TL;DR: Functional and evolutionary differences between LoF-tolerant and recessive disease genes and a method for using these differences to prioritize candidate genes found in clinical sequencing studies are described.
Abstract: Genome-sequencing studies indicate that all humans carry many genetic variants predicted to cause loss of function (LoF) of protein-coding genes, suggesting unexpected redundancy in the human genome. Here we apply stringent filters to 2951 putative LoF variants obtained from 185 human genomes to determine their true prevalence and properties. We estimate that human genomes typically contain ~100 genuine LoF variants with ~20 genes completely inactivated. We identify rare and likely deleterious LoF alleles, including 26 known and 21 predicted severe disease-causing variants, as well as common LoF variants in nonessential genes. We describe functional and evolutionary differences between LoF-tolerant and recessive disease genes and a method for using these differences to prioritize candidate genes found in clinical sequencing studies.

TL;DR: The authors examined the relationship between demographic diversity on boards of directors with firm financial performance using 1993 and 1998 financial performance data (return on asset and investment) and the percentage of women and minorities on board of directors for 127 large US companies.
Abstract: This study examines the relationship between demographic diversity on boards of directors with firm financial performance. This relationship is examined using 1993 and 1998 financial performance data (return on asset and investment) and the percentage of women and minorities on boards of directors for 127 large US companies. Correlation and regression analyses indicate board diversity is positively associated with these financial indicators of firm performance. Implications for both strategic human resource management and future research are discussed.

TL;DR: A highly luminescent microporous metal-organic framework is capable of very fast and reversible detection of the vapors of the nitroaromatic explosive 2,4-dinitrotoluene and the plastic explosive taggant 2,3-dimethyl-2,3 -dinitrobutane through redox fluorescence quenching with unprecedented sensitivity.

TL;DR: The most useful parts of large-sample theory are accessible to scientists outside statistics and certainly to master's-level statistics students who ignore most of measure theory as discussed by the authors, which constitutes a coherent body of concepts and results that are central to both theoretical and applied statistics.
Abstract: This introductory book on the most useful parts of large-sample theory is designed to be accessible to scientists outside statistics and certainly to master’s-level statistics students who ignore most of measure theory. According to the author, “the subject of this book, first-order large- sample theory, constitutes a coherent body of concepts and results that are central to both theoretical and applied statistics.” All of the other existing books published on the subject over the last 20 years, from Ibragimov and Has’minskii in 1979 to the most recent by Van der Waart in 1998 have a common prerequisite in mathematical sophistication (measure theory in particular) that do not make the concepts available to a wide audience.

TL;DR: It is hypothesized that automatic spike-sorting algorithms have the potential to significantly lower error rates, and implementation of a semi-automatic classification system confirms this suggestion, reducing errors close to the estimated optimum, in the range 0-8%.
Abstract: Simultaneous recording from large numbers of neurons is a prerequisite for understanding their cooperative behavior. Various recording techniques and spike separation methods are being used toward ...
