TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied k-radially symmetric solutions corresponding to topological defects of charge for integer liquid crystals in the Landau-de-Gennes model describing liquid crystal in two-dimensional domains.
Abstract: We study k-radially symmetric solutions corresponding to topological defects of charge $$\frac{k}{2}$$
for integer $$k
ot = 0$$
in the Landau-de Gennes model describing liquid crystals in two-dimensional domains. We show that the solutions whose radial profiles satisfy a natural sign invariance are stable when $$|k| = 1$$
(unlike the case $$|k| > 1$$
which we treated before). The proof crucially uses the monotonicity of the suitable components, obtained by making use of the cooperative character of the system. A uniqueness result for the radial profiles is also established.

TL;DR: In this paper, a correlation-based approach to analyze financial data from the US stock market, both daily and monthly observations from the Dow Jones, was used to compute the entropy based on the singular value decomposition of the correlation matrix.
Abstract: We use a correlation-based approach to analyze financial data from the US stock market, both daily and monthly observations from the Dow Jones. We compute the entropy based on the singular value decomposition of the correlation matrix for the components of the Dow Jones Industrial Index. Based on a moving window, we derive time varying measures of entropy for both daily and monthly data. We find that the entropy has a predictive ability with respect to stock market dynamics as indicated by the Granger causality tests.

TL;DR: This method is multi-parametric and can distinguish different populations of macrophages with reference to their erythrophagocytic potential and has broad applications from the initial step of contact to the subsequent cascade of time-dependent changes resulting from that signal transduction.
Abstract: A rapid, sensitive, and reproducible flow cytofluorimetric procedure is described for quantitation of erythrophagocytosis based on the use of red blood cells (RBCs) labeled with the fluorescent probe PKH-26. The procedure involves the following steps: i) incubation of PKH-26-labeled erythrocytes with macrophages, ii) removal of un-bound red blood cells, iii) lysis of membrane-bound RBCs, and iv) measurement of extent of phagocytosis by direct flow-cytometric analysis of intact macrophages. Each step was controlled by fluorescence microscopy. Use of fluorescent, instead of radio-labeled RBCs, makes the method more sensitive, rapid, and avoids radioactive hazards. Furthermore, this approach is multi-parametric and can distinguish different populations of macrophages with reference to their erythrophagocytic potential. This technology moreover, has broad applications from the initial step of contact (between effector and target cells to study the specific receptor mediated attachment) to the subsequent cascade of time-dependent changes resulting from that signal transduction.

TL;DR: For the recently introduced isotropic-relaxed micromorphic generalized continuum model, it is shown that, under the assumption of positive-definite energy, planar harmonic waves have real velocity and a necessary and sufficient condition for real wave velocity which is weaker than the positive definiteness of the energy is obtained.
Abstract: For the recently introduced isotropic relaxed micromorphic generalized continuum model, we show that under the assumption of positive definite energy, planar harmonic waves have real velocity. We also obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for real wave velocity which is weaker than positive-definiteness of the energy. Connections to isotropic linear elasticity and micropolar elasticity are established. Notably, we show that strong ellipticity does not imply real wave velocity in micropolar elasticity, while it does in isotropic linear elasticity.
