Abstract: Recent results are reviewed concerning the synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) and various types of magnetic nanofluids (MNF) or ferrofluids, their structural properties and behavior in an external magnetic field, specially tailored to meet the requirements of some specific engineering and biomedical applications. There are described the chemical co-precipitation procedure and the liquid- and gas-phase thermal decomposition methods to obtain magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4, γ-Fe2O3, CoFe2O4, Co, Fe and Fe-C) of adequate size distribution to prepare magnetic nanofluids. Sterical stabilization of MNPs in organic and water carrier liquids is discussed in details, related to the diagrams of magnetic nanofluid synthesis procedures. The macroscopic behavior, especially the magnetic and flow properties of magnetic fluids and their compatibility with various media and exploitation conditions in magnetofluidic devices are described related to composition and structural characteristics, such as nature and size of magnetic nanoparticles, nature and chain length of surfactants used for ultrastable dispersion of magnetic nanoparticles in various non-polar and polar carrier liquids, hydrodynamic size of particles, as well as the formation and characteristics of agglomerates induced by an applied magnetic field.

Abstract: CD81 is a major receptor for Hepatitis C Virus (HCV). It belongs to the tetraspanin family whose members form dynamic clusters with numerous partner proteins and with one another, forming tetraspanin-enriched areas in the plasma membrane. In our study, we combined single-molecule microscopy and biochemistry experiments to investigate the clustering and membrane behaviour of CD81 in the context of cells expressing EWI-2wint, a natural inhibitor of HCV entry. Interestingly, we found that EWI-2wint reduces the global diffusion of CD81 molecules due to a decrease of the diffusion rate of mobile CD81 molecules and an increase in the proportion of confined molecules. Indeed, we demonstrated that EWI-2wint promotes CD81 clustering and confinement in CD81-enriched areas. In addition, we showed that EWI-2wint influences the colocalization of CD81 with Claudin-1 - a co-receptor required for HCV entry. Together, our results indicate that a change in membrane partitioning of CD81 occurs in the presence of EWI-2wint. This study gives new insights on the mechanism by which HCV enters into its target cells, namely by exploiting the dynamic properties of CD81.

Abstract: Pulsational properties of 1.8 stellar models covering the latest stages of contraction toward the main sequence up to early hydrogen burning phases are investigated by means of linear nonadiabatic analyses. Results confirm that pre-main sequence stars (pms) which cross the classical instability strip on their way toward the main sequence are pulsationally unstable with respect to the classical opacity mechanisms. For both pms and main sequence types of models in the lower part of the instability strip, the unstable frequency range is found to be roughly the same. Some non-radial unstable modes are very sensitive to the deep internal structure of the star. It is shown that discrimination between pms and main sequence stages is possible using differences in their oscillation frequency distributions in the low frequency range.

Abstract: NADPH oxidase (Nox)-derived reactive oxygen species (ROS) are instrumental in all inflammatory phases of atherosclerosis. Dysregulated histone deacetylase (HDAC)-related epigenetic pathways have been mechanistically linked to alterations in gene expression in experimental models of cardiovascular disorders. Hitherto, the relation between HDAC and Nox in atherosclerosis is not known. We aimed at uncovering whether HDAC plays a role in mediating Nox up-regulation, oxidative stress, inflammation, and atherosclerotic lesion progression. Human non-atherosclerotic and atherosclerotic arterial samples, ApoE−/− mice, and in vitro polarized monocyte-derived M1/M2-macrophages (Mac) were examined. Male ApoE−/− mice, maintained on normal or high-fat, cholesterol-rich diet, were randomized to receive 10 mg/kg suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid (SAHA), a pan-HDAC inhibitor, or its vehicle, for 4 weeks. In the human/animal studies, real-time PCR, Western blot, lipid staining, lucigenin-enhanced chemiluminescence assay, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were employed. The protein levels of class I, class IIa, class IIb, and class IV HDAC isoenzymes were significantly elevated both in human atherosclerotic tissue samples and in atherosclerotic aorta of ApoE−/− mice. Treatment of ApoE−/− mice with SAHA reduced significantly the extent of atherosclerotic lesions, and the aortic expression of Nox subtypes, NADPH-stimulated ROS production, oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory markers. Significantly up-regulated HDAC and Nox subtypes were detected in inflammatory M1-Mac. In these cells, SAHA reduced the Nox1/2/4 transcript levels. Collectively, HDAC inhibition reduced atherosclerotic lesion progression in ApoE−/− mice, possibly by intertwined mechanisms involving negative regulation of Nox expression and inflammation. The data propose that HDAC-oriented pharmacological interventions could represent an effective therapeutic strategy in atherosclerosis.

Culture and anti-epidemic policy do not necessarily conflict with each other. All countries and governments should be more tolerant to each other in seeking cultural and political consensus to overcome this historically tragic pandemic together.
