Abstract: Naturally occurring antioxidants are extensively studied for their capacity to protect organisms and cells from damage induced by oxygen reactive species. In fact, oxidative stress is considered a cause of aging, degenerative disease and cancer. We have focused our attention on two agents, ascorbic acid and β-carotene, commonly considered to be antioxidants, but whose protective activity against cancer is insufficiently known. This paper reports on the ability of these agents to act against damage induced by H 2 O 2 and bleomycin, in Chinese hamster ovary cells cultivated in vitro. Cytogenetic and cytofluorimetric analyses were performed. Both vitamins proved effective in reducing H 2 O 2 .induced sister chromatid exchanges, but increased H 2 O 2 . and bleomycin-induced chromosomal aberrations. Cytofluorimetric data, in contrast, showed that ascorbic acid and β-carotene act as scavengers of endogeneous and H 2 O 2 -induced oxygen species.

Abstract: Mortar-based reinforcements are an innovative solution for retrofitting existing structures that combine effectiveness, compatibility, and sustainability. Despite the recent spreading of field applications, there is still insufficient knowledge on their fundamental mechanical properties, and a regulatory gap for experimental procedures and design criteria. A Round Robin Test initiative was organized by the Rilem TC 250-CSM (Composites for the Sustainable strengthening of Masonry) to investigate the tensile and bond behaviour of mortar-based composites with basalt, carbon, glass, polyparaphenylene benzobisoxazole (PBO), aramid and steel textiles. This paper presents the tests carried out on Steel Reinforced Grout (SRG) systems, comprising three textile and four mortar types, supplied by three producers. Ten laboratories from Italy, Poland and Portugal were involved for a total of 150 tests, including direct tensile tests on textiles and composites, and single-lap bond tests on masonry substrate. The influence of the layout of the textile, the mechanical properties of the mortar matrix, the manufacturing and curing conditions, as well as the testing setup and instrumentation, is discussed to contribute to the optimization of the reinforcement systems and to the development of recommendations for laboratory testing. Finally, results are combined to derive engineering parameters for qualification and design purposes.

Abstract: We present a molecular dynamics study of the single-particle dynamics of supercooled water confined in a silica pore. Two dynamical regimes are found. Close to the hydrophilic substrate molecules are below the mode coupling crossover temperature, TC, already at ambient temperature. The water closer to the center of the pore (free water) approaches upon supercooling TC as predicted by mode coupling theories. For free water the crossover temperature and crossover exponent γ are extracted from power-law fits to both the diffusion coefficient and the relaxation time of the late α region.
