Abstract: The long-term decline of British Corncrakes continues apace. This 1978–79 survey located 700 calling birds (and estimated 730– 750 in total), of which all but 12 were in Scotland (and mainly in the Hebrides). These, together with about 1,500 in Ireland, are now a substantial proportion of the population remaining in western Europe.
