01 Sep 2021TL;DR: The approach presented is designed to be scalable and generic to models of industrially relevant complexity and selecting experiments for validation is done objectively with little required manual effort.
Abstract:
Modeling and Simulation (M&S) is seen as a means to mitigate the difficulties associated with increased system complexity, integration, and cross-couplings effects encountered during development of aircraft subsystems. As a consequence, knowledge of model validity is necessary for taking robust and justified design decisions. This paper presents a method for using coverage metrics to formulate an optimal model validation strategy. Three fundamentally different and industrially relevant use-cases are presented. The first use-case entails the successive identification of validation settings, and the second considers the simultaneous identification of n validation settings. The latter of these two use-cases is finally expanded to incorporate a secondary model-based objective to the optimization problem in a third use-case. The approach presented is designed to be scalable and generic to models of industrially relevant complexity. As a result, selecting experiments for validation is done objectively with little required manual effort.

TL;DR: In this article, the stationary case of such currents is treated both in the linear approximation and with exact methods, for cascades without guide vanes the Mach ratio of the afflux velocity to the velocity of sound turns out to be dependent on the rotational speed.
In the case of rapidly rotating bucket rings a subsonic afflux may lead to supersonic flows or currents reacting on the incident flow. The stationary case of such currents is here treated both in the linear approximation and with exact methods. For cascades without guide vanes the Mach ratio of the afflux velocity to the velocity of sound turns out to be dependent on the rotational speed. Cascades with guide vanes show different types of flow. For some of these the exact solution differs essentially from the linear approximation even at the smallest perturbation.

TL;DR: In this article, a novel dual-polarization fiber laser is proposed by incorporating a distributed feedback grating inscribed in a twin-hole fiber with internal electrodes, achieving a spectral separation of 42 pm.
Abstract: A novel dual-polarization fiber laser is proposed by incorporating a distributed feedback grating inscribed in a twin-hole fiber with internal electrodes. Dual-polarization lasing is achieved with a spectral separation of ~42 pm. By beating the optical waves at a photodiode, a microwave signal at ~5.244 GHz is achieved with a signal-to-noise ratio ~45 dB. An electrically tuned microwave signal with a tunable range of 150 MHz is demonstrated.

02 Oct 2008TL;DR: In this article, the development of a 210 GHz radar system intended to study security applications such as personnel scanning is reported, which is designed to operate with a transmit antenna floodlighting the target scene and a mechanically scanned antenna-integrated receiver module.
Abstract: The development of a 210 GHz radar system intended to study security applications such as personnel scanning is reported. The system is designed to operate with a transmit antenna floodlighting the target scene and a mechanically scanned antenna-integrated receiver module. For increased performance and potential future volume production the receiver front-end is based on highly integrated MMICs manufactured using the IAF 0.1 µm GaAs mHEMT process made available through a Swedish-German MoU. A single-chip MMIC solution is being developed containing feed antenna, LNA, mixer and an LO multiplier-chain. The transmitter part is based on a high-power HBV quintupler source-module.

01 Jun 2007TL;DR: In this article, the authors draw the attention of systems engineers to the area of anthropology, where the analysis of cultural differences delivers a number of interesting insights that may be of great use for improving communication among systems engineers.
Abstract: Systems Engineering often deals with complex systems being developed and / or supported by multi-national teams of engineers with different cultural backgrounds. In such environments, cultural differences among the involved individuals often lead to misinterpretations and misunderstanding, leading to suboptimal solutions or even errors in design and failures in systems. In this paper we intend to draw the attention of systems engineers to the area of anthropology, where the analysis of cultural differences delivers a number of interesting insights that may be of great use for improving communication among systems engineers. We provide indices for measuring cultural differences as well as recommendations how cultural analysis can be integrated in the Systems Engineering process.
