TL;DR: In this paper, a media access control (MAC) controller is disclosed for a network providing communication for network stations (110,120,130) located at a plurality of customer premises and sharing a communication medium.
Abstract: A media access control (MAC) controller is disclosed for a network providing communication for network stations (110,120,130) located at a plurality of customer premises and sharing a communication medium, each of the premises having a plurality of network stations. The MAC controller includes a virtual local area network (vLAN) controller, providing access to the communication medium for and communication among the stations located at a single customer's premises, to define a vLAN (fig.1) between them. A group local area network (gLAN) controller provides access to the communication medium for and communication among interfering vLANs, two vLANs being considered to be interfering when one can sense communications over the medium from a station in the other. A MAC controller is provided in at least one station in a vLAN. The MAC controller is preferably connected to use as the communication medium the portion of a power line at the output of the last step down transformer (fig.1) and utilizes a token passing protocol (204) to control access to the medium.

TL;DR: The estimation framework presented is crafted to fit with the MASCOT environment, but the underlying techniques can also be applied to other high-level design exploration frameworks.
Abstract: The choice of algorithms has a large impact on the performance of embedded real-time systems. Therefore, performance estimation of embedded software is vital in an early design phase. Consequently, high-level estimation techniques have been devised, but the accuracy of the estimations vary a lot depending on the algorithm and its context. We address this problem by proposing an estimation technique that both estimates the performance and computes the expected accuracy. The accuracy is used to provide a confidence interval to the estimated performance. The estimation framework presented in this paper has been crafted to fit with the MASCOT environment, but the underlying techniques can also be applied to other high-level design exploration frameworks.

TL;DR: The results indicate that the irregular skull base offers natural protection of nerves and vessels passing through fissures and foramina in the cranial floor but also that it affects kinematics in different regions throughout the cerebrum.
Abstract: A 2D physical model of the human head was used to investigate how the irregular skull base structure affects brain kinematics during sagittal plane head dynamics. The model consisted of a rigid skull vessel with interchangeable skull base structures. One version of the model used a skull base mimicking the irregular geometry of the human. A second version used a skull base structure approximating the anterior and middle fossae as a flat surface. Silicone gel simulated the brain and was separated from the vessel by a paraffin layer which provided a slip condition at the interface between the gel and vessel. The model was exposed to 7600 rad/s2 peak rotational acceleration with 6 ms pulse duration and 5° forced rotation. After 90° free rotation, the model was decelerated during 30 ms. Five repeated tests were conducted with each version. Rigid body displacement, shear strain and principal strains were determined from high-speed video recorded trajectories of grid markers located at different positions in th...

TL;DR: In this article, a profiled element is defined as a tubular blank which is formed into the desired shape by hydroforming, and at least one slot essentially in the longitudinal direction of the blank is made in wall portions (4, 6) on the blank, and a reinforcing element is fixed in each slot.
Abstract: A profiled element (1) includes a tubular blank (2) which is formed into the desired shape by hydroforming. In conjunction with hydroforming, at least one slot essentially in the longitudinal direction of the blank is made in wall portions (4, 6) on the blank, and a reinforcing element (3) is fixed in each slot. In a suitable embodiment, each reinforcing element is fixed in two opposite slots and extends through a cavity in the blank. The invention relates to on the one hand a profiled element and on the other hand a method of producing the same.

TL;DR: In this article, a model nonlinear equation for the propagation of turbulent premised flamelets of finite thickness is proposed, which takes into account both influence of external turbulence and intrinsic properties of a flame front caused by density variations across the front.
Abstract: Propagation of turbulent premised flamelets of finite thickness is considered using the model nonlinear equation proposed recently. The nonlinear equation takes into account both influence of external turbulence and intrinsic properties of a flame front caused by density variations across the front. The formula for the turbulent flame velocity is derived for the case of flamelets of small but finite thickness. The obtained results agree well with experimental data on flame propagation in a turbulent flow of moderate and high values of the Reynolds number. Known expressions for the flame speed found by Clavin-Williamsand by Yakhot for the case of zero thermal expansion of the fuel mixture are recovered.

TL;DR: In this paper, the steering wheel and steering column are moved closer to the driver in the event of a collision by means of a drive device comprising a working chamber intended to act upon the first section of the steering column, to which chamber a gas generator is connected.
Abstract: In a steering wheel arrangement for motor vehicles, in which a steering column ( 5 ) provided with a steering wheel ( 4 ) is pivotally supported in a holder ( 6 ) in the vehicle, the steering wheel ( 4 ) together with a first section ( 7 ) of the steering column can be moved closer to the driver of the vehicle in the event of a collision. This is achieved by means of a drive device comprising a working chamber ( 13 ) intended to act upon the first section ( 7 ) of the steering column, to which chamber a gas generator ( 21 ) is connected, which is designed to be activated in the event of a collision in order to deliver propellant gas to the working chamber ( 13 ), thereby moving the steering wheel and steering column. During the movement the steering wheel may also be lowered. The gas generator ( 21 ) may also deliver gas to an airbag ( 20 ) fitted in the steering wheel ( 4 ).

TL;DR: In this paper, a motor vehicle having driveable wheels (3-6) both front and rear, the wheels on which drive is required or possible are automatically selected in each driving situation whilst underway.
Abstract: In a motor vehicle having driveable wheels (3-6) both front and rear, the wheels on which drive is required or possible are automatically selected in each driving situation whilst underway. The necessary engine torque is automatically distributed between drien wheels with regard to the road adhesion prevailing on those wheels. For this purpose, the vehicle contains a control unit (18), which by way of various sensors (19, 20, 22-25) on the vehicle obtains information on the current driving situation, and which is designed to determine on which wheels drive is required or possible. The control unit then distributes the necessary engine torque between the drivent wheels in each driving situation.

TL;DR: In this article, a method and a device for purifying methane gas in a Raman cell is described. But the method is not suitable for the use of laser light and it cannot be used in the case of high power laser light.
Abstract: not available for EP0898801Abstract of corresponding document: US6111905PCT No. PCT/SE97/00791 Sec. 371 Date Nov. 30, 1998 Sec. 102(e) Date Nov. 30, 1998 PCT Filed May 14, 1997 PCT Pub. No. WO97/43808 PCT Pub. Date Nov. 20, 1997The present invention relates to a method and a device for purifying methane gas in a Raman cell (20). When pumped laser light having a high power passes through the Raman cell containing methane gas, a portion of the methane can be decomposed, and then highly reactive methyl radicals are formed. They can react with each other and as time passes form organic compounds, which are deposited on the inner side of the windows (22a, 22b) of the Raman cell. A trap (26) comprising calcium grains (27), which absorb the methyl radicals, is introduced in the Raman cell (20). The methane gas, which comprises a small content of methyl radicals, is made to come in contact with the calcium grains (27), whereby a reaction occurs between the methyl radicals and the calcium grains, so that calcium carbide and calcium hydride are formed. The methane gas is driven around in the Raman cell (20) and through the trap (26) by means of a compressor wheel (28) driven by a motor (29c).

TL;DR: In this article, a library of conformationally restricted polyamine analogues for use in imaging and for therapeutic use in treatment of tumors is presented. But the analogues do not have the ability to aggregate DNA seen in the parent polyamines.
Abstract: Novel compounds are chiral compounds which are conformationally restricted polyamine analogues for use in imaging and for therapeutic use in treatment of tumors. These analogues diminish the ability to aggregate DNA seen in the parent polyamines. The invention provides for synthesis of a library of analogues with fine structural modifications which retain restriction and conservation of the molecular weight of the parent polyamines.
