Abstract: GexSi1−x films are grown on Si by molecular beam epitaxy and analyzed by Nomarski optical interference microscopy, Rutherford ion backscattering and channeling, x‐ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. The full range of alloy compositions will grow smoothly on silicon. GexSi1−x films with x≤0.5 can be grown free of dislocations by means of strained‐layer epitaxy where lattice mismatch is accommodated by tetragonal strain. Critical thickness and composition values are tabulated for strained‐layer growth. Multiple strained layers are combined to form a GexSi1−x/Si strained‐layer superlattice.

Abstract: I focus on the role of case studies in developing causal explanations. I distinguish between the theoretical purposes of case studies and the case selection strategies or research designs used to advance those objectives. I construct a typology of case studies based on their purposes: idiographic (inductive and theory-guided), hypothesis-generating, hypothesis-testing, and plausibility probe case studies. I then examine different case study research designs, including comparable cases, most and least likely cases, deviant cases, and process tracing, with attention to their different purposes and logics of inference. I address the issue of selection bias and the “single logic” debate, and I emphasize the utility of multi-method research.

Abstract: Targeting of multiple genomic loci with Cas9 is limited by the need for multiple or large expression constructs. Here we show that the ability of Cpf1 to process its own CRISPR RNA (crRNA) can be used to simplify multiplexed genome editing. Using a single customized CRISPR array, we edit up to four genes in mammalian cells and three in the mouse brain, simultaneously.

Abstract: We integrate the upper-echelons perspective with the attention-based view of the firm by examining the role of attentional orientation of top management teams (TMTs). In the context of airline deregulation, we find that deregulation caused a shift in managerial attention, but that this shift in attention was the greatest for firms that changed the composition and compensation of their TMTs in ways that favored the deregulated regime. We also find that attention partially mediated the relationship between TMT changes and strategy changes. The results of this study shed light on the transformation of industry attention patterns following an environmental shift, and the role of TMT composition and incentive systems in that process.

Abstract: Neuronal oscillations allow for temporal segmentation of neuronal spikes. Interdependent oscillators can integrate multiple layers of information. We examined phase–phase coupling of theta and gamma oscillators in the CA1 region of rat hippocampus during maze exploration and rapid eye movement sleep. Hippocampal theta waves were asymmetric, and estimation of the spatial position of the animal was improved by identifying the waveform-based phase of spiking, compared to traditional methods used for phase estimation. Using the waveform-based theta phase, three distinct gamma bands were identified: slow gamma S (gamma S ; 30–50 Hz), midfrequency gamma M (gamma M ; 50–90 Hz), and fast gamma F (gamma F ; 90–150 Hz or epsilon band). The amplitude of each sub-band was modulated by the theta phase. In addition, we found reliable phase–phase coupling between theta and both gamma S and gamma M but not gamma F oscillators. We suggest that cross-frequency phase coupling can support multiple time-scale control of neuronal spikes within and across structures.
