TL;DR: Eleven growth substances were tested for their bud producing capacity in Funaria hygrometrica and the cytokinins: benzylaminopurine, kinetin and mercaptopurine showed a quantitative relationship while methylaminipurine did not and there existed a linear relationship between reduction in buds and abscisic acid added.
Abstract: Eleven growth substances were tested for their bud producing capacity in Funaria hygrometrica. IAA and gibberellic acid showed no response, neither did inositol, abscisic acid and adenine. The cytokinins: benzylaminopurine, kinetin and mercaptopurine showed a quantitative relationship while methylaminopurine did not. When different amounts of abscisic acid were added together with 10 μg kinetin (which gave maximal production of buds), there existed a linear relationship between reduction in buds and abscisic acid added. Results are obtained in two weeks and it is therefore a fairly quick method for assaying certain cytokinin and also abscisic acid.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used a mode-locked neodymium laser as the intense light source and found that the operating wavelength of this laser, 1.06 µm, is such that a positive result would indicate excitation by three photon absorption.
Abstract: STUDIES of the blue fluorescence generated in solutions of certain organic dyes, for example, cryptocyanine, by the intense emission of a Q-switched ruby laser have demonstrated the two photon nature of the excitation process1,2. A similar fluorescence effect is observed in the pure solvent 1-chloro-naphthalene (CLNP) and attributed to two photon absorption in the tail of the strong band centred near 300 nm1,2. This intensity-dependent absorption is also thought to initiate the strong self-Q-switching effect observed when a cell containing the pure solvent is inserted in the cavity of a ruby laser3. There is no a priori reason to exclude higher order excitation processes if the incident light has the appropriate wavelength and so we have looked for the characteristic fluorescence of CLNP using a mode locked neodymium laser as the intense light source. The operating wavelength of this laser, 1.06 µm, is such that a positive result would indicate excitation by three photon absorption.

TL;DR: Agglutinins to Leptospira have been demonstrated in 18.7 per cent.
Abstract: ummary Agglutinins to Leptospira have been demonstrated in 18.7 per cent. of fit Thoroughbred horses from training stables in Berkshire and in 21.2 per cent. of fit Thoroughbreds from various parts of Britain. By contrast 65.2 per cent. of sick horses whose symptoms suggested leptospirosis carried agglutinins to the same organisms. In one case leptospirosis has contributed to poor racing performance and its possible significance for the Thoroughbred horse is discussed.

TL;DR: Using a range of assay systems, the effect of light on the inhibitory properties of several carotenoids were investigated and there was no evidence that the inhibitors obtained by in vitro degradation of 5,6-epoxyxanthophylls play a part in phototropism.
Abstract: Using a range of assay systems, the effect of light on the inhibitory properties of several carotenoids were investigated. The 5,6-epoxyxanthophylls: violaxanthin, neoxanthin and 5,6-monoepoxylutein when illuminated were shown to cause inhibition in the various assays, while a certain amount of inhibition also occurred with the dark treatment. The suggestion that phototropism might be the result of light induced formation of inhibitory compounds was also investigated and there was no evidence that the inhibitors obtained by in vitro degradation of 5,6-epoxyxanthophylls play a part in phototropism.

TL;DR: In this article, an optical etching technique for producing small optical gratings in which a metallic film is used as a Q-switch for a ruby laser system was described. But this technique is limited to the case of Fig. 1.
Abstract: WE recently described1 an optical etching technique for producing small optical gratings in which a metallic film is used as a Q-switch for a ruby laser system. We have been able to produce line spacings as small as 180 nm using frequency doubled ruby laser radiation in the optical arrangement of Fig. 1; this corresponds to band 13 on Nobert's finest ruled test plate2. With further doubling of the laser light, spacings of order 90 nm should be obtainable.

TL;DR: Rat liver tissue slices, isolated lysosomes and cultured skin fibroblasts have demonstrated similar elevations of acid alpha-glucosidase activity after incubation with cortisone, and Cortisone-treated human liver tissue, obtained by needle biopsy, also shows an increase in acidalpha-glue activity.
Abstract: Cortisone causes a marked increase in the activity of liver acid α-glucosidase 2h after injection into male Wistar rats. Studies on rat liver tissue slices, isolated lysosomes and cultured skin fibroblasts have demonstrated similar elevations of acid α-glucosidase activity after incubation with cortisone. Cortisone-treated human liver tissue, obtained by needle biopsy, also shows an increase in acid α-glucosidase activity. Neutral α-glucosidase activity was not stimulated by cortisone in vivo or in liver slices.
