Abstract: Purpose – The paper is in the domain of marketing strategies of multinational firms. Specifically, it aims to focus on target market selection of multinational firms.Design/methodology/approach – Using the cultural, administrative, geographic, and economic distance framework proposed by Ghemawat, the authors offer empirical support for the role of different distance factors on firms' foreign market acquisition behavior. In addition, they examine the moderating role of market potential of a target country on the relationship between distance factors and target market selection. The context of the paper is multinational firms from developing countries. The sample consists of cross‐border acquisitions (CBAs) completed by firms from 18 emerging countries between 1990 and 2006. Abstract: Pattern recognition-based multifunction prosthesis control strategies have largely been demonstrated with subsets of typical able-bodied hand movements. These movements are often unnatural to the amputee, necessitating significant user training and do not maximally exploit the potential of residual muscle activity. This paper presents a real-time electromyography (EMG) classifier of user-selected intentional movements rather than an imposed subset of standard movements. EMG signals were recorded from the forearm extensor and flexor muscles of seven able-bodied participants and one congenital amputee. Participants freely selected and labeled their own muscle contractions through a unique training protocol. Signals were parameterized by the natural logarithm of root mean square values, calculated within 0.2 s sliding and non overlapping windows. The feature space was segmented using fuzzy C-means clustering. With only 2 min of training data from each user, the classifier discriminated four different movements with an average accuracy of 92.7% plusmn 3.2%. This accuracy could be further increased with additional training data and improved user proficiency that comes with practice. The proposed method may facilitate the development of dynamic upper extremity prosthesis control strategies using arbitrary, user-preferred muscle contractions.

Abstract: We examine enforcement action in China’s emerging markets by focusing on (1) the agents that impose this action and (2) the role played by supervisory boards. Using newly available databases, we find that supervisory boards play an active role when Chinese listed companies face enforcement action. Listed firms with larger supervisory boards are more likely to have more severe sanctions imposed upon them by the China Security Regulatory Commission, and listed companies that face more severe enforcement actions have more supervisory board meetings. Our findings are of interest, as supervisory boards in China are generally perceived to be dysfunctional. This study contributes to the existing literature in three ways. First, we shed light on the effects of supervisory boards whose role in a fraud setting has not yet been examined. Second, the study has important policy implications for governance reform. Finally, our analyses provide the most up-to-date picture of fraud and governance issues in China’s ever-growing markets.
