Abstract: The building sector accounts for approximately 40% of total global energy usage. Energy consumption for space heating and cooling makes up 60% of the total consumed energy in buildings. This paper presents a comprehensive technical review of passive wall systems in building envelopes while discussing their respective capabilities in optimizing energy efficiency. Different types of energy efficient walls such as Trombe Walls, Autoclaved Aerated Concrete Walls, Double Skin Walls, and Green Walls are explored. Furthermore, novel concepts for optimizing energy efficiency in building envelopes are also introduced. Finally the utilization of passive wall systems to save energy while improving the building environmental impacts is discussed.

Abstract: A laser-induced periodic surface structure (LIPSS) has attracted research interest for its promising potential in micromachining for microelectronics and microelectromechanical systems. A femtosecond laser-induced periodical surface structure was investigated for polished crystalline silicon. The observed structure is similar to the classical ripples that are characterized by long, nearly parallel lines extending over the entire irradiated area on the metal and silicon surface after continuous or pulsed laser irradiation. The spacing of the ripples nearly equals the irradiation wavelength. The depth of these ripples increases nonlinearly with the fluence of irradiation. The orientation of these periodic structures is perpendicular to the vector of the electric field of the laser beam. It seemed that the pattern formed by a femtosecond laser complies well with conventional models. Unlike the patterns formed by a continuous or nanosecond pulsed laser, however, the spacing of the ripple formed by femtosecond pulses is not influenced by the incident angle of the laser beam. The formula used to predict the ripple spacing in the conventional model does not apply to the femtosecond laser induced ripple structure. A plausible explanation to this phenomenon is proposed. The effect of the pulse repetition rate was studied and it was found that a femtosecond laser oscillator generates the same periodic structure as the amplified laser system.

Abstract: The problem of estimating position and orientation (pose) of an object in real time constitutes an important issue for vision-based control of robots. Many vision-based pose-estimation schemes in robot control rely on an extended Kalman filter (EKF) that requires tuning of filter parameters. To obtain satisfactory results, EKF-based techniques rely on “known” noise statistics, initial object pose, and sufficiently high sampling rates for good approximation of measurement-function linearization. Deviations from such assumptions usually lead to degraded pose estimation during visual servoing. In this paper, a new algorithm, namely iterative adaptive EKF (IAEKF), is proposed by integrating mechanisms for noise adaptation and iterative-measurement linearization. The experimental results are provided to demonstrate the superiority of IAEKF in dealing with erroneous a priori statistics, poor pose initialization, variations in the sampling rate, and trajectory dynamics.

Abstract: Access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food not only affects the health of people who experience food insecurity, but also their ability to manage health conditions, such as diabetes. When people find it difficult to access sufficient food, tailoring their food selection to a diabetes regimen is even more difficult. Food insecurity in North America is consistently more prevalent among households with a person living with diabetes, and similarly, diabetes is also more prevalent in food-insecure households. Diabetes management can be stressful due to the many required responsibilities; when compounded with food insecurity, it becomes an even greater challenge. As a result, many food-insecure diabetics find themselves caught between competing priorities such as procuring food, prescribed medications and supplies for diabetes, and managing other living expenses, potentially worsening their condition and overall health. Healthcare providers should be aware and informed about the significant role that food security can play in the prevention and management of diabetes.
