Abstract: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new class of microporous materials that possess framework flexibility, large surface areas, “tailor-made” framework functionalities, and tunable pore sizes. These features empower MOFs superior performances and broader application spectra than those of zeolites and phosphine-based molecular sieves. In parallel with designing new structures and new chemistry of MOFs, the observation of unique breathing behaviors upon adsorption of gases or solvents stimulates their potential applications as host materials in gas storage for renewable energy. This has attracted intense research energy to understand the causes at the atomic level, using in situ X-ray diffraction, calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and molecular dynamics simulations. This article is developed in the following order: first to introduce the definition of MOFs and the observation of their framework flexibility. Second, synthesis routes of MOFs are summarized with the emphasis on the hydrothermal synthesis, owing to the environmental-benign and economically availability of water. Third, MOFs exhibiting breathing behaviors are summarized, followed by rationales from thermodynamic viewpoint. Subsequently, effects of various functionalities on breathing behaviors are appraised, including using post-synthetic modification routes. Finally, possible framework spatial requirements of MOFs for yielding breathing behaviors are highlighted as the design strategies for new syntheses.

Abstract: Managing international teams with geographically distributed participants is a complex task. The risk of communication breakdowns increases due to cultural and organizational differences grounded in the geographical distribution of the participants. Such breakdowns indicate general misunderstandings and a lack of shared meaning between participants. In this paper, we address the complexity of building shared meaning. We examine the communication breakdowns that occurred in two globally distributed virtual teams by providing an analytical distinction of the organizational context as the foundation for building shared meaning at three levels. Also we investigate communication breakdowns that can be attributed to differences in lifeworld structures, organizational structures, and work process structures within a virtual team. We find that all communication breakdowns are manifested and experienced by the participants at the work process level; however, resolving breakdowns may require critical reflection at other levels. Where previous research argues that face-to-face interaction is an important variable for virtual team performance, our empirical observations reveal that communication breakdowns related to a lack of shared meaning at the lifeworld level often becomes more salient when the participants are co-located than when geographically distributed. Last, we argue that creating translucence in communication structures is essential for building shared meanings at all three levels.

Abstract: This paper presents a new application of power and voltage balance control schemes for the cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter (CHMI)-based solid-state transformer (SST) topology. To reduce load on the controller and simplify modulation algorithm, a master–slave control (MSC) strategy is designed for the dual active bridge (DAB) stage. The master controller executes all control and modulation calculations, and the slave controllers manage only device switching and protection. Due to the inherent power and dc-link voltage unbalance in cascaded H-bridge-based SST, this paper presents a compensation strategy based on three-phase dq decoupled current controller. An optimum zero-sequence component is injected in the modulation scheme so that the three-phase grid currents are balanced. Furthermore, to tightly regulate the output voltage of all the DAB modules to target value, a dynamic reference voltage method is also implemented. With this proposed control method, the three-phase grid currents and dc-link voltage in each module can be simultaneously balanced. Finally, simulation and experimental results are presented to validate the performance of the controller and its application to microgrid SST.

Abstract: Despite several studies, international treaties and individual organization's commitment to going green in the tourist hotel industry, there has been limited discussion of the business case for implementing environmental practices. Several hotels have determined that there are numerous benefits to greening their hotel operations; however, there is still a gap between attitude and action in this industry. Cost savings; competitive advantage; employee loyalty; customer retention; regulatory compliance; risk management and social responsibility have been identified as the benefits to environmental commitment however with very limited discussion and proof in relation to the hotel industry. This paper seeks to identify the business case for environmental commitment with a focus on the Canadian hotel industry. TL;DR: In this paper, the cyclic deformation behavior and low cycle fatigue (LCF) of a large solid extruded section of AZ31 magnesium alloy was investigated. And the authors observed that the alloy was cyclically stable at lower strain amplitude and exhibited cyclic hardening characteristics at higher strain amplitude, with a cyclic hardness exponent of about 2.6 times higher than the monotonic strain hardening exponent.
