TL;DR: The authors investigated the spatial manifestation of the 4.2'ka'BP event during the boreal winter season in Eurasia, where climate variability is a function of the spatiotemporal dynamics of the westerly winds.
Abstract: . Causal explanations for the 4.2 ka BP event are based on the
amalgamation of seasonal and annual records of climate variability that was
manifest across global regions dominated by different climatic regimes.
However, instrumental and paleoclimate data indicate that seasonal climate
variability is not always sequential in some regions. The present study
investigates the spatial manifestation of the 4.2 ka BP event during the boreal
winter season in Eurasia, where climate variability is a function of the
spatiotemporal dynamics of the westerly winds. We present a multi-proxy
reconstruction of winter climate conditions in Europe, west Asia, and
northern Africa between 4.3 and 3.8 ka. Our results show that, while winter
temperatures were cold throughout the region, precipitation amounts had a
heterogeneous distribution, with regionally significant low values in W Asia,
SE Europe, and N Europe and local high values in the N Balkan Peninsula, the
Carpathian Mountains, and E and NE Europe. Further, strong northerly winds
were dominating in the Middle East and E and NE Europe. Analyzing the
relationships between these climatic conditions, we hypothesize that in the
extratropical Northern Hemisphere, the 4.2 ka BP event was caused by the
strengthening and expansion of the Siberian High, which effectively blocked
the moisture-carrying westerlies from reaching W Asia and enhanced outbreaks
of cold and dry winds in that region. The behavior of the winter and summer
monsoons suggests that when parts of Asia and Europe were experiencing winter
droughts, SE Asia was experiencing similar summer droughts, resulting from
failed and/or reduced monsoons. Thus, while in the extratropical regions of
Eurasia the 4.2 ka BP event was a century-scale winter phenomenon, in the
monsoon-dominated regions it may have been a feature of summer climate
conditions.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used geometrically defined divisors on moduli spaces of pointed curves to compute the graded Betti numbers of general sets of points on any nonhyperelliptic canonically embedded curve.
Abstract: We use geometrically defined divisors on moduli spaces of pointed curves to compute the graded Betti numbers of general sets of points on any nonhyperelliptic canonically embedded curve. This gives a positive answer to the Minimal Resolution Conjecture in the case of canonical curves. But we prove that the conjecture fails on curves of large degree. These results are related to the existence of theta divisors associated to certain stable vector bundles.

TL;DR: In characterization of these materials in regards to their swelling behavior in organic and aqueous solvents, thermal/thermoresponsive properties, and composition, assessment of their magnetic characteristics disclosed tunable superparamagnetic behavior.
Abstract: This study deals with the preparation of novel multiresponsive (magnetoresponsive, thermoresponsive and pH-responsive) nanocomposite conetworks consisting of oleic acid-coated magnetite nanoparticles (OA·Fe3O4), hydrophilic/thermoresponsive hexa(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (HEGMA), hydrophobic/metal binding 2-(acetoacetoxy)ethyl methacrylate (AEMA), and pH-responsive/thermoresponsive N-diethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA) and 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) moieties. Conventional free radical copolymerization was employed for the synthesis of random conetworks in the absence and presence of preformed OA·Fe3O4. Further, in characterization of these materials in regards to their swelling behavior in organic and aqueous solvents, thermal/thermoresponsive properties, and composition, assessment of their magnetic characteristics disclosed tunable superparamagnetic behavior. These systems were also evaluated toward their ability to adsorb and release a solute (benzoic acid) in a c...

TL;DR: In this article, the adsorptive performances of alkaline treated peat have been investigated for the removal of Pb(II, Co(II), and Ni(II) ions from aqueous solutions.
Abstract: The adsorptive performances of alkaline treated peat have been investigated for the removal of Pb(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The influence of initial metal ions concentration and equilibrium contact time was studied in a series of batch experiments, in comparison with natural peat. An increasing of adsorption capacity of alkaline treated peat was obtained for all studied heavy metals (23.07% - Pb(II), 23.53% - Co(II), and 26.19% - Ni(II)). The Langmuir isotherm model was the best model for the mathematical description of studied heavy metals adsorption on alkaline treated peat. A significant decrease of equilibrium contact time in case of alkaline treated peat was also found. The kinetics of Pb(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) uptake by alkaline treated peat followed the pseudo-second order mechanism. The FT-IR spectrometry analysis showed that carboxylic (-COO-) and hydroxyl (-OH) groups play an important role in the heavy metals binding process. The heavy metal could by easily eluted fr...

TL;DR: The data support the administration of probiotics to humans because of their hypolipidemic effects (through decreasing intestinal NPC1L1 and MTTP) and antioxidant effects (stimulating HDL-associated paraoxonase-1).
Abstract: Scope
Hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia, and the oxidative stress are among the known risk factors of atherosclerosis. Our aim was to assess the hypolipidemic and antioxidant effects of a probiotic mix (Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium animalis) in hyperlipidemic hamsters (HL).
Methods and results
Male Golden Syrian hamsters developed hyperlipidemia after 21 weeks of fat diet. For the last 5 weeks of experiment, ten HL were treated with the probiotic mix (HLP), ten received water (HL). Ten animals received standard chow (N). Increase of plasma total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), phospholipids (PL), oxidized LDL, glucose, of 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) in plasma, liver, and myocardium, and of intestinal Niemann Pick C1 like 1 (NPC1L1) and microsomal TG transfer protein (MTTP) expression was observed in HL versus N. The probiotic mix decreased plasma TC, TG, PL, oxidized LDL, 4-HNE, and glucose levels and increased paraoxonase-1 activity, decreased NPC1L1 and MTTP protein expression compared to HL. In HLP liver, a significant reduction of TC, TG, and fatty acids was observed. PL increased and 4-HNE levels decreased in the liver and myocardium of HLP versus HL.
Conclusion
Our data support the administration of probiotics to humans because of their hypolipidemic (through decreasing intestinal NPC1L1 and MTTP) and antioxidant effects (stimulating HDL-associated paraoxonase-1).
