23 Oct 2002TL;DR: It is shown that abstract structures suitable for expressing molecular interaction can provide an interpretation of the π-calculus, a known calculus of communicating concurrent systems, and some notions and results of the concurrency theory are used.
Abstract: We introduce and study abstract structures which are suitable for expressing molecular interaction. The abstract structures are able to manage shared resources and to describe the use of shared resources. We show that these structures can provide an interpretation of the π-calculus, a known calculus of communicating concurrent systems. We briefly describe DNA methylation by using the π-calculus. Molecular interactions during DNA methylation imply changes of conformation and other modifications; these changes can be modelled by substitutions. Formally, we use some notions and results of the concurrency theory, particularly related to the π-calculus and multiset semantics.

TL;DR: In this paper, a simple but efficient solution has been suggested: combustion reactions were carried out in a round bottom flask and the evolving gases were bubbled in a beaker filled with water.
Abstract: Combustion synthesis of Fe3O4 and properties of the resulted powders have been discussed in relation to reaction atmosphere (in air/in the absence of air) and used fuel (sucrose, citric acid and glucose). Conducting the combustion reactions in air caused the rapid oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ under the influence of the atmospheric oxygen; therefore the final reaction product was a mixture of α-Fe2O3 and γ-Fe2O3. In order to avoid the oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ a simple but efficient solution has been suggested: combustion reactions were carried out in a round bottom flask and the evolving gases were bubbled in a beaker filled with water. This solution allowed the preparation of Fe3O4 nanopowders, with crystallite size varying from 10 nm (glucose) to 18 nm (citric acid). Depending on the used fuel, the specific surface area of the magnetite powders varied between 56 m2/g (citric acid) and 106 m2/g (glucose). The saturation magnetization of Fe3O4 powders prepared in the absence of air ranged between 55.3 emu/g (glucose) and 59.4 emu/g (sucrose).

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that the singular part of the Borel probability measure μ on the real line is purely atomic and the density of μ t ≥ 1, provided that t > 1.
Abstract: Consider a Borel probability measure μ on the real line, and denote by {μ
t
: t≥1} the free additive convolution semigroup defined by Nica and Speicher. We show that the singular part of μ
t
is purely atomic and the density of μ
t
is locally analytic, provided that t > 1. The main ingredient is a global inversion theorem for analytic functions on a half plane.

TL;DR: In this paper, shape-stabilized phase change materials composed of lauric acid and mesoporous silica with a high heat of fusion through evaporative solution impregnation are employed.
Abstract: The high variability and low heat of fusion of composite shape-stabilized phase change materials is a considerable challenge to their widespread application. Here, we present the synthesis of shape-stabilized phase change materials composed of lauric acid and mesoporous silica with a high heat of fusion through evaporative solution impregnation. Two hexagonal ordered silica with 2.8 and 6.3 nm pores (MCM-41, SBA-15) and two disordered mesocellular foams with 27–34.9 nm spherical pores connected by 10.4–14.9 nm windows are employed. The thermal properties and stability, heat storage efficiency, crystallization, and textural and chemical properties are investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis, small- and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms, and optical and electron microscopy, as well as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Mesocellular foam silica (MCF)-based materials with up to 83% wt fatty acid show large latent heat (124 J g...

TL;DR: This paper provides an informal introduction to membrane computing, focused on the main ideas, the main classes of results and of applications, with emphasis on the usefulness of membrane computing as a framework for devising models of interest for biological and medical research.
Abstract: The internal organization and functioning of living cells, as well as their cooperation in tissues and higher order structures, can be a rich source of inspiration for computer science, not fully exploited at the present date. Membrane computing is an answer to this challenge, well developed at the theoretical (mathematical and computability theory) level, already having several applications (via usual computers), but without having yet a bio-lab implementation. After briefly discussing some general issues related to natural computing, this paper provides an informal introduction to membrane computing, focused on the main ideas, the main classes of results and of applications. Then, three recent achievements, of three different types, are briefly presented, with emphasis on the usefulness of membrane computing as a framework for devising models of interest for biological and medical research.
