TL;DR: Adaptive feedback control of tool vibrations during metal cutting in a lathe has been investigated in this paper, where the vibrations were controlled in the primary cutting direction and the control is based on the filtered-x LMS-algorithm.
Abstract: Adaptive feedback control of tool vibrations during metal cutting in a lathe has been investigated. The vibrations were controlled in the primary cutting direction and the control is based on the filtered-x LMS-algorithm. It was found that the adaptive feedback control can achieve a reduction of the tool vibrations with up to 35 dB at 1.7 kHz and simultaneously with approximately 30 dB at 3.1 kHz. A significant improvement of the workpiece surface was experienced together with a substantial reduction of the acoustic noise level with adaptive feedback control. Tool life is also expected to be extended and the material removal rate can probably be increased.

TL;DR: A new mechanical neck was developed for a new dummy possessing a complete articulated spine, for low speed rear-end collisions, that was validated against volunteer tests and was in agreement with the volunteer data.
Abstract: A new mechanical neck was developed for a new dummy possessing a complete articulated spine, for low speed rear-end collisions. The new neck consists of seven cervical elements connected by hinge joints. The neck stiffness properties were created by rubber blocks between each pair of vertebrae in combination with simulated muscle elements between the head and T1. The neck was validated against volunteer tests (Δv of 7 km/h) results. Both displacement and acceleration of the head relative to the upper torso for both duration and peak values, were in agreement with the volunteer data.

TL;DR: In this paper, a filling end of a fuel pipe connected to a fuel tank is attached to the chassis of the vehicle and a tubular seal is made of rubber and a pipe protector is welded to the body.
Abstract: A filling end 4 of a fuel pipe 3 connected to a fuel tank 2 is attached to the chassis of the vehicle. The filling end is fixed to a body element (9) inside the body work, the element carrying a pipe protector (13) which runs round the fill end and terminates at set distance from the body side (5). In the direction of the body, the protector (13) length protects the pipe fill end (4) and the fitted tank cover (17) to guard against collisions. A tubular seal (15) round the fill end (4) is fixed to the body element inside the protector (13) and adjoins the body side (5) round the tank opening (6). The seal (15) adjoins the body side via a body-fitted holder and has its own fuel drainage opening (22). The seal should be made of rubber and the protector (13) of metal, and thus welded to the body. The protector is in bowl shape opening towards the body. The holder (16) holds the pivotal tank cap (7) closing off the tank entry (6). The body element (9) is arranged in a wheelhouse (11) and encloses the tank fill pipe (3) within this (11).

TL;DR: In this article, the reinforcement element joins the roof of the bodywork at the top and is connected to the edge of the roof to provide greater rigidity of bodywork round the door apertures.
Abstract: The vehicle has a door column (4), i.e. the B column, in which an external shaped element with a reinforcing element (8) in it fit. The reinforcement element joins the roof of the bodywork at the top. The top end of the reinforcement element is T-shaped, with two arms (21,22) extending in opposite directions. Both arms have an end cut at an angle so that they are longer at the top than at the bottom. These arms are connected to the edge of the roof to provide greater rigidity of the bodywork round the door apertures.

TL;DR: In this paper, an arrangement and a method in a mechanical control system of an aircraft is described, where sensors are designed to detect the torque exerted on a control element by a force applied thereto, the trim angle of the control element and the angular velocity with which the action occurs.
Abstract: The present invention relates to an arrangement and a method in a mechanical control system of an aircraft. From the cockpit of the aircraft control surfaces (1) of the aircraft can be acted upon via the control system by means of at least one control element (3), for example a wheel, a control column or a pair of pedals operatively connected to the control system. A servomotor (5) together with sensors is also connected to the control system. The sensors are designed, when acted upon by the control element (3), to detect the torque exerted on the control element (3) by a force applied thereto, the trim angle of the control element and the angular velocity with which the action occurs. The arrangement comprises a control device (9) which, on the basis of the conditions detected by the sensors, is designed to control the servomotor (5) so that a ratio between the force applied to the control element (3) and the trim angle of the control element assumes a desired, essentially constant value.

TL;DR: In this paper, the rear bumper is secured by a U-shaped rail forming part of the bumper and a bumper fastening is fitted between the body and coupling with a bumper fitting for fixing to the vehicle rear bumper.
Abstract: The trailer coupling (3) is also secured to the rear bumper (5), notably in the centre between the two body fastenings (6,7). The fastenings are reinforced (8) between body and bumper to transfer forces to the body by element (14) fixed higher to the rear than the rear bumper (5). For load transfer the reinforcing element (14) is connected via a fastening bolt to a support (9) fixed to the body rear and joined (9) to a body side member terminating (7) as the bumper securement. The trailer coupling (3) itself is fixed to the body on a reinforcing element (14) acting as jack support and the bumper fastening is fitted to an U-shaped rail forming part of the bumper. The coupling also has a fastening for the underside of the body plus a towing arm extending from the fastening and fitted at the end with the trailer coupling connector. A bumper fastening is fitted between body and coupling with a bumper fastening for fixing to the vehicle rear bumper.

TL;DR: In this article, a fiber-optic coupled telescope of low complexity was constructed and tested for field measurements with a 532-nm Nd:YAG laser beam and the results were encouraging.
Abstract: A fiber-optic coupled telescope of low complexity was constructed and tested. The major loss mechanisms of the optical system have been characterized. Light collected by the receiver mirror is focused onto an optical fiber, and the output of the fiber is filtered by an interference filter and then focused onto an APD detector. This system was used in lidar field measurements with a 532-nm Nd:YAG laser beam. The results were encouraging. A numerical model used for calculation of the expected return signal agreed with the lidar return signal obtained. The assembled system was easy to align and operate and weighed about 8 kg for a 30 cm (12") mirror system. This weight is low enough to allow mounting of the fiber-optic telescope receiver system in a UAV. Furthermore, the good agreement between the numerical lidar model and the performance of the actual receiver system, suggests that this model may be used for estimation of the performance of this and other lidar systems in the future. Such telescopes are relatively easy to construct and align. The fiber optic cable allows easy placement of the optical detector in any position. These telescope systems should find widespread use in aircraft and space home DIAL water vapor receiver systems.

TL;DR: Fusion of different types of filters where the weaknesses of each design can be avoided and the strengths preserved leads to suppression of false alarms, and enhancement of the true correlation peaks.
Abstract: Over the years many correlation filter designs for automatic target recognition have been proposed. Some designs offer high tolerance to different types of noise and clutter with the disadvantage of not so sharp correlation peaks. Other designs give sharp correlation peaks but low tolerance to disturbances. A fusion of different types of filters where the weaknesses of each design can be avoided and the strengths preserved has earlier been proposed. We have used an optical correlator with binary SLM:s. Because of this, the complex gray-scale correlation filters are binarized. The input image is edge enhanced and binarized before entering the system. By using different binarizations, the filters produce different false alarm-peaks, but equivalent correlation peaks in the correlation plane. Optical correlation is performed with the filters and the results are fused giving the resulting correlation image. Fusion of the results leads to suppression of false alarms, and enhancement of the true correlation peaks. Tests have been performed on both high and low contrast cluttered images with good results.© (1998) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. TL;DR: In this article, the vehicle bodywork has a reinforcement element (7) fitted in the upper rear corner of a rear door aperture (3), which extends round the corner of the door aperture and has an arm directed forwards.
Abstract: The vehicle bodywork has a reinforcement element (7) fitted in the upper rear corner of a rear door aperture (3). This element extends round the corner of the door aperture and has an arm directed forwards. It is longer at the top than at the bottom. The forward-directed arm of the reinforcement element is carried in a carrier located above the door aperture. At the back, it is connected to elements in the bodywork fitted behind the door aperture. It is connected at its edges to other elements in the bodywork.

TL;DR: In this paper, a mathematical programming approach has been adopted where function values and sensitivity information is required from each discipline involved, and a number of extensions have been implemented in recent years.
Abstract: Applications of structural optimization are often multidisciplinary in nature and require nontraditional problem formulations. In the optimization system that has been developed, flexibility in terms of system design and problem formulation have been important aspects. A mathematical programming approach has been adopted where function values and sensitivity information is required from each discipline involved. To be able to deal with the demands of ongoing projects, a number of extensions have been implemented in recent years. The system is today used within the Saab and ABB companies. Four recent applications are presented to illustrate how the extended capabilities have been used.

TL;DR: This report is based on trails where number of trained test persons were given the task of deciding at what level of noise and spatial degradation they could identify fighter aircraft in computer generated images.
Abstract: This report is based on trails where number of trained test persons were given the task of deciding at what level of noise and spatial degradation they could identify fighter aircraft in computer generated images. The test persons gave a confidence level to those answers. This enabled finding the probability of correct identification as a function of noise and blurring. The report shows the results of some 6000 tests with 23 fighter aircraft seen in three different aspects: top, side and front. Chapter 1 of this document is introduction. Chapter 2 gives the theoretical background and the algebraic definitions of the quantities used. Chapter 3 describes the software and the test process used in the tests. Chapter 4 gives the results.

TL;DR: A bottom part of the guide (2) slot has a guide edge (8) which, in the direction away from the user, forms a second angle (b) with the guide edge.
Abstract: A bottom part (7) of the guide (2) slot (5) has a guide edge (8) which, in the direction away from the user, forms a second angle (b) with a guide edge (7) and also between the second guide edge and belt reel (3). This edge is used to guide the belt (1) in the bottom position in conjunction with the second edge of the slot. The edge guides the belt as it coils round its reel and the angle (b) is be smaller than the angle (a) formed between first (6',6") and second guide edges. The third and first (6',6") edges form a third angle (c) and the third edge (8) continues the first edge. Third edge (8) can adjust from its inactive setting into its action setting.
