Abstract: Combined processes of biological anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) and UV/H2O2 at a laboratory scale were studied to treat a synthetic slaughterhouse wastewater. In this study, the total organic carbon (TOC) loadings of 0.2–1.1 g/(L day) were used. The results revealed that combined processes had a higher efficiency to treat the synthetic slaughterhouse wastewater. Up to 95% TOC removal was obtained for an influent concentration of 973.3 mgTOC/L at the hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 3.8 days in the ABR and 3.6 h in the UV photoreactor. Meanwhile, up to 97.7% and 96.6% removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 5-day carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand (CBOD5) were observed in the ABR for the same influent concentration, respectively. Comparatively, for an influent concentration of 157.6 mgTOC/L, the UV/H2O2 process alone with the TOC loading of 0.06–1.9 g/(L h) was also studied, in which, up to 64.3%, 83.7%, and 84.3% of TOC, COD, and CBOD5 removal were observed, respectively, at the HRT of 2.5 h with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentration of 529 mg/L. It was found that individual ABR and UV/H2O2 processes enhanced the biodegradability of the treated effluent by an increased CBOD5/COD ratio of 0.4 to 0.6. An optimum H2O2 dosage of 3.5 (mgH2O2)/(mgTOCin h) was also found for the UV/H2O2 process.

Abstract: Wayne Gretzky’s PEBBLES TM (Providing Education By Bringing Learning Environments to Students) is a unique example of a personal technology, one in which PC-based video-conferencing is used to make a real-time link between a hospitalised child and his or her regular classroom. The system provides an opportunity for children who are in isolated situations, such as hospitals, to maintain a meaningful link with their regular educational and social environments, thereby minimising many of the secondary problems that may develop as a result of long-term illness and hospitalisation. The objective of this paper is to illustrate the impact that PEBBLES had on one child who directly benefited from the system and on the people with whom she interacted (classmates, parents, teachers and hospital staff). These results were used to explore how exposure to this personal technology influenced the behaviours and attitudes of those involved in this study. The results indicate that, overall, PEBBLES has a very positive effect on both the young and adult participants; the most dramatic effect of all was on the ill child who used PEBBLES to attend school.

Abstract: Purpose – This paper seeks to assess the feasibility and desirability of a major emerging economy adopting and implementing fair value accounting (FVA), as codified in the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), by studying China's recent experience.Design/methodology/approach – The paper examines the extent of FVA adoption in China's new accounting standards (“2007GAAP”), reasons for differences from the International Accounting Standard Board's IFRS, and how 2007GAAP has been implemented in practice. Data are obtained from content analyses of IFRS and 2007GAAP FVA requirements, critical assessments of standard setters' official statements, and analyses of empirical evidence from official reports, media, and academic research.Findings – The authors find a high degree of adoption of IFRS FVA standards in China's 2007GAAP for financial instruments, but many differences for non‐financial long‐term asset investments.
