of signaling cascades such as the MAPK/ERK and phosphoinositide-3-kinase/v-akt murine thymoma viral oncogene homolog 1 pathways. These E2 rapid effects require a population of the ERα located at the cell plasma membrane through palmitoylation, a dynamic enzymatic modification mediated by palmitoyl-acyl-transferases. However, whether membrane-initiated and transcriptional ERα activities integrate in a unique picture or represent parallel pathways still remains to be firmly clarified. Hence, we evaluated here the impact of ERα palmitoylation on E2-induced ERα degradation and S118 phosphorylation. The lack of palmitoylation renders ERα more susceptible to E2-dependent degradation, blocks ERα S118 phosphorylation and prevents E2-induced ERα estrogen-responsive element-containing promoter occupancy. Consequently, ERα transcriptional activity is prevented and the receptor addressed to the nuclear matrix subnuclear compartment. These data uncover a circuitry in which receptor palmitoylation links E2-dependent ERα degradation, S118 phosphorylation, and transcriptional activity in a unique molecular mechanism. We propose that rapid E2-dependent signaling could be considered as a prerequisite for ERα transcriptional activity and suggest an integrated model of ERα intracellular signaling where E2-dependent early extranuclear effects control late receptor-dependent nuclear actions.
